Friday 23rd of March 2007 11:12:10 PMMost common Italian words?:
I`ve decided to learn Italian on my own and i was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find a list of the most common words(500-1000 words).
I think learning some basic vocabulary would be a good start,so i would appreciate it if you could help me.
Thanks in advance.Anya

I was looking for a similar thing and I found the Lonely Planet Italian Phrasebook very helpful. I found mine in Hong Kong, but I think it is pretty ubiquitous, so I hope you can find it near you! The ISBN number is 1-86450-317-3.
The good thing about this book is it is small (can carry it anywhere), but has a dictionary, useful phrases and words. You might find learning words in the context of phrases quite helpful, and this book has both of those.

Thanks for the recommendation! I`ll see if the book is available in some of the bookstores in my country or try to find it on the internet.

You are welcome. If you aren't able to find it, another way to get words and phrases are to select them from the Phrasebook, too! Carla has been working very hard on them and as soon as the English sections get updated, we will be able to update the other languages. That should be soon after the end of March.
Best wishes in your studies!tilda

If you need the basic phrases, you should take a look at the websites where you can find materials for Italian as a second language (Italiano L2).
http://www.italianol2.info/ for exaple is a website of an Emigrant Association of Pordenone (Italy). Here you can find materials for children (ragazzi) and for adults (adulti). Probably emigrants have different needs, however I'm sure you can find here the most important phrases and words.
If you would like to visit another websites for italiano L2 contact me.

Thank you both for the links! :) The site italianol2.info is one of the things that i was looking for and i`m just downloading useful phrases and words.
I also like Wordreference which will be useful in combination with the Oxford-Paravia dictionary, while i`ll start using De Mauro as soon as i gain (much) more knowledge.I haven`t looked at all the links yet,and i am sure that i`ll find many more that are helpful.
All the Best,
