- Hi-ho.

Books and books and books and books and books and books have been written on the topic of racism in Japan, data which I have neither extensively studied nor could I possibly provide a balanced introduction to. You should know that racism does exist amongst Japanese, and that foreigners of any race are discriminated against (see "gaijin") in Japan... but to use such a broad generalization is as unfair as it is untrue. People are people. Some of us are racists and some of us aren't. It's a big, ugly, and messy topic-- try not to worry much about it. If you go to Japan, respect the customs and speak the language, I can almost guarantee you will be popular.

- Heh, oh my this question could be interpreted in several ways. Athough if this is about sexual affection (about that too most probably) studies from all over the world shows that people in general fancy their likes. If you do a study and look at cuples you'll most probably see they have got a lot in common, at lest if it is one that has lasted a while. Then again it's a strange question. Do you want to bee liked by all japanese. Personal connections are by far outnumbering the number of human induviduals on this planet. Exception of whatever may be regarded most common is by far the most common whatsoever not hard to find. Colour of skin has never been what seperate peoples, although been studied far too much. There is a huge gap between a black and a negroe and what on mother earths fertile soil is a coloured?

Racism in Japan - I'm not sure how old this post is but I think I can answer your question. I'll try to make it short, but it is a complicated topic if you want to get into detail. But I am just going to tell the facts and I am far from saying all Japanese feel this way.

Japanese and Japanese Americans are very different and the same. But Racism in Japan is not at all the same as it is in America, they just simply think pure blooded (Pure racially, meaning All Japanese, All German descents.) are superior. They do though, look down on Americans, and to them your American whether your black, white, English or any decent. Much like stereotypically some one sees an Asian and see an Asian when really there are Chinese, Japanese, Okanawan Japanese, North Koreans, South Koreans ect ect. So unlike U.S where people pride the mix heritages, (For the most part) Japanese believe A pure race is genetically more able… So no, they don’t dislike blacks, but if your planning on going to Japan I think you should be a little watchful.

I’m not sure where you live, but where I live there are black and Japanese marriages. And personally I’m half black and half white and when it comes to Japanese girls they don’t have a problem with what I am. They are still people and have separate ideas. Just becuase one Japanese person will like you for who you are doesn't mean all will or just becuase one doesn't like you for what you are won't mean all won't.

Tried to keep it as short as possible, hope It helped mate.

- I too have also found it quite interesting-in the US, for example, I haven't seen or heard of anyone in this age who was turned down for rent the moment they met the landlord simply because they weren't *insert race here*, but apparently it's something to expect for a gaijin.

Very odd.

- Do they also consider germans as superior to others, or was that an example of a simlar concept in another culture?
LanguageStudentJPWednesday 25th of January 2006 05:54:06 AM
- I just used Germans as an example because I read recently about the alliance in War world II and that was a topic, the similarities between the two cultures in that time and the things they did that where similar. I'm not sure if in Germany still considers being pure racially is better but at that time they did.

But no, as far as I know Japan doesn't favor Germany, but they believe in being pure racially.
