- Doubt you can learn the full language without buying a book ,but if you want to try just online I give you some links but first you need an overview.

1)Japanese is basically a language where they speak much more correctly (I dont know how to explain that but you'll see what I mean, When you study more)

2) It's writing is composed of Hiragana and Katakana which is equal to like the Alphabet of the U.S. Except that its a syllabic alphabet.

3)Hiragana and Katakana are used for separate reasons such as Hiragana is used to write only Japanese words. And Katakana is used to write FOREIGN words , or to give emphasis to some words, or sound effects.

4)There is actually one more writing system called Kanji its ideoagraphic pictures that have meanings. So its like the hieroglyphs of Egypt. These Kanji are numerous and the standard practice is to learn the main 2,000 (yeah theres more than 2,000.

5)The way Japanese grammar is organized is different from English. English uses (S)ubject (V)erb (O)bject structure usually while Japanese uses SOV. So its like saying in English:
Jack bought me a gift
Japanese
Jack a gift to me he bought.

Alright here you go to get you started.

http://lrnj.com/ Download the program it teaches you Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries in a quick amount of time. It also will teach 200 Kanji characters.

http://web.uvic.ca/kanji-gold/ Kanji Gold is a program that organizes the Kanji systematically according to how Japanese kids learn it, and it has most of what you'll want.

http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html If you get a J-PenPal you might not be able to install the IME for win2000 systems, so this is a Word Processor that basically allows you to type in Japanese, it also has a nice Kanji feature lookup ability. (I mean I used to just download the MS Mincho Font and use character map to try and find the symbols of Kanji I needed very inefficient)

http://www.thejapanesepage2.com/kanji/junban.htm Shows basic Kanji Stroke order. I don't use it much but some say it may help in memmorizing Kanji. (I just try to memmorize em first.)

~~~~ALSO~`
http://www.thejapanesepage2.com/kanji/kanjimenu.htm That site has a cool PDF of Kanji and there meaning you can download it and print em for studying on the go. (Level 4 is equal to Level 1)
http://maktos.jimmyseal.net/jip.html Kinda gives basic Japanese and casual Japanese. It's pretty useful. Also tells you alot of common words which is always nice to know.
http://www.pikkle.com/jgram/ Japanese Gramamar site.
http://www.sf.airnet.ne.jp/~ts/japanese/index.html Japanese Grammar site.
http://www.Freelang.net You can download a vague little dictionary in Romaji. Its not to good but it helps.
Windows Media Player Radio can play Japanese stations (thoguh sometimes it doesn't work) http://www.radiotower.com/windows-media-player.html
To search for stations. or search directly under the Radio Tuner tab.
http://www.animelyrics.com If you listen to Japanese music, why not learn the lyrics
http://www.mindspring.com/~kimall/Japanese/ Non-Formal informaton about Japan Life. Also grammar.
http://www.outpostnine.com Definitely Non-Formal Information about Japan. Very funny
http://www.About.com search about japan tells formal information
http://www.phrasebase.com/forum/read.php?TID=8036 Common Nouns. Set your page encoding to UTF-8 under View menu. (Haven't really took a look at it though)
Yeah goodluck.
//EDIT: Sorry about the cluttered look. Try to make the text bolder.Added Windows Media Player info
Well, in the sense that --for the most part-- Japanese grammar contains far fewer exceptions than English, I agree with you. However, once you get past the textbook jibber most introductory Japanese texts teach, you'll find a wide world of colloquialisms and slang awaiting you... and they do their darndest to make your head turn inside out.
Welcome aboard and gambatte, Taylor! You've got your work cut out for you...
