learning khmer - Try to find a church in your area that ministers to Cambodians. You will have great opportunities to learn. Look up a company that does translations and ask if there is a Cambodian translator available. They can direct you to a group (church/ temple) that you can socialize with.

... - I'm learning khmer from a Cambodian monk and I've found that if you want to learn it, you have to surround yourself with those who speak the language. It takes months to learn Khmer to the point where some phrases and words are second nature.

I REALLY suggest find a Cambodian 'temple' (church) and finding out when it has classes because most of them do.

learning Khmer - I just registered on this site because I thought I could learn Khmer... I have Cambodian \"family\" (families who lived with me in the 1980\'s)but I didn\'t learn their language because I was intent on teaching them English. Now I want to learn theirs but they no longer live near enough to give me lessons. I visited Cambodia in Jan 06 and am planning to go back in 2008. Are they planning to add Khmer to this site for lessons?

Teaching/Learning Khmer - I\'d love to help anyone learning. Practice will also keep me learning. Although it might be a little difficult: I do not know how to write or read Khmer. I learned the language strictly on conversation basis through a former boyfriend and his family.

Books and CDs - I just bought a CD to learn Khmer...it\'s called Colloquial Combodian and it\'s by David Smyth. There is also an accompaning book. I know nothing can beat having a personal teacher but it\'s the next best thing. If anyone can build a very good common phrase list and have the pronounciations in english that would be very helpful. If anyone knows of one please let me know.

Thanks

HELP? - I need help too!! Could anyone help me translate some short sentences? I want to write a letter to a Cambodian boy I met on a school trip.

Could anyone translate this:

Dear _______,
How are you? I miss you and everyone else! That week was very fun. I\'m very happy because I might come to visit Cambodia again in July. Will you be there? I really want to see you again!
Love/Sincerely (whatever you end letters with),
Katie

ANY HELP WOULD BE GReATLY APPRECIATED!!
Also, if I send the letter by writing out the words instead of using hte characters, will most Cambodians be able to understand this?

Me Too!!! - I\'m going to Cambodia sooner or later and would like to learn some basics. I\'m concerned that I need audio help since the accent is sooo different from my western-american twang. :) If this post gets much bigger, you\'d think they\'d add Khmer to the language options... hopefully!

- Although there are 20 million people that speak this language, it may be hard to find a teacher because there are only about 200,000 Khmer-speaking people outside of Cambodia
