Just/Only - How do you express the idea of \"just\" or \"only\" having a specific amount of something in Korean? Can you use 밖?

삼천 원 밖에 없어요.
I only have three thousand won.

You are right - Being a korean,I think you are quite right. We will say 삼천원 밖에 없어요 same as you wrote, when u say \"I only have 3,000won\" although i can\'t say simply how to express Just and Only in korean since we have still various expressions in korean for the words of Just and Only depends on the different cases.

as examples,

i am just a single = 나는 그저(or 그냥) 독신이에요(na-neun geujeo(or geunyang) dogsin-ieyo)

he just arrived now = 그는 지금 막 도착했습니다(geu-neun jigeum mak dochag-hasseumnida)

i love only YOU = 나는 당신만을 사랑합니다(na-neun dangshin-maneul sarang-hamnida)

there is only one ticket remained tonight = 오늘 밤 표가 꼭 한 장 밖에 남지 않았어요(oneul bam pyo-ga ggok han jang bagge namjji anasseoyo)

You are a only son = 너는 독자야(neo-neun dogja-ya)

i need only that amount of money = 나는 그 만큼의 돈만 있으면 됩니다(na-neun geu mankeum-eui don-man iseeumyeon doemnida)

there would be other examples more to show YOU all. i may have another time of opportunity to describe those here and there.
today hope this post helps you more

thanks for your sincere question and interest about korean language

cheers

(any correction from korean native speaker would be appreciated if there is anything wrongly described here)

- Thanks for the explanation, edwoodseo. It\'s good that I\'m on the right track.

The examples you gave were also useful, especially since I learn best by example. :)

am glad you like my post - just one thing i want to learn is how i could enlarge my korean characters like u did. i tried but no way to do it.

look forward to ur kind advice

- You can enlarge your text by putting size \"tags\" around the text. For example:

[ size=3 ]안녕하세요?[ /size ]

But you\'ll need to remove the spaces inside the [ ] brackets. I only added them so they would display...

I hope that makes sense!

another example for Just/only - I accidentally got an idea as example for you mteric.

when you would tell someone...\'the only thing you have to do is just (..something...).

this is in korean
너는(당신은} 그것(something)만 하면 돼(돼요}

here 돼 or 돼요(verbally used) is a shortened form of 되어 or 되어요(literally used).

hope this helps you as well
mtericThursday 18th of January 2007 09:17:40 AM
- Thanks, edwoodseo! So, would this be correct?

너는 컴퓨터를 사기만 하면 돼요.
The only thing you have to do is buy a computer.
edwoodseoThursday 18th of January 2007 01:32:04 PM
that\'s one of the perfect korean sentence -
You are only my lover = Neo(this is not honorific)man-ee(or i) nae(my) sarang(lover)-iya
= 너만이 나의 사랑이야

*i am not so sure if my english grammar is correct on this sentence, correct me pla mteric if any.

another is:

I need nothing only if You could be with me.
Neo-man(you only) nagae(to me) isseo jundamyeon(if being with) naneun amu geot-do piryo-eobsseo(this is still not polite without ---yo in the end of the sentence, usually to the youngers than the speaker)

너만 내게 있어 준다면 난 아무 것도 필요없어

i think this type of topic raising lot of discussions is very much fun and is also great opportunity for the learners to practice various case study of the korean words as well s grammar involed in those words.

i will do my best to show as many examples as possible

thanks again Mteric
cheers
edwood
