| i know some korean, but in konglish. well... it's just a basic hangeul. - this is what i learn from other forum. > "there are" and "there is" is "issoyo". > "chogi issoyo" means "it exist over there", or "its over there" *Issoyo on its own can mean "I have/he has" "Opsoyo" means "I dont have" or "I havent got" > "ajossi" literally meaning uncle (However if it were to be used in a formal way, it is only for the referral of a man). "ajumma" meaning aunt (females) > the word for "and" is "hago" * example: "Nasir-hago shinae-e kayo" meaning 'I am going to town with nasir'. > "Ottaeyo" is "how?" > "Kuraeyo" literally means "it is like that" > The polite honorific "seyo" can be used to make requests more polite, "seyo" is used when the verb stem ends in in a vowel, and "useyo" is used when the verb stem ends in a consonant. below is a basic for Greetings and Conversation > ye = yes > an-ni-o = no > an nyong ha sye yo? = Hello, How are you? *also be used in reply. > an nyong hi - ka sye yo = Good Bye > k wen chah nah yo = Its ok, Its fine > ottok'ke ch nae sye yo? = How are you? > chal chi nae yo = Fine *in reply to "ottok'ke ch nae sye yo?" > kam sa ham ni da = Thank you *used in a formal way > ko map sum ni da = Thank you *used in a less formal way > choe song ham ni da = Sorry > mian ham ni da = Sorry *used with less emphasis well... :) happy learning... | |

| Saying hi from Yongin... - I\'ve been teaching ESL in Korea for six years, and am starting my seventh year here (after a hiatus of three years back in Canada). This time I\'d like to take learning Korean seriously, as I hope to spend time in this country longterm and am sick of the many difficulties and frustrations that I encounter because my conversational level is so minimal. Reading: Low - currently practising individual hangul characters and syllables Speaking: Survivor - can go shopping, catch a bus/taxi, barter, travel, and survive from day to day without difficulty. Plenty of nouns, some verbs, a sprinkling of adjectives, and basic courtesy phrases (like \'where is the bathroom\' and \'I\'m an English teacher\'...) Listening: Beginner - can pick out words and syllables in the flow of conversation and catch the topic if not the gist. Comprehend most very basic questions and can answer in fragmentary speech. Pronunciation: Excellent - unfortunately my ear is so good that I\'ve picked up the \'coarser\' accent of the shijang adjumas and taxi-kisanim with whom I do most of my conversing, to the amusement of my Korean peers. As a full-time teacher and a mother, I don\'t have a lot of time to attend classes, so I need the self-discipline to study on my own, and some recommendations for good websites or products. Right now I\'m having fun with the great \'hangul practise\' individual character flashcards at http://www.aeriagloris.com/LearnKorean/ - super for increasing my reading level as you can change between hangul -> western or viceversa. Glad to have found this forum, and will definitely read all the currently posted recommendations and stickies! Judith | |
