| Explanation - What I tried to say is: --- My name is Harawer. I write from Universidad Católica de Chile (Catholic University of Chile). I study Computer Engineering. I learnt Latin by reading. In February I read Harry Potter translated into Latin. I want to talk in Latin to anybody that wants to. --- I'm not completely sure of what I wrote, but I didn't think it being so bad that nobody could understand. | |

| - Eheu! You learned Latin just by reading it? You did not take any courses or use any textbooks? That's incredible. Latin is extremely difficult for me because of all the inflection. I would like to know your advice, and also where you think I could find Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis (I'm in the US) later, -Jonathan | |

| - I don't quite agree... You may be able to read Harrius Potter but don't get tricked into thinking that all Latin texts are that simplistic. | |

Maybe by the end of Latin 2, I'll be able to read Harrius Potter. | |

| - Why speak Latin? I am thinking about studying Latin. The reason is because I was under the impression that many languages, especially European languages, are based on Latin. Therefore I feel that if I had a basic understanding of Latin other languages would be easier to learn. Does anyone find this to be true or untrue?? | |

| - well is basically is true... Spanish, French, Italian are all based on Latin... And those are very important languages to know, especially Spanish, since over 20 countries speak it natively. | |

| - I hate latin. It's the worst language i've ever learned eventhough i do like languages.Maybe it's for the teacher...Anyway,it's a langugae that you cannot listen. Is true that latin is the base of all latin-languages and if you already know a latin-language,it's easyier to learn, but translating phrase it's not fun. | |

| - And don't forget that latin have had an huge impact on the other European languages as well. (a survey of Swedish showed that 20 % of the 6000 most common words are derrived from Latin (or Greek through Latin) | |

| - Linguam latinam scribere volo. Sed numquam id facui! Difficilis est! Sed discere scribere linguam latinam volo. Perge dialogum! ;) (that's probably wrong but I've only always learnt to translate from Latin, never the other way around. Oh well, this could be fun!) | |

| Introduction - My latin is horrible and I have no interest in learning a Romance language, beyond GI speak. I find Latin improves my English vocabulary and grammar. I think more English words are direct cognates of Latin words than Spanish or French. When I find a new English word about 5 out of 10 times I can guess it from a Latin stem or prefix. Now if I can find a way to improve my spelling ;) I also very much enjoy the humility of the Ancients. The more you read the more you learn there really is nothing new under the sun. I may never be fluent in Latin but the path is fun to walk. A newbies 2 cents. By the way I'd love to play in any Latin language games. And I can help you get a drink or a face slap in Turkish. Dont have much to contribute but love to learn and I'm willing to chat in latin. kev... | |
