LESSON 2 - Since Alec seems to have deserted us, I will continue the lessons:

Okay, so when you have an -are verb, you get rid of the root (re) and your left with the verb ending in an a. Then, you add the tense marker for imperfect, \"-ba-\", and then the verb ending. So:

Vocabam - I was calling/I used to call
Vocabas - You were calling/You \" \"
Vocabat - He/She \" \"/ \" \"
Vocabamus
Vocabatis
Vocabant

YAY! Now you know Imperfect -are verbs. Now it\'s time for 2nd diclension!

Second diclension nouns are all neuter and masculine and can only have three possible nominative endings, -us (the most common), -r (the least common), -um (neuter ending. So, I will decline one of each:
Sing -r
N:Vir - Man
G: Viri - Of the man
D: Viro - To/For the man
Ac: Virum - Man (direct object)
Ab: Viro - *

Plu
N: Viri
G: Virorum
D: Viris
Ac: Viros
Ab: Viris

Sing -us
Rogus - Funeral Pyre
Rogi - Of the Funeral Pyre
Rogo - To/For Funeral Pyre
Rogum - Funeral Pyre (D.O)
Rogo - *

Plu
Rogi
Rogorum
Rogis
Rogos
Rogis

*Singular neuter nominative words in the second declension always end in -um, in all diclensions the plural nominative neuter always ends in -a. Also, the nominative and accusative are always the same in all diclensions when the word is neuter

Neuter Sing \"-um\"
Donum - Gift
Doni - Of the gift
Dono - To/For the gift
Donum - Gift (D.O)
Dono - *

Plu
Dona
Donorum
Donis
Dona
Donis

- Can someone either make this sticky, or allow me to make things sticky?
JoeSaturday 23rd of June 2007 06:33:42 AM
- Keep posting them, after there are several lessons I\'ll create and edit an index thread that lists all your lessons.

BTW - if you are creating lesson posts, be SURE to post some type of reply under them (any reply). PB uses an automated post removal script that deletes any post after so many months that has no replies. If it has a single reply, the program skips over it...

- Thanks, Joe! Suddenly I feel rejuvinated! Does this mean that there will be a Latin Language Lessons (alliteration) Forum?
JoeSaturday 23rd of June 2007 07:04:04 AM
- If enough lessons get built up over time, I can add one.
BCSSaturday 23rd of June 2007 07:08:09 AM
- Yay! Latin Forum Publicity! Also, would it be possible to put the Romansch forum in the \"more\" section, and the Latin Forum on the main page. b/c there are only 1-2 threads in the Romansch forum, so could you, please? Anya just put it there to show someone where it was.

- How is it that you\'re able to post without being on phrasebase?
JoeSaturday 23rd of June 2007 08:28:30 AM
- Just because you can\'t see me doesn\'t mean I\'m not here... ;)

I\'m actually at work - I usually go \"invisible\" at work, as I usually don\'t have time on the job to answer the PMs I get when people see me online.

I\'ll look into the Latin/Romansch switch. Last time I tried to move a forum in the main page like that, it wouldn\'t update for me.

I just wanted to say that Alec hasn\'t deserted us. He\'s just been busy with university lately. (if my memory serves me right). So, he\'s almost never online these days. ;)

- Spooky Joe...lol :D
Thanks, Danial, I just wish he could go on at least once a month...
leobloomMonday 25th of June 2007 02:30:52 PM
- well done =o)
Just remeber that vocabam can also be translated as \"I called\" as simply as it is :D
BCSMonday 25th of June 2007 06:16:44 PM
- true....but that is one of the least used translations, and I usually leave that translation for the perfect tense.
leobloomSaturday 30th of June 2007 05:59:49 AM
- ok :D that\'s a problem when referring to tense tranaslations from Latin into English and italian =o) Romance languages have a different way of dealing with tenses if compared to English and translations from Latin show that...
BCSSaturday 30th of June 2007 11:34:57 PM
- ah, alright, now that makes more sense
