| - I don\'t have time to teach you. Here is my best suggestion. Start by building some vocabulary. Do this by going to byki.com and following the program for learning the lists. Follow each list through the exercises until you have mastered them and don\'t skip a step. It\'s easier than it sounds. The lists aren\'t perfect because they mix classical and medieval Latin spellings, but they will help you greatly. Second, when you have mastered that much vocab, go to http://www.cherryh.com/www/latin1.htm Here you will learn how Latin really works. CJ has managed to make Latin accessible to everyone. Forget most of what you\'ve heard about Latin grammar. That method was designed in the Dark Ages for guys without lives, locked up in monastaries. It hasn\'t been improved much in a millenium. Read a section of the site and then use it. If you view Latin as a living language, to be spoken and read, you will learn it. If your English vocab is good, you already know two to three thousand Latin words, albeit somewhat disguised. Finding and reading the paperback book \"Latin and Greek in Scientific Terminology\" will not only greatly improve your Latin vocab, but vastly improve your English. Other useful aids are \"Latin for the Illiterati\" and \"Amo Amas Amat\". You serve yourself by avoiding textbooks. Now you have a clear study plan. It\'s really fairly simple and straightforward. Just stick with it and you will learn a lot of Latin. After you follow through, anyone somewhat competent in the language, even if not an accomplished teacher, can help you fill in most of the gaps. If you ignore the myth that Latin is foreign or especially difficult, you will do fine. Happy learning. | |
