KRUSEVO, Macedonia (Reuters) - Macedonian pop star Tose Proeski was buried on Wednesday with full state honors in front of thousands of mourners, a day after the 26-year-old was killed in a car crash in Croatia.

Proeski, one of the most popular artists in the Balkans, was buried in his hometown of Krusevo, his coffin draped in the Macedonian flag and lowered into the ground to a gun salute.

Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski were among several thousand mourners.

"He left too young, as a legend," Gruevski told the ceremony. "We are indebted to him, to continue his humane work," he said.

Proeski was killed when his jeep hit the back of a truck and crashed into the protective fence on the Zagreb to Belgrade highway 120 km (70 miles) east of Zagreb.

He was asleep in the passenger seat. Two other people in the car were injured.

Thousands of weeping fans poured into the main square of the Macedonian capital Skopje on Tuesday evening, lighting candles and leaving flowers, teddy bears and posters of the young star.

A classically-trained singer, Proeski started his pop career at 15, releasing his debut album at 18.

Thousands of Macedonians have attended the funeral of one of the country's biggest stars, singer Tose Proeski, who died in a car crash on Wednesday.

Proeski, 26, was buried with full state honours, including a gun salute, in his native town of Krusevo.

Police said the singer's car collided with a lorry on a road in Croatia.

Proeski represented Macedonia in the 2004 Eurovision contest and had a large following in nearby countries that were once part of Yugoslavia.

His music avoided the nationalistic themes favoured by some of his contemporaries in the region and this bolstered his popularity beyond his country's borders, the editor of the BBC's Macedonian service says.

A classically-trained musician, Proevski sang mostly about love.

While younger fans admired him for his looks and voice, an older generation praised his wholesome image and religious faith.

'Too young'

People from across Macedonia as well as several neighbouring countries travelled to Krusevo to attend Proeski's funeral.

Macedonia's top government officials and foreign dignitaries, including the US envoy to Skopje, were also present.

"He left too young, as a legend," Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski told the mourners, many of whom were weeping.

Proeski's coffin - draped in Macedonia's national flag - was then lowered into the ground to the gun salute.

Earlier, his body was flown to Krusevo by helicopter from Croatia.

Thursday was also declared a national day of mourning for the singer.

Proeski was killed after the car he was travelling in hit a lorry and crashed into a barrier on the Zagreb-Belgrade motorway.

Two other people were hurt in the crash near the eastern town of Nova Gradiska.

Readers' comments

Parliament in the Macedonian capital, Skopje, cancelled its session when the news reached it on Wednesday.

Thousands of shocked fans later gathered in the capital, lighting candles and placing flowers in makeshift shrines.

The tragic death of the singer is dominating the news in the tiny Balkan country, with TV and radio stations playing Proeski's songs back-to-back.

"Macedonia and the Balkans lost an angel," said the head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Stefan.

Megastar

Proeski started his career aged 15, releasing his first album at 18.

He had several number one hits in four former Yugoslav republics - Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia.

Among Proeski's hits were Cija Si (Whose Are You?) and Ako Me Poglednes Vo Oci (If You Look Me In The Eyes).

He sang both in Macedonian and in Serbian and was seen as a bridge between people in a region recently divided by ethnic conflict, correspondents say.

Proeski was also a Unicef goodwill ambassador promoting humanitarian projects in the Balkans.

Some 30,000 people attended what was his last concert in Skopje on 5 October.

Macedonia bids farewell to star boy Tose Proeski

Skopje, October 17 (MIA) - Tose Proeski - the idol, the icon, the ambassador of Macedonia, the nightingale with an angelic voice, the humanist was buried with full honors at the town cemetery in his native Krusevo on Wednesday afternoon.

The tears of those who came to bid farewell to Tose, and the helpless weeping of his family and closest friends did not soften the reality. Tose is back in his Krusevo - forever.

The honorary army guard handed over the flag from Tose's coffin to his father Nikola. Three salvos were shot in honor of Tose.

Pontiff of the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MPC) HH Stefan, said that Krusevo and Macedonia have not felt such sorrow since 1903.

"We have lost the best, most talented boy, whose voice promoted Macedonia. He thrilled us with his vocal and song, along with his love for God and mankind. He understood happiness, but did not forget pain. His last concert was his farewell to Macedonia. Continue to sing in heaven, and let angelic choirs accompany you", said HH Stefan.

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said, "Tose taught us the values of humanity, hard work and sincerity. He left much too young in the legends, leaving an invaluable legacy behind. He is a role model to be followed and respected. Tose has left his song to cheer us up when hard times knock on the door".

"He has a star within, a pure heart, soul and will, which showed that Macedonia can be equal to all others. He left as he lived - dreaming of a better world, believing in a better tomorrow and believing in people", underlined PM Gruevski.

"He was touched by God. I always waited for you and you always came. Hope has died in the biggest star that shall ever be borne in Macedonia. He was not an artist, he was a masterpiece", said his close friend Vesna Petrusevska on behalf of Macedonian artists.

"We cannot believe he is gone. We were overjoyed to each of his successes, but he remained the same, his popularity did not change a thing from his character filled with cheerfulness", said Ilco Angelovski on behalf of his friends.

President Branko Crvenkovski, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Parliament Speaker Ljubisa Georgievski bowed before the coffin. Government ministers, MPs, Archbishop Stefan, church dignitaries, diplomatic corps representatives, ARM delegation, political parties, local authorities paid their respects, as well as fellow musicians, composers etc.

Earlier, the coffin with the remains of Macedonian music star Tose Proeski was transferred from his home to church "Most Holy Birth Giver of God" in Krusevo, where a ceremony was held. Afterwards the coffin was brought to area Gumenje in front of the monument "Makedonium".

Macedonian Army helicopter, transporting the remains of pop star Tose Proeski from Croatia, arrived at the Skopje Airport late Tuesday. Afterwards, the coffin was transported in a vehicle and sent to his native Krusevo as his family wanted.

The Government declared Wednesday-October 17 a Day of Mourning, and posthumously proclaimed Tose Proeski Meritorious Citizen of the Republic of Macedonia.

Macedonian mega-star Tose Proeski was killed in a car crash early Tuesday in Croatia. The accident happened on Tuesday morning at 06,25h two kilometres near Nova Gradiska in western Slavonia, when his Volkswagen Tuareg collided with a truck.

Besides Proeski, who was sleeping at the front seat, his manager Ljiljana Petrovic (1958) and Gjorgji Gjorgjevski (1975) - driver, were also aboard the vehicle at the time of the crash. It is assumed that the accident happened due to insufficient distance between the vehicles while driving. The Volkswagen Tuareg crashed into the truck's trailer and halted on the grass. Liljana Petrovic suffered light injuries, while the driver sustained more severe ones.

Tose Proeski was born on January 25, 1981 in Krusevo. He had his first more significant public appearance at the teenage festival "Melfest" in 1996. Proeski rose to stardom in 1998 with the hit song Pušti Me (Let Me Go) at the festival "Makfest" in Stip 1997. A year later, he participated at the Skopje Festival (the national contest for "Euro song" entry), with the song "Ostani do Kraj" ("Stay Till the End").

He represented Macedonia at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul, finishing 14th with the song "Life."

In 2004 he was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and recorded the song "This World" which is now the UNICEF anthem.

The albums that brought some great hits are: Некаде во ноќта, (Somewhere In The Night); 2000: Синот Божји, ( The Son Of God); 2003: Ако Ме Погледнеш Во Очи, (If You Look Into My Eyes), Ako Me Pogledaš U Oči (Serbo-Croatian language version); 2004: Ден За Нас ( A Day For Us),Dan Za Nas (Serbo-Croatian language version); 2005: По Тебе, (After You) Pratim Te (Serbo-Croatian language version); 2006: Божилак, (Rainbow); 2007: Игри Без Граници (Games Without Borders), Igra Bez Granica (Serbo-Croatian language version).

The album, titled Po Tebe (After You), is one of the most successful Balkan albums ever. It has been topping music charts for months in Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Božilak (Rainbow) is a compilation of 14 selected traditional Macedonian songs. The artist is backed up by a symphonic orchestra on the album.

His most popular songs were "Eh, da sum Zlato" ("I Wish I Were Gold"), "Ruski Rulet" ("Russian Rullet"), as well as the above mentioned "Pusti Me" ("Let Me Go"), "Ostani do Kraj" ("Stay 'Till the End"), "Usni na Usni" ("Lips on Lips"), "Sonce vo Tvojte Rusi Kosi" ("The Sun in Your Golden Hair")...
