Alphabet-Azbuka Game: In this game I'll write a few words in cyrillic and wait for you to transcribe them in the latin alphabet(when there are enough people that write cyrillic others can give words in it too). For the cyrrilic azbuka check the thread i made about it.

Eg.
Скопје - Skopje
ручек(lunch) - ruchek
добредојде(welcome) - dobredojde
штит (shield)- shtit

Lets begin:

клупа (bench).........
град (town, city).......
држава (country, state).......
земја (earth, land, country)........
човек (human).......

thanks for participating byrdie.

Your transcriptions were correct, you only made a couple of small mistakes:

not kjlupa but klupa
and if you intended to use the symbols zj for the macedonian symbol Ж, than it's correct, though I prefer zh.

However, none of these are correct, in macedonian latin we use the symbol , but because macedonian latin is almost never used and it's not represented in the regional languages settings, it's better to use these representations:

dz = Ѕѕ
gj = Ѓѓ
kj = Ќќ
lj = Љљ
nj = Њњ
ts = Цц
ch = Чч
dzh =Џџ
sh = Шш
zh = Жж

All the others have their equivalents in the Macedonian alphabet.

Now, some new words:

Да (yes)...........
Не (no)............
Мислам (I think)...
Правам (I do)......
Работам (I work)...
Живеам (I live)....
Живот (life).......

ok, wasn't exactly sure what you were looking for. Have been learning Croatian and wanted to use letters with diacritics, but noticed you weren't in your examples.

Да (yes)...........da
Не (no)............ne
Мислам (I think)...mislam
Правам (I do)......pravam
Работам (I work)...rabotam
Живеам (I live)....zhiveam
Живот (life)....... zhivot

Yeah, we were tought the latin scrypt adapted for the Macedonian language in school (and it had diacritical signs), but that's the last time we ever saw it. It's never used, so I suggest to everyone to learn cyrillic. Until then, you can use these replacement signs.

By the way, all of your answers were correct. :)

I'll now post some other Macedonian words, but you can do that as well (whether in cyrillic for others to transcribe or in latin and I'll transcribe them to cyrillic).

бебе (baby)......................
дете (child).....................
девојка (girl/girlfriend)........
момче (boy/boyfriend)............
жена (woman/wife)................
маж (man/husband)................

дете (child).....................dete
девојка (girl/girlfriend)........devojka
момче (boy/boyfriend)............momche
жена (woman/wife)................zhena
маж (man/husband)................mazh

Seeing as there seems to be no one else playing this game besides you and me, I'll write in latin for you to transcribe. Let me know if you want me to use diacritical signs for a better challenge.

dava (to give)....
lamba (lamp)....
abazhur (lampshade)....

chokolada (chocolate)....

lamba (lamp)....ламба
abazhur (lampshade)....абажур (never heard this one before)

correct, but I have to mention something. All the adjectives you gave were masculine, except sino which you gave in the neuter gender. In Macedonian, adjectives have masculine, feminine and neuter gender.

Apart from some exceptions, they usually end in /-a-o.

So,

portokalov - masculin
portokalova - feminine
portokalovo -neuter

It all depends on the gender of the noun.

ракија - (the local firewater) - ракија
жолта/ж`та/лозова (yellow/yellow/made of grapes) - olta/'ta/lozova
шливова (made of plums) - livova
анасонка (made of grapes, but added anaseed, so it tastes like uzo) - anasonka
мастика - (the most hardcore firewater, similar taste like uzo, but much stronger) - mastika

Are all of these Macedonian? Well, rakija and livovica sounds kind of familiar. ;)

Marjan
Monday 05th of February 2007 07:17:20 PM
Yes and no. Yes, because they are traditional Macedonian drinks made for centuries...and no because they are common for more than one nation.

For example, rakija is universal on the Balkans and in Turkey (mostly lozova). Slivovica is common for Macedonia, Serbia and probably Bulgaria and other countries.

Anasonka I have heard they even have in some parts of Turkey.

The three above are subtypes of rakija, though they are quite different. Lozova is made of grapes, Shlivova of plums and Anasonka of grapes with some special ingredients.

And the mastika is quite different. We share it with the Bulgarians. There were some studies that showed that the easiest way to become an alcoholic is from mastika. :)

And there are many many more kinds of hard alcohol (mostly likers). What can I say...we like to drink... :)

It's good that you already know the Cyrillic Azbuka. The Macedonian version is a bit different from the Russian, but they are basicly the same.

Yeah, it's hard for me to understand Czech and Slovak too, and I find Polish almost impossible.

Hi Tiger. You seem to mix up н(n) and к(k). Also, there is no "double l" construction in Macedonian. So, it's:

Hi Jani. It would seem so. This is probably allowed because the name Slovenka (meaning female Slav) is not really used often because they don't exist as one nation anymore and when one refers to them he usually takes the male form. But if a need for the female form arises it would be Slovenka.

Actually, the name of your country and nation brings some amount of confusion because as your country is called Slovenia naturally we would call the Slovenian people Sloveni in Macedonian. However, since we already use that name when referring to ourselves, we have to call you Slovenci.

Anyway,

салфетка (napkin) - salfetka
