Peribahasa Bahasa Melayu Harian: Okay, aku telah mencuri thread idea ini yang berada di forum 'All Languages' daripada Anya :p namun, thread ini ialah untuk peribahasa bahasa Melayu ATAU kata-kata yang terkenal dalam bahasa Melayu.

Okay, I stole this idea of a thread from the forum All Languages from Anya. However, this thread is for Malay proverbs or famous sayings in Malay.

So this is the first one. :)



Bunga yang harum itu ada juga durinya
A flower that smells as sweet, has its thorns.

Makna: Orang yang cantik atau kaya atau mulia itu ada juga cacat-celanya.
Meaning: A person who's beautiful/rich/highly regarded has his/her ugly side/faults.

"Seperti tikus yang membaiki labu"
~ Like a mouse fixing (a) pumpkin

Makna: Sesuatu usaha yang dibuat oleh orang yang kurang tahu untuk memperbaiki sesuatu yang rosak. Kerosakan yang dibaiki itu bukannya bertambah baik tetapi bertambah teruk lagi.
Meaning: When one attemps to fix something spoiled, although he/she does not have sufficient knowledge to do, he/she ends up making that something worse instead of improving it.

Makna: Orang yang terlepas dari satu bahaya, kemudian dapat bahaya lain pula.
Meaning: Someone who has just left one danger/mishap/trouble/problem and enters a bigger danger/mishap/trouble/problem.

Makna: Adat kebiasaan boleh diubah asalkan ada persetujuan orang banyak.
Meaning: A usual custom can be changed if it is agreed by a lot of people.

Makna: Lebih baik merendahkan diri, supaya selamat dalam hidup. resmi = sifat.

'tatang' is to curve your hands as seen in the picture. Well, I know this is water, but, imagine it with oil and none of the oil is dripping off the hand.

"Ditatang seperti minyak yang penuh"
~ Carried in the palm of the hand like it's full of oil

Makna: Sangat dikasihi dan dipelihara dengan sepenuhnya.
Meaning: Well loved and raised with all it needs/wants.

~ Water, chopped, will not split.

Ahh... bad translation I know... that's the 'gist' I could try and give. But please do take a look at the meaning and you'll get a good sense of the idiom.

Makna: Perbalahan atau pergaduhan antara saudara-mara tidak akan berpanjangan kerana akhirnya mereka akan berbaik-baik semula.
Meaning: Bickering or fights between siblings will not last long as at the end they will be good to each other again.

Makna:(a) Perbalahan kerana sebab yang terlalu kecil

(b) Bickering because little food or little profits/benefits.

Hal orang yang tamak; diberi sedikit hendak banyak, diberi banyak hendak semua
- Like when, a greedy person is given a little (of whatever he/she is given), he/she demands for a lot more. Then when he/she is given more, he/she would ask for the whole thing.

"Bagai kaduk naik junjung"
I have no idea what is the equivalent of 'kaduk' plant in English, but it's roughly a plant that normally grows on the ground. So, the rough idea of this idiom is that a plant that usually grows on the ground, suddenly creeps up (a tree for example) and decides to grow on high places instead of the low ground

Orang yang hina apabila mendapat keistimewaan (mendapat pangkat) akan menjadi mengada-ngada
- Someone who's usually a low-profile/quiet type"innocent looking" gets something special (e.g. a promotion) and becomes completely arrogant.

(a) Someone who is completely stupid, if taught properly, he/she can become clever.

Meminta pengadilan kepada seseorang yang tamak, akhirnya kedua-dua pihak mengalami kerugian.
- Two people who are arguing over something then asks for a fair judgement to who should get/win whatever they are fighting over from a person who is greedy himself and in the end, both parties faces a loss.
