Phrasebase Song Contest 2008: [br]
Phrasebase Song Contest 2008

Listening to music is an important part of studying a language to most of us. Besides, (most of the time) they represent the culture of the countries where that language is used. Thanks to these songs, we learn more about the country where our target languages are spoken and we enjoy the linguistic diversity thanks to different kind of songs in various languages.

Last year Osman thought we should have a contest on Phrasebase, and so he hosted one. (Thanks Osman!) It is like Eurovision but our contest should be universal and every country can participate. And so last year, phrasebase had its very first PHRASEBASE SONG CONTEST. :) The winner of 2007 was: Abel - Onderweg, "Abel - On your way" (the Netherlands). As the Netherlands won, it was chosen to host the next contest, which I'd be happy to do. I thought I start a bit early this year, to give everyone some time to find songs and later to vote. :p

Please read below and tell me your ideas. If you would love or not to participate in such contest, share your reasons with us. And help us shape the 'concept' of the contest. I believe it will be sweet again! Go on reading...

* Every country should choose a song (with videoclip, added on Youtube, dailymotion, metacafe etc.).

* Songs are chosen by Phrasebase members (who have more than 50 posts) and can be postend in their respective country forum. After getting everybody's songs, there can be a mini-poll to choose the song which will represent the country in their country forum.

* The songs may be in one of the languages spoken in that country. For example; Spain can join with a song in Catalan, Spanish, Galician, Euskara etc.

* In case their are many participating countries, we can hold Semi-Finals, e.g. early May. Half of the countries represented in Semi-Finals will be in Finals too according to their ranks.

* Votings may be like that: everybody will send their votes to host (Rainbow_Oasis is hosting PSC 2008). If two or more persons from the same country send their votes, then all points will be calculated and the one who gets the most points will have 12 points, the follower 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. For example; Two German persons send me their votes as it follows:
Belgium 12
Spain 10
England 8
Argentina 6
Uruguay 5
China 4
Australia 3
US 2
Morocco 1

the other one sends like this;
Egypt 12
Canada 10
Japan 8
Turkey 6
England 5
Spain 4
Belgium 3
Argentina 2
Morocco 1

then the votes will be calculated:

Belgium > 12 + 3 = 15
Spain > 10 + 4 = 14
England > 8 + 5 = 13

So, Belgium will get 12 points, Spain 10 points and England 8 points from Germany. It is necessary to do so. Because the voters from every country won't be same :)

* Those whose countries don't take place in the contest will also have chance to vote. They need to write their country of residence as 'Rest of the World'.

* Those who want to take place in the contest should tell it in their posts below.

* Anyone can represent their countries here. You don't need to be more than one person to decide whether you will join the contest or not.

Estimated Dates:
March 01 - April 01: Everyone can make nominees (if Joe is oke with this, I think it would be best if everyone post their nominees in their respective country forum). Let the host know that you would like your country to participate.

April 01 - April 21: Time to vote.

April 28: Special thread for the songs of each country that will be in the finals of Phrasebase Song Contest Spring 2008.

April 28 - May 20: Time to vote.

May 24: The results will be announced and a member from the winner country will host the third contest. (if not, volunteers may be chosen)

May 24 is also the day when Eurovision Finals will be held...

If we add those videos to Youtube by writing; 'Phrasebase Song Contest - Turkey (China, Greece, England etc.). There will also be good traffic from Youtube or the site where video has been added!

Depending on how many countries will participate we will see if we will hold a semi-final or not.

Let's make this the most widespread song contest in the world!!

Yay Rainbow!
I was kinda wondering when this was gonna be held

I'll be representing Egypt as I did last year, I hope this year's contest would be an even bigger hit than last year's! :)

Hmmm.... there's an interesting loophole in this, though I don't actually like music from my country that much, and I prefer to listen to music in other languages, while I'm learning them. So I suppose I'll join the Italian or German team, etc.

I wasn't here for the 2007 contest but was aware of it so I think I'll join this years. I would gladly do the United States this year, but I have some questions.

-Can I do the Romanian also? (If I'm right poor Romania was neglected last year and they have amazing songs. I can get together with Lina the Romanian moderator and we can pick a song for the contest.)

-Does the song have to be from 2008? (That one may be obvious or not I'm not sure. ;) )

That's it I can't wait to hear some of the songs.

P.S. @Djr You don't like ANY American songs?

Sunday 02nd of March 2008 07:54:29 PM

Spain too, please!
¡España también, por favor! :)

* The songs may be in one of the languages spoken in that country. For example; Spain can join with a song in Catalan, Spanish, Galician, Euskara etc.

Sorry, but I don't agree with that. Those aren't national languages, they are regional languages. Spanish is the one national language, the one that everybody speaks. Because many people from Catalonia or Galicia can't speak their regional languages. I'll just post songs in Spanish.

As long as it is not an English song by a Greek singer as last year :p

Hi Rainbow_Oasis,

I would like to nominate some New Zealand songs for the competition so I'll make a post in the New Zealand forum about this. Is it ok if I ask my friend to help me find some good New Zealand songs for the competition? She is a New Zealander and is also a member of PhraseBase but has less then 50 posts.... It's just that there aren't many New Zealanders here and I don't want to have to find all of the songs. :p And it would also be good to have someone elses point of view.

I'll start looking for songs now and will make a thread in the NZ forum in the weekend. Don't forget to write New Zealand down as entered in the competition. :)

Hi everyone, sorry for the late response.

@FaWzY: Great to see Egypt back this year. :p

@djr33: Last year everyone could join several language teams to help find songs and vote for which songs eventually gets through. But you can only start (host) a song thread for your own country.

@Dominick_Korshanyenko: See what I wrote to @djr33. So you could help find songs, but can't start the thread for the Romanian songs. I hope Lina is willing to help, and otherwise we might have to make an execption for you, because we don't want to miss out on any great Romanian songs. :p Of course it wouldn't be fair to others if you would be representing two different countries.

@Avaldi: Great to see Spain is joining too. I have seen that you have already posted songs, and I'm looking forward to listening to them. :)

@Javier: I completely agree. By the way, will you be representing Mexico?

@Mattie: I'm so looking forward to hear the songs of New Zealand. The songs posted last year where great! I still listen to them when I get a chance.
The rule of members with less than 50 posts was made to prevent people joining phrasebase just for the sake of posting songs. Phrasebase is here to find help with learning languages, not just a song posting site. Of course music is a fun way to listen to other languages, and might even help you learn a language. Anyways, I don't mind making an exception. :p.

Well, I hope this clarifies some things. If you have any other questions or remarks, just let me know.

I'm looking forward to listen to all the different songs in different languages and from different cultures.

I don't get it. This isn't a country forum it's a language forum.

I think we should all be able to start/join any language team we'd like, in that we are all part of any language we speak or are learning, or even just like, or would like to learn.

I speak a bit of Spanish. So I think I should be able to nominate a song for it. And I don't speak Swedish, but I like the language, so why can't I nominate a song?

Anyway, I'm not terribly upset or anything. Just seems a bit strange. Then, as has been said, you get limited representation for smaller/non-national languages, which seems unfair.

Sunday 16th of March 2008 03:12:41 AM
Well, you can still nominate songs for other languages. But now it is only once that thread has been started by a native.

I think the smaller/non-national languages will have limited representation anyways. But if everyone could host any language they want, then at least the chance of participation of those languages could get higher.

I'm curious to what others think about this. if necessary we can adjust the rules.

Thanks Javier. :)

btw, I forgot to answer a question of Dominick_Korshanyenko. The song doesn't necessarily have to be from 2008. Just don't use songs that were in the finals last year. Try to find songs that represent something about your culture, country or language.

Hi guys,

I hope I'm not too late to enter?

Saturday 22nd of March 2008 02:05:49 AM
You can still enter! :)

I cann't wait to hear the songs.

Tuesday 25th of March 2008 05:12:18 AM

Check out some of the songs in the New Zealand forum : http://www.phrasebase.com/discuss/read.php?TID=22025
I'm not sure if we are going to add anymore or not. It's hard to think of them off the top of your head until you hear them on the radio. :p

Wednesday 09th of April 2008 01:16:45 AM

so far I have seen 3 threads with songs. Great work!

Thanks, Mattie!

Now it is time to decide which of the songs that are posted you would like to represent that country. :)

It doesn't seem fair to me to hold a contest between three countries. Lets see if more people join.

You can still join. :)
