Snail mail: How about we go back prehistoric? I think I would like to try some revival. Just for the heck of it. This typing thing is getting me carpal tunnel syndrome.

Anyone wants to snail mail? (Or any suggestions for that matter; whatever it is.) I think it's pretty cute to have something to look forward too, a compromise. lol.

Oh by the way, this isn't a spam. lol

snail mail: Great idea. I have always wondered how it would be like. Snail mail gives an opportunity to see some handwriting and how to natives write, I mean how do they write certain letters, for example in English capital letter for "i" differs a lot from Estonian "i".

Yeah, i also thought about it, I think that's pretty cool,
we could also write a letter and then take a picture or scan it.. :)

btw i've read one book about handwriting analysis, so beware

but how?: So far it is a theory, how to make it real?

Hmm... first I think we need postmail addresses, as in for real. (Don't you guys agree? lol) But I think it needs some time to develop trust so as to give out one's address right? But oh well, if you're comfortable enough with the snail mail then let's get it on! I think it's more fun than sitting in front of the computer hurting your eyes with radiation.

:)

I never realised that! Mind you I haven't seen handwritten Estonian yet. Finnish letters don't seem to differ much from English when handwritten from what I've seen when writing with my friends in Finland.

But, I'm up for snail mail seeing as though I seem to have a lot of time on my hands at the moment.

Snail mail sounds great! (It is especially fun to send postcards when traveling). It would be great to revive this lost art of communication :-p

We could make a distribution list of people interested and exchange mail addresses this way.

(Hi V!)

Does that work?

great: We can for example change addresses like, first we make a list of people and their user names, then we send private messages to everyone in the list with addresses. How is that?
P.S: if you are afraid anyone spying near your home after exchanging addresses..... Cannot you have just a mailbox in a post office? Most of my mail goes by that.

Sandra

I would like to join too. :) Eventhough I don't like giving my post address to easy, I'm willing to take that chance. Maybe when we make the list we can also add which languages everyone wants to write/receive in. Like I can write in dutch and english, and don't mind reading some french and german (I might misunderstand few things though).

_ie

start: Ok, I shall start then:
My username is _ie, of course you know it already lol. And you could write me in English or in Estonian, to be honest I would like to read other languages too, like German, French, Spanish, Turkish, Swedish but I cannot understand completely without English translation and I doubt you have time to translate your own letters. It would be interesting to see some words in your native language too, like "hello" for example.

Let´s start. I think everyone should decide themselves which letter they will send. Of course opinions are always welcome. Maybe some people like postcards as read here...
So what do you want? In which language?
I am not picky... everything is welcome.

Please pm if interesting to receive anything from Estonia, preferably telling your address too lol.

would it work to have one person be responsible for taking pm's/organizing who sends what where? Awhile ago there was a music exchange that was organized by one person who collected pm's/address, etc. and they assigned who would be sending to whom....I think that would be kind of cool as it would give an element of surprise...

I can write in English and Dutch and also in French, German and Portuguese however not as well as the first two. I doubt anyone here would be able to read Zulu but I can also write a bit of that as well.

hey I\'m doing snail mail: Hello! Me too before do snail mail I was like ''Hmm did I gave him\her my address?'' First time I use a postal case... but it cost a lot than received letters at home. But when I used the postal case I made me some friends, that's now make one year we write each other letter. That's really fun to know that this letter travel a lot. Anyway, now what I do (because I search me a couple of new penpals) I start a friendship by internet and after I doing snail mail. The only things I don't like, that's take a lot of time.. like two weeks approximately to your penpal receive your letter. Anyway, snail mail is fun!

May I recommend something, guys?
I am a little worried here. I undertand the purpose is to strenghten friendship. The other is to practice (writing and reading).
I'd suggest you ONLY write in a language you master or your native. If you don't master it, but want to practise, you should send it to a native.
Why am I saying this?
Imagine Tiger thinks he knows a lot of mmm.. let's say Miskito. But he actually is not good at it and he'd like to improve. On my side, I'd like to improve too, and as he is willing to read, I am willing ro write. I think my poor knowledge of the language would damage his poor knowledge of the language. Many mistakes would not be recognized as such and he might adpt some of the mistakes I make. If you are a native, that won't happen!
But to say "mmm... no, I am not that good at Spanish" is a hard thing.
Just my opinion.

Tiger
Sunday 29th of July 2007 11:51:43 PM
@Danial: Sorry, didn't see that.

@Javier: Good point, love how you used my name as the example. -_- lol However, we all have dictionaries or can find one online to translate what we receive, and worst case scenariom, we just ask the person what they wrote. I don't find it to be too big of a deal. ;)

So, let's get this thing started!

Javier
Monday 30th of July 2007 12:03:52 AM
Sorry for using your name for my example, Tiger! :p

But that's precisely my point! If you are going to send me a postcard in Miskito, using an online translator, I'd prefer you write in English!
It is not about the meaning of what you wanted to say It uis about me tinking you know how to write properly when you don't, and me adopting those mistakes in Miskito.

Danial
Monday 30th of July 2007 12:09:07 AM
I really hate those online translators though. Personally, I think we should get try and get our the language we want to write in, at a certain level before we even write in it. Otherwise, I don't know if it might be fun.

BTW Tiger, WHERE'S MY POSTCARD!? :D :p

Tiger
Monday 30th of July 2007 02:44:41 AM
@Javier: German I am conversational in. Spanish I can speak. French I've written letters in it before, and I know enough grammar in all of those to look up a word in a dictionary and fit it into my sentence/postcard or whatever. And I said the online dictionary, not a translator, and that would only be used to translate it once you're received it. ;)

@Danial: Where's my dictionary? And my Singaporean currency? It's only been like 5 months! -_-

You are right....that is why I write only in Estonian or English. Once I chatted in msn with a Turk, after some time my English started to..how to express it in a polite way..."suck"?...misused sufix -ly often and still sometimes, his English was that bad...that I started to learn Turkish to understand his errors.
But I like to read in almost unknown languages, as long I know some grammar, it is fun to translate.

Tiger, I am sorry I took YOUR name for my stupid example.
SORRY! It was just to make a point.
But now that YOU mention it, YES, I have to admit your level of Spanish fits what I was saying. IN MY OPINION (based on what you've written in the Spanish forum), I'd say that if you are going to write in spanish, it'd be to someone who has a VERY GOOD command of Spanish. If that person has, let's say, your level, you are probably going to confuse him.
Thanks for clarifying it with a real life example.
Anyway, at the end everybody has the right to do whatever they want.

frogg018
Monday 30th of July 2007 04:59:43 AM
lets be civil here....

I think maybe what language everything gets written in should be decided upon between the people writing each other....although they should know if you are writing them in a language the is not your native language so that they can be aware of possible grammtical errors.

cleomau
Monday 30th of July 2007 05:08:33 AM
I would see no problem in two people conversing in a different language that one (or both) might not know very well. As long as both people know that they don't speak it well, it's not really a problem; it's not always counter productive to do so. But I would definately think that each person would need to inform the other of their weaknesses in whatever language they'd be conversing in.

I'm sorry, Javier. You are completely right. I understand. And I'd just like to say that I overreacted about the whole using my name thing. ¡Arrepentido!

@frogg018: Agreed. :)

@cleomau: Yeah, that was kind of what I was trying to point out. But you expained it much better, gracias.

@all: Ok, I think we should just drop this whole thing about the languages. If someone wants to know what language to write in, then I think that they should just look in that person's profile, or base it on what they've seen them write in. At least, that's my opinion. But everyone can just do what they want.

We all cool?

Who am I suppose to give my address too? LOL.

How about writing in a common language both "exchanging parties"(so to speak) know? And then include some translations (if they want to) in the "other" languages they know.

Chill it out guys. This thing is suppose to be for fun. Not for getting all your blood pressures rise. Hypertension pill costs more than the postmail fee.

Hi all, so far I have received about half of the addressess. I will wait till at least Monday August 6 2007 for people to respond.

@tiger: Thanks for trying to do the same. Some have already send me their address, so do you mind if I just continue to gather them?

So if you want to join then PM your address and the language you can read and write in to me. Then I will send them to the ones who have joined. Don't forget your name, unless you want your profile name on a letter/postcard :D.

Since sharing your address is a personal thing to do I understand if you don't want your address send to everyone. If you want to have your address send to a limited group, for example those that have been registered to phrasebase longer, or have a certain amount of posts then just let me know, or you can arrange contact yourself, whatever you prefer. I only look at post count on the day day that I send the addressess which will probably be after the weekend.

I think snail mail is an outdated concept when we have a faster, more efficient, less likely to get lost, free version of it right here on the internet: email, and if you want to see someone's handwriting just ask them to take a picture of it and send it ot you

Magic of snail mail?
Imagine, you may scan your handwriting and everything but it is not the same.
Imagine, you can touch the paper your penpal has touched, you feel that human closeness. You will see which pen was used, was it the pen or an ink...(ok, I understand ink is not used much these days). You will see the envelope, has it been damaged by rain or other circumstances. Is it perfumed lol... could continue but in a fear that can labeled as a lunatic it is better stop now:P.

Oh well, we're not actually pushing everybody to join the club, either you're in our you're out.

The internet as a media for communication is the conventional trend right now as snail mail had been before. But it spoils the real thrill of everything.. plus, you'd still have to worry about carpal tunnel syndrome, hyperhidrosis, and perhaps, a premature cataract just when you're drop dead agitated about your blood pressure (or your lovelife) problems.

I think it's fun receiving mails, you'll never know what you're gonna get. And Ie, I guess you're right. lol

I'm proud to announce that I kicked off. I just posted my postcard in the mailbox so in a few hours it should be on its journey across the world. I'm curious how long it'll be until it arrives. Maybe it's an idea to post how long it takes for a letter to arrive, so we can compare the countries' postal services.

Hmm.. let's see if those postmail systems need restructuring.

Hi all,
So far I have seventeen people who signed up, namely:

_ie
Anya
Branco
Citlalli
Danial
Dominick_Korshanyenko
ElisaJane
ellem84
Fawzy
frogg018
Mariam87
marja
MIHA
pitz
Rainbow_Oasis
Rexy

Of these persons, I have got 10 addressess. I don't think it fair to send the addresses to those who are not sharing theirs. What do you think? Thus so far I am only going to send the addresses to those 10 who did share their addressess. (Also taken into account peoples preferences.)

@those who have received addressess:
and you can always try to ask more people for addressess.

@ those who are late, and still want to join:
you can either PM me and get a list of addresses through me (I keep the preferences of those who had one, so I won't send it just to anyone) or even just contact the persons you want to contact yourself.

@ those who don't want to share their address through me:
that is perfectly fine too, you are welcome to contact people yourself and share addressess.

If anyone wants to write with me then I'd rather organise it directly. I don't really like giving my address out too much. I can limit the number that way too because I don't have time to write to everyone! :p

I sent you one yesterday Tiger.

Ellem, I expect mine to arrive within a week's time from now. My post office website states that it takes about 5-7 days to get to Australia, which is closest to your country which isn't listed but I expect it to be around 10 days in total, so I guess it should arrive somewhere next week.

_ie
Saturday 11th of August 2007 08:14:04 PM

Rainbow I got your postcard ages ago, when I was on holidays but thanks to some circumstances I managed to see it yesterday. My father owns this PO BOX actually and he forgot to hand my post over. It had arrived on August 16th. Pretty fast I guess. I apologise, since all the addresses were here, you can get yours since tomorrow, I mean I shall send it then.

Anyway, thanks a lot Sandy (rainbow_oasis). I liked the windmill more than the biker. lol. And Tiger, I'd think about the real state property once I learned how to swim ;) Branco, I haven't recieved yours yet.

For anyone else who wants to do the postcard thing with me, it may be a while before I can get online after we move unless I can get to the library so I'll try to check PB as much as I can when I can get to a computer. Still here till the weekend :)

Anonymous

lol. if u sent me a cheese then it's gonna be party time for the mice. do u think they would still eat the 2-month old cheese?

Branco
Saturday 06th of October 2007 12:45:18 AM
They probably will :) but it'll also depend on how it's conserved on its trip. Most cheeses take months to ripe depending on the type of cheese. Old cheese is supposed to ripe for a year so the extra two months won't matter much I think as long it is not exposed to very high temperatures and too much humidity.

Branco

3 weeks that's quite fast. Cheese is one of the favourite foods in the Netherlands. The average Dutch person eats it almost every day. Most people put a few slices of cheese on their bread and eat it for lunch or breakfast. That's a very typical Dutch thing.

Hello!

Estonians do not celebrate Halloween as much are Americans, only few youngsters...
Life has been so busy...maybe I have promised to send a postcard but some of you have not received it, please let me know. I am not sure in anything at the moment.

oy, its been awhile since I've been in this forum. Looks like everyone sent quite a few postcards! Sorry I wasn't able to participate much, I moved from the US to Germany right after we started it :( Thanks to Branco for the postcard - I just got it about a month ago when I flew back home for a visit to my parents. If anyone is interested in getting a postcard/mail from Germany, send me a PM.
