Good beginner\'s book - I found this little book the last time I was in Kathmandu and I\'d like to recommend it:

Shrestha, Sushila, An Introduction to the Nepali Language Text Book, Share Nepal, Kathmandu, 2004, ISBN 99946-31-96-9.

It does have some translation errors both on the English and Nepali sides, but I think it does a good job of immersing you in the language without intimidating you with the Devanagari and grammar rules right away. If you simply want to learn to converse with Nepalis it\'s very useful. I like the phrase lists at the beginning of the book - they came in handy on my last trip.

Any other book recommendations, besides Teach Yourself Nepali and the Lonely Planet phrasebooks?:-)

- ho! arko kitaabharu chhan! (Yes, there are some other books).

Lassi pointed it out to me and I was able to find it in Kathmandu. It would be an advanced book, though, enough devanagari to intimidate anyone at first ;).

It is called: Nepali Language 1 and 2 by Dr. Bala Ram Aryal.
ISBN: 99933-655-0-5.

It is a very thorough textbook on Nepali grammar and has full texts for translating and many exercises.

I also found a lonely planet phrasebook in Hong Kong that I couldn\'t find in the US, and that one seems jam packed with useful words and phrases. One caveat, this phrasebook has some sayings that are not used, so I wouldn\'t recommend it as a sole source.

If you find anything else, please tell us! I am so glad to finally have something to continue learning with.

- Anya, as you asked me in the other thread - of course you can call me Claudi. Lots of people do in daily life. :)

I also want to contribute something to this thread concerning books.

On my search for language books I found a publishing house in New York City which issues phrasebooks in many languages.

Here are the data concerning the Nepali phrasebook:

Prakash Raj
NEPALI-ENGLISH/ENGLISH-NEPALI DICTIONARY & PHRASEBOOK
published by: Hippocrene Books Inc., NY
ISBN: 0-7818-0957-6
The price is around 12 $.

It´s a two-way dictionary plus phrasebook. Concerning its content you can find out more here: www.hippocrenebooks.com

I think this series of language books is worth to check it out.(I am very happy with my Slovene phrasebook.) These books are handy to take them with you when travelling. Unluckily they are without any audio material in all languages.

I hope I could help you Nepali learners a little bit and wish you all much success. :)
