| Nepali Dialog 101 - Let's try a begining level dialog that can go in any direction? The emphasis would be on using common words and I hope that Shyam and other native speakers or student could help us out. [i] Here we go: Write a sentence and a question for the following person. | - Ramro Kaam (Good Job)! Lindsay and Anya! What a great start!. I have got to add something on what Anya wrote. I am exactly not sure what you meant by JanaManche. Both Jana and Manche means people. Janata means citizens and manche is more common form of saying human being. You could have either said sabaiijana(all of you people. I think sabaii(all)jana would be more appropriate to be used in this case. Also how Nepali has two forms of almost every pronouns meaning that younger people are called by different prounouns than elder people not just "you" unlike in English. So Timro (usually younger to you) and Tapein or hajur (for elder people with respect) is appropriate to be used. Lindsay when you wrote kasto in the last sentence, you probably have not figured out how to write half letter but yea sa part should have been half "sa". Other than that you guys did pretty good job. I am impressed by it. Keep it on! I am gonna teach you how to say I am Shyam. Ma(I) Shyam hun(am). Timi Lindsay haau(are). Ani(and) timi Anya haau.(are) Ramro kaam sabaii jana. "-ing" forms: for ex. english speaking person /= a person who speaks english/ is "agreji bolne manchhe" So verb base+"ne". but "going to school is difficult" is "schoolmaa jaana gahro chha" So verb base+"na" ... I think that you ave to use "-ne" if it's a description or an attribute of somebody you are speaking of. If you want to say a verb in general case (?), as in the second case then use "-na". But for ex. there is a separete tense as well ... the present continous ... it'structure is: verb base+"iraaheko" + the conjugation of chha you have to use "irahanubhaeko" for tapaai and "irahekaa" for haami, timi and uniharu. for ex. The baby is sleeping = bachchaa sutiraaheko chha. And here is my question: What's the difference between the present continous tense (the one I wrote above) and the present progressive tense (verb base+"-dai"+conjugation of chha ... for ex. ma nepali sikdai chhu = I'm learning nepali) | |

| - Hey Ize, thanks for the correction on anaya didi's comments. Well to answer ur question about having difference between present continous and present progressive tense. Either way is correct. There is no difference what so ever. It means the same. Like Baccha suteraheko cha can be said as Baccha sutiraheko cha. Or Ma Nepali sikdaii chu is as same as Ma Nepali Sikiraheko chu. Some other examples: Ma lekdaii chu.(I am writing) or Ma Lekhiraheko chu. Ma Burger kahadaii chu or Ma Burger Kaheraheko chu. Any questions let me Know. Dhanyabad. Keep it up guys. It\'s funny, before I submitted my post, I wrote Garnuparchha, but then thought that I should use future tense instead of the infinitive... I was wrong. It\'s really interesting how this works! I tried to find a Nepali speaking person here in St Petersburg but there are no such people. I even went to the Indian-Nepali restaurant with hope to ask a cook to teach me. But the restaurant is about to close, and all the Nepali people go home! So, my only opportunity now is to learn on-line. Below are the short answer to your questions, and my weak attempts to translate some of them into Nepali! I use some phrase book and dictionary for this, but can hardly imagine what it sounds like.
