4.2 – TREMA (¨) - Trema: ¨ ü
The \"trema\" comes only on the letter [b]U[/b]. It indicates that the U is pronounced in these syllables:
güe, güi, qüe, qüi
For example: The word guerra (war) doesn\'t have the \"trema\". So, the syllable gue is pronounced like in [b]ge[/b]t. The U isn\'t pronounced. But in the word pingüim (penguin), the letter U is pronounced. The same apllies to the letter [b]Q[/b], but it has the sound of the letter [b]K[/b] in English.
E.g.: agüentar (to stand, to put up with)
lingüiça (sausage)
cinqüenta (fifty)
eqüino (equine)

- Hi gzimize! I just want to add a quick note: in standard Portuguese the trema is not used. :)

- Ah... That\'s very good! i don\'t know much about standard portuguese, so, I post about the Brazilian Portuguese. I ask you and other people from Portugal to post differences like this.
