Help me turn to english this sentence - How can I turn to English this sentence:

"Ele arfava enquanto contava meio engasgado".

The character came in a rush and is trying to tell a story.
I need a translation that fits, as close as possible, to the original in Portuguese.

Thank you!

- hallo, danhort!
he was panting (not painting!) while he was telling somewhat choked.
contar in this case means to tell, but the same verb is used with the meaning of to count. e.g.: i counted how many stars were in the sky - eu contei quantas estrelas estavam no céu

Obrigado - Obrigado gzimize.
Eu não conhecia o verbo to pant e ainda tenho alguma dificuldade com os tempos verbais.
A sua sugestão ajudou bastante.
Até mais.

- in a literary context, you may be more likely to see "half choked" instead of "somewhat choked".

"half choked" sounds more dramatic. "somewhat" is a little less..
