redondo?

Very good!!

In brazilian portuguese (and maybe in european portuguese as well) we use \"quadrado\" to mean \"hard\", \"narrow-minded\", or \"awkward\", regarding people or things. And we use \"redondo\" to mean \"easy\", \"smooth\" and so on, to convey the opposite idea.

There´s a beer ad clip that shows that :-)

Some corrections now.... - Folks,

there´s a lot of posts, in the past weeks, which deserve some comments; unfortunately, so far I haven´t had enough time to make it in a timely fashion :-)

Before starting it, I must say that I feel really delighted to see your questions and answers, sometimes it´s not easy to find the \"right\" word, and in some cases you guys and gals came up with very ingenious alternatives. Cool!

I´ll write down these comments in different posts, you might be confused with one only long post otherwise.

antônimo de gostoso
The answer to this one was: desgostoso

Well, although \"desgostoso\" seems to be the exact contrary of \"gostoso\", and it´s grammatically correct, maybe it isn´t the best answer. Strange but true :-)

We use \"gostoso\" to mean delicious, tasteful, because \"gosto\" means \"taste\". Example:
- que bolo gostoso! [what a delicious cake!]

But if the cake isn´t that delicious, the word \"ruim\" is used:
- que bolo ruim! [what a tasteless cake!]

Well, and what about \"desgostoso\"? It means \"displeased\" or \"sorrowful\", because \"desgosto\" translates to \"displeasure\" or \"sorrow\". Example:

- Ele parecia desgostoso. [He looked displeased.]

The explanation...

[*e antónimo de \\\"um dia solar\\\"=> \\\"um dia nebuloso/enevoado\\\", sim?:)]

quando extraterrestre = ang. alien (noun) => homem
e quando trata-se de adjectivo => \\\"terrestre\\\" ou \\\"de terra\\\" :)
and the final comment:

ah, i was thinking in the wrong direction. Until this day I didn\'t even the know the word solar in Port, so I guess I\'ve learnt it today ;).
My corrections: to express a wheather condition, \"solar\" isn´t correct, we use \"ensolarado\". So:

- um dia ensolarado => a sunny day
- um dia nublado => a cloudy day
- um dia nebuloso => a foggy day

\"Solar\", as an adjective, means \"that comes from the sun\". So, I can say \"vento solar\" (solar wind), \"energia solar\" (solar energy) or \"ano solar\" (solar year).

When considering this meaning, IMO the best antonym for \"solar\" is \"lunar\", because brazilian indians think moon and sun are opposite (much like \"yin\" and \"yang\" concepts, respectively).

I checked the dictionary, however, just to be sure. To my surprise, there are MANY meanings for \"solar\", because the word is a noun, an adjective and a verb, with 2 or 3 meanings in each class. I won´t show them here because even native speakers know it all. Really interesting anyway.

To Elamelka and Branco, I´d say, in portuguese: talvez vocês miraram no que viram e acertaram no que não viram. (maybe you aimed at what you saw, but shot what you didn´t see :-)

demorado ?
Dackel has a reasonable doubt, the correct is \"prolixo\". The word \"demorado\" is the antonym for \"curto\" or \"breve\", meaning a small time interval. Dunno if \"concise\" in english may mean \"brief\" (in time), I think of it as a synonym for \"terse\" or \"succint\" (small number of words).

This is kinda subtle...

calmo
Well, the best antonym for \"preocupado\" is \"despreocupado\" :-) We can use \"tranqüilo\" as well; these words regard a state of mind in time, so to speak. Example:
- Ela estudou bem para a prova, está despreocupada. (She prepared well for the exam, she´s at ease.)

The antonym for \"calmo\" is \"agitado\" or \"tenso\", and it refers to some behaviour or trait. Examples:
- O mar está calmo. (The sea is calm)
- Ele é um menino calmo. (He is a calm boy)

Replace \"calmo\" by \"agitado\" and you get the opposite meaning.

- Elamelka,

difficult, very difficult...
I\'m afraid there\'s no antonym to fit here. If I say
> Eu superei meu medo [I overcame my fear]
the \"perfect\" antonym may be using the negative form...
> Eu não superei meu medo
or the passive voice, conveying the opposite meaning
> Eu fui superado pelo meu medo [I was overcame with my fear]

On the other hand, an \"approximate\" antonym could be \"fracassar\" (to fail). It´s not an \"elegant\" solution however...

> Eu superei meu medo. [I overcame my fear]
Antonym
> Eu fracassei diante do meu medo. [I failed \"before\" my fear - think if my fear as a huge obstacle and I didn´t overcome it, I wasn´t up to it, so I stand here looking it from the bottom]

Well, I stop here, dunno whether I made myself clear :-)
