LIÇÃO 4 - ACENTUAÇÃO - Oi!

The lesson 4 talks about acentuation (and other diacritics used in the Portuguese language). Portuguese has three accents (acentos):
Acento agudo: ´ á é í ó ú
Acento circunflexo: ^ â ê ô
Crase (also known as [b]acento grave[/b]): ` à

The two first accents are used to indicate the stress in a word, and the third shows the contraction of the preposition [b]a[/b] with some words.

We will first take a look in some diacritics (sinais gráficos) used in Portuguese. Note that they aren\'t considered accents and they\'re used to show that that letter has a specific pronunciation.

Note that both accents and diacritics are considered as their simple counterpart, they’re not a letter. So in dictionary you will see:
acusar - água – alfabeto – praça - pracinha

Exemples - (´) - Água (water), pássaro (bird), d\'água (of water).
(~) - Coração (heard)
(`) - às 7 horas (at 7 o\'clock)
(^) - freqüência (frequency)
(¨) - freqüência (frequency)
