Portuguese Verbs - How many tenses of verbs are there in Portuguese?

What are they?

-SR

P.S. I haven\'t looked deep into the archives to find anything on this topic, but I would appreciate that someone will answer my question even if there was a topic.

- About portuguese verbs, prior knowledge on other romance languages (specially spanish) is very helpful, these languages share the same basic verb structure.

Portuguese verb tenses are divided into three \"moods\":
- indicative: sure facts
- subjunctive: condition, wish, possible fact
- imperative: command or advice

Tenses can be simple (the verb alone) or compound (auxiliary verb + main verb). Let´s talk about simple tenses only (for compound tenses can be VERY difficult and/or confusing :-) There´s a lot of cool stuff about compound tenses in Sonia\'s portuguese site:
http://www.sonia-portuguese.com/text/verbs.htm#Tenses

Furthermore, you can query verb conjugations at
http://linguistica.insite.com.br/cgi-bin/conjugue
just type in the werb and click on \"conjugar\" button.

Let´s list simple verb tenses using \"falar\" (to speak).

Formas nominais (Nominal forms)
Infinitivo (Infinitive): falar
Gerúndio (Present Participle): falando
Particípio (Past Participle): falado

Modo Indicativo (Indicative Mood)
Presente (Simple Present): eu falo
Pretérito Perfeito (Simple Past): eu falei
Pretérito Imperfeito (Past Imperfect): eu falava
Pretério Mais-que-perfeito (Past Perfect): eu falara
Futuro do Presente (Simple Future): eu falarei
Futuro do Pretérito (Conditional): eu falaria

Modo Subjuntivo (Subjunctive Mood)
Present (Present Subjunctive): que eu fale
Imperfeito (Imperfect Subjunctive): se eu falasse
Futuro Simples (Future Subjunctive): quando eu falar

Modo Imperativo (Command)
Afirmativo (Command): fala tu
Negativo (Negative Command): não fales tu

(Finally, there´s another tense called \"Personal Infitinive\", a rather unusual form that AFAIK exists in portuguese language only)

Infinitivo Pessoal (Personal Infinitive): por falar eu

Hope that helps.
