Verbe: Present Tense

A verb is an action that anything or anyone does. We use verbs to explain what things we are doing. The present tense in Romanian expresses present actions and actions that are taking place NOW.

I run home.
Eu alerg acas?.

Conjugation in the Present Tense

We'll start with the Present tense because this is the most basic concept of verbs in Romanian.

The dictionary form of the verb is the infinitive. The ending of the infinitive indicates the conjugation of the verb. There are four conjugations in Romanian. The final vowel or vowels of the infinitive indicate the conjugation of the verb:

1st conjugation – verbs ending in -a: a cânta-to sing, a dansa-to dance.
2nd conjugation – verbs ending in -ea: a vedea-to see, a ap?rea-to appear.
3rd conjugation – verbs ending in -e: a cere-to ask (for), a face-to do.
4th conjugation – verbs ending in -i /î: a dormi-to run, a citi-to read.

The most numerous groups are the verbs in -a and the verbs in -i. I'll talk more about infinitives later. Verbs in the 1st and 4th Conjugation can have infixes. Infixes are syllables added between the stem of the verb and the ending attached. Remember the stem is the infinitive minus its ending that conjugation endings are added to. Infix verbs must be memorized that they have an infix there are no clues or hints!

A Verbs

- There are two kinds of A Verbs with an infix and without. Those that do not have an infix are conjugated like A Cânta- to sing.

a cânta- to singInfinitive
Eu- cântNoi- cânt?mFirst Person
Tu- cân?iVoi- cânta?iSecond Person
El/Ea- cânt?Ei/Ele- cânt?Third Person

- Verbs that take the infix (-ez-/-eaz-) are conjugated like A Dansa- To Dance.

a dansa- to danceInfinitive
Eu- dansezNoi- dans?mFirst Person
Tu- danseziVoi- dansa?iSecond Person
El/Ea- danseaz?Ei/Ele- danseaz?Third Person

- Notice that infix verbs do not change in the Noi or Voi form. -Ez is added to the First and Second Person while -Eaz is added to the Third Person.

For -a verbs they usually take the following endings that stay true even if it is an infix verb.

Eu- nothing take off the a, Noi- add ?m to the stem
Tu- add i to the stem, Voi- add a?i to the stem
El/Ea- add ? to the stem, Ei/Ele- add ? to the stem

*The forms of the 3rd pers. sing. and 3rd pers. pl. of all regular verbs in -a are identical:

el/ea intr? = ei/ele intr?
el/ea întârzie = ei/ele întârzie
el/ea danseaz? = ei/ele danseaz?
el/ea lucreaz? = ei/ele lucreaz?
el/ea parcheaz? = ei/ele parcheaz?
el/ea copiaz? = ei/ele copiaz?

Ea Verbs

- Ea verbs are all conjugated the same way and do not have infixes. But I will give you two examples because many EA verbs follow a constant mutation pattern.

a vedea- to seeInfinitive
Eu- v?dNoi- vedemFirst Person
Tu- veziVoi- vede?iSecond Person
El/Ea- vedeEi/Ele- v?dThird Person

- Ea verbs like A Ap?rea- To appear follow a mutation pattern where in all forms except the Noi and Voi form the ? becomes an a.

a ap?rea- to seeInfinitive
Eu- aparNoi- ap?remFirst Person
Tu- apariVoi- ap?re?iSecond Person
El/Ea- apareEi/Ele- aparThird Person

-Ea verbs always take these endings.

Eu- nothing take off the ea, Noi- add em to the stem
Tu- add i to the stem, Voi- add e?i to the stem
El/Ea- add e to the stem, Ei/Ele- same as the Eu form

*The forms of the 1st pers. sing. and 3rd pers. pl. of all regular verbs in -ea are identical:

eu v?d = ei/ele v?d
eu pot = ei/ele pot
eu apar = ei/ele apar
eu dispar = ei/ele dispar

E Verbs

-E Verbs also do not take infixes. Whoo! They all take the same endings so i will only give you one example this time.

a cere- to askInfinitive
Eu- cerNoi- ceremFirst Person
Tu- ceriVoi- cere?iSecond Person
El/Ea- cereEi/Ele- cerThird Person

- E Verbs take these endings.

Eu- nothing take off the e, Noi- add em to the stem
Tu- add i to the stem, Voi- add e?i to the stem
El/Ea- add e to the stem, Ei/Ele- same as the Eu form

*The forms of the 1st pers. sing. and 3rd pers. pl. of all regular verbs in -ea are identical:

Eu- cer = Ei/Ele- cer
Eu- fac = Ei/Ele- fac
Eu- merg = Ei/Ele- merg

I verbs

- There are two kinds of I verbs one is normal and one takes an infix. Normal I verbs are conjugated like A Dormi- to sleep.

a dormi-to sleepInfinitive
Eu- dormNoi- dormimFirst Person
Tu- dormiVoi- dormi?iSecond Person
El/Ea- doarmeEi/Ele- dormThird Person

- I verbs with an infix are conjugated like A Citi- To read. They take -esc in the 1st person and the 3rd person plural and they take -e?t in the Second Person and 3rd person singular.

a citi-to readInfinitive
Eu- citescNoi- citimFirst Person
Tu- cite?tiVoi- citi?iSecond Person
El/Ea- cite?teEi/Ele- citescThird Person

- I Verbs take these endings.

Eu- nothing take off the i, Noi- add im to the stem
Tu- add i to the stem, Voi- add i?i to the stem
El/Ea- add e to the stem, Ei/Ele- same as the Eu form

*The forms of the 1st pers. sing. and 3rd pers. pl. of all regular verbs in -ea are identical:

Eu dorm = Ei/Ele dorm
Eu citesc = Ei/Ele citesc

Î Verbs

- Î Verbs also have two forms one with an infix and one without. Î greatly resemble A Verbs in how they are conjugated.

a coborî-to descendInfinitive
Eu- coborNoi- coborâmFirst Person
Tu- coboriVoi- coborâ?iSecond Person
El/Ea- coboar?Ei/Ele- coborThird Person

- Î Verbs with infixes are conjugated like A Hot?rî- To Decide. They take -?sc in the 1st Person and the 3rd person plural and they take -??t in the Second Person and Third Person singular. The Noi and Voi form do not change.

a hot?rî-to decideInfinitive
Eu- hot?r?scNoi- hot?râmFirst Person
Tu- hot?r??tiVoi- hot?râ?iSecond Person
El/Ea- hot?r??teEi/Ele- hot?r?scThird Person

For -î verbs they usually take the following endings.

Eu- nothing take off the î, Noi- add âm to the stem
Tu- add i to the stem Voi- add â?i to the stem
El/Ea- add ?/e to the stem Ei/Ele- add ?/e to the stem

*The forms of the 1st pers. sing. and 3rd pers. pl. of all regular verbs in -î are identical:

Eu cobor = Ei/Ele cobor
Eu hot?r?sc = Ei/Ele hot?r?sc

Exercises

Conjugate these verbs in the Present Tense. Remember that mutations will apply.

1. a discuta- to discuss
2. a completa- to complete
3. a putea- to be able
4. a disp?rea- to disappear
5. a merge- to go/walk
6. a scrie- to write
7. a pune- to put
8. a veni- to come
9. a vorbi- to speak
10. a omorî- to kill
11. a hot?rî- to decide

The infixes for A verbs are __________ and _____________.
The four types of Conjugations are ___, ___, ___, and ____.

Helpful Hints

- Spend about a week learning each type of Conjugation.
- Apply examples to verbs you know.
- I'm planning on making a lesson on mutations for later.

P.S. Mike I hope this answers your questions about the Present Tense.

I am ready. Sunt gata.

I had to ask my colleagues who are teachers of Romanian.
Am întrebat colegele de român?.

The explanations go as follows.
Explica?iile sunt urm?toarele.

1. 'a iubi' ?i 'a vorbi' sunt de origine slav?.
'a iubi' ?i 'a vorbi' have Slavonik ethymology.
'a dormi' has Latin ethymology.

2. You need to make the difference between the verbs that end up as a root and those that have endings or suffixes or particles.
Trebuie s? faci deosebirea între verbele care se termin? cu particul? sau au doar r?d?cina.

e.g.: 'eu dorm' - root
'eu vorbesc' - '-esc' is an ending
'eu iubesc' - '-esc' is an ending

Do you understand what I am saying?
În?elegi explica?ia?

Cred c? este mai u?or cu varianta 2.
I think that variant 2 is the best.

The problem is that all these verbs belong to conjugation IV.
Toate aceste verbe sunt la conjugarea IV.

mike111
Tuesday 30th of September 2008 05:23:43 PM
Very interesting. Though i wouldn't know which words originate from either slavic or latin. This knowledge will help me learn the differences.

So, verbs that end in 'I' but have a root in the first person singular are of slavic origin.

I do understand, knowing this will help me learn. This was an interesting lesson. Thanks for taking the time to ask your colleagues.

daniela
Thursday 02nd of October 2008 02:09:49 AM
I do not know about the difference as to the Latin or Slavik origin and the root, but my colleague said that
1. verbs, root
2. verbs, root plus ending

????

I hope you understand and can use this

Este verb reflexiv.
It is a reflexive verb.

'se' is the reflexive pronoun.

'se' este pronumele reflexiv.

'a holba ochii', de exemplu. 'ochii' este complement direct, direct object.

'a holba' - ce?

Hey Kenny, you have a typo in your exercise.

1. a discuta- to sing

a discuta = to discuss
a cânta = to sing

Thanks Mike I'll change it. I'm surprised there weren't more mistakes I was rushing.
