Verbe: The Subjunctive

The Subjunctive Mood is used a lot more in Romanian than it is in English. The Subjunctive indicates possible or desired actions. In English it is mainly used with certain expressions. In Romanian though it has many more uses.

First let's talk about how the subjunctive is formed...

Forming the Subjunctive

- The Subjunctive Present in Romanian is the same as the indicative present tense except in the 3rd person. So that means in most instances it will stay the same when used.

Eu lucrez. I work. Eu vreau s? lucrez. I want to work.
Tu lucrezi. You work. Tu po?i s? lucrezi. You can work.
Noi lucr?m. We work. Noi nu vrem s? lucr?m. We don't want to work.
Voi lucra?i. You work. Voi trebuie s? lucra?i. You have to work.

- To form the 3rd person singular and plural all you have to do is switch the ending with its opposite. In other words. A verbs end in -e and EA, E, I verbs end in ?. Here are some examples of regular subjunctive verbs. The 3rd person plural is always the same as the 3rd person sing. in all 4 conjugations.

a cânta- to singInfinitive
Eu- cântNoi- cânt?mFirst Person
Tu- cân?iVoi- cânta?iSecond Person
El/Ea- cânteEi/Ele- cânteThird Person

a vedea- to seeInfinitive
Eu- v?dNoi- vedemFirst Person
Tu- veziVoi- vede?iSecond Person
El/Ea- vad?Ei/Ele- vad?Third Person

a cere- to askInfinitive
Eu- cerNoi- ceremFirst Person
Tu- ceriVoi- cere?iSecond Person
El/Ea- cear?Ei/Ele- cear?Third Person

a dormi-to sleepInfinitive
Eu- dormNoi- dormimFirst Person
Tu- dormiVoi- dormi?iSecond Person
El/Ea- doarm?Ei/Ele- doarm?Third Person

a coborî-to descendInfinitive
Eu- coborNoi- coborâmFirst Person
Tu- coboriVoi- coborâ?iSecond Person
El/Ea- coboreEi/Ele- coboreThird Person

- Notice that many forms are changed because of mutations like in a dormi and a cere.

- When infixes are added it becomes a little harder. They always have a mutation. Eaz? becomes eze. E?te becomes easc?. ?ste becomes ?sc?. Here are some examples of infix verbs.

a dansa- to danceInfinitive
Eu- dansezNoi- dans?mFirst Person
Tu- danseziVoi- dansa?iSecond Person
El/Ea- dansezeEi/Ele- dansezeThird Person

Eu- citescNoi- citimFirst Person
Tu- cite?tiVoi- citi?iSecond Person
El/Ea- citeasc?Ei/Ele- citeasc?Third Person

a hot?rî-to decideInfinitive
Eu- hot?r?scNoi- hot?râmFirst Person
Tu- hot?r??tiVoi- hot?râ?iSecond Person
El/Ea- hot?r?sc?Ei/Ele- hot?r?sc?Third Person

Use of the Subjunctive

- In English when we have more than one verb together the second one is an infinitive. However in Romanian the subjunctive is used to indicate a possible or desired action.

El vrea s? mearg? la plaj?. He wants to go to the beach.
Ea înva?? s? vorbeasc? române?te. She learns to speak Romanian.
Noi putem s? vorbim engleza. We can speak English.

- The subjunctive is used after the verbs a ?ti- to know, a putea- to be able, a pl?cea- to like, and the adverb numai- just/only.

El ?tie s? citeasc?. He knows how to read.
Ea poate s? citeasc?. She can read.
Le place s? mearg? la plaj?. They like to go to the beach.
Numai s? ajungem mai repede. It's just that I want us to get there faster.

- When used alone the Subjunctive takes the meaning "should".

S? plec? Should I leave?
S? mai stau? Should I stay?
De ce s? plece? Why should he leave?
Ce s? fac? What should I do?

- Lastly the Subjunctive is used after certain expressions. In these cases the s? can be translated as "that". Some of these expressions are: trebuie, e necesar, e obligatoriu, e bine, e r?u, e comod, e u?or, as well as after some reflexive verbs in the 3rd person: se poate, se cuvine, se cade, se recomand?, etc.

El trebuie s? mearg?. He must go.
E necesar s? vorbim cu el. It's necessary that we speak with him.
Se poate s? vorbim române?te? Is it possible that we could speak Romanian?
Se recomand? s? nu fugi, Domnul Bond. It's recommended that you don't run Mr. Bond.

(Sorry I just saw Quantum of Solace. ;) )

Informa?iile Importante!

- So remember in the Subjunctive the 3rd person endings switch, it is ALWAYS preceded by the conjunction s?, and it is used when there is one verb after another.

Remember Mike as a general rule after a preposition don't use the definite article unless the noun is modified by an adjective.

Cânt la saxofon.
Cânt la saxofonul meu.
Cânt la saxofonul bun.

Merg la parc.
Merg la parcul mare.

Foarte bine.

S? te ajut pu?in. 'Îmi plac ideile tale.'

'We have to eat to eat - Trebuie s? mânc?m.' Nu ?tiu dac? ai vrut s? scrii 'trebuie' sau altceva. I do not know if you wanted to write 'trebuie' or something else.

Cu pl?cere. M? bucur foarte mult c? ?i-a pl?cut.

Uite, urmeaz? ceva.

Li s-a spus s? închid? u?a. Lor li s-a spus s? închid? u?a. dar nu este nevoie de pronumele 'lor' pentru c? este subîn?eles. It is an understatement.
