Hai România!!: I couldn't resist starting a thread in honour of Euro 2008, with apologies to those who are not in Europe, or don't know anything about football!

I am a big football fan, and since England failed to qualify for this competition (grrrr!!!) I've been happily supporting Romania. And they are doing very well - holding their own in the 'group of death' against Italy, The Netherlands and France! So far they have drawn against Italy and France, and a win against the Netherlands would see them through to the knock-out stages!

Well done Romania!

Last fall I was hearing about how well the Romanian fotbal (soccer to us Americans, desigur) team was doing, and apparently this is carrying over.

I'm glad this thread was started, it might've been extrememly embarrassing for me to turn up in Bucuresti as thoroughly ignorant about "Euro 2008" as I was before clicking aici.

Unfortunately Becky Americans just don't like soccer. I on the other hand LOVE it. Consequently I hate football (the American kind). I always wanted to keep track of a European team and root for them but the only one I've ever heard of is Manchester United. So, what is the Romanian team called? Do they have a mascot and a website?

Thanks Becky!

I always cheer for USA and Italy, where my family is from originally. But I would certainly support Romania. I must admit that I am not a huge football fan. My favorite sport is hockey . Does Romania have a hockey team?

Thank you for Romania: Bravo Becky,

1000 points for you that you are A Romanian team fan.

I, for one, am a football fan, in a medium/moderate way, and a Romanian team fan, but being busy with my work and MA exams, I did not have time to watch the games.

Thank you for keeping me updated.

Do you know what the Romanian fans shout on the stadium to support the team?

Ideea ta este excelentă! Bine spus - Hai România!!!!
┼×i mie ├Ämi place fotbalul ┼či urm─âresc meciurile echipei na┼úionale, f─âr─â doar ┼či poate! Sper s─â batem Olanda ┼či s─â trecem de grup─â. Dup─â cum ┼čti┼úi, noi am b─âtut Olanda ├«n Rom├ónia ┼či am f─âcut egal la ei acas─â!

Your idea is excellent! Well said - Hai România!
I also like football and I'm watching the games of the national team. I hope we'll win the game with Holland and pass the group. As you know, we beat Holland in Romanian and played a draw in Holland!

Bun─â people!
Just a question: How could we translate "Hai România"? Is it like our "Ole, España"? (like supporting)

anda

That is exactly how it is. In English it would be "Go Romania, Go!"

Manchester United is the greatest football team! Of course I'm from Manchester so I might be a bit biased! :) My family and I are all big fans of Manchester United. My mum went to matches with her brothers when she was just a little girl, and I used to go often with my friends before I came to Romania.

I must admit something now - if the England team had made it to Euro 2008 I would be supporting them! But they didn't qualify (which is pretty embarrassing since Manchester United just won the European Cup for individual teams!), and I am only too happy to be cheering on my adopted team. Even if England was in the competition, I would still cheer for Romania, but if England was playing against Romania, I'm afraid I would have to get my St George's flag out.

The matches are all being screened live on a big screen in the square near my apartment. I am thinking of watching the Holland-Romania match there tomorrow - much better atmosphere than alone in my apartment! I'm sure Romania is in with a chance since Holland have already qualified and might even rest some players.

While listening to the football commentary here, I am sure I have heard some 'Romanianised' English words. Am I right in thinking I heard 'dribbling-ul' and 'goluri' or something like that?

anda

You are right about "dribbling" and "goluri", there's also the "goalkeeper", "penalty", "corner", "fair play" and I'm sure there are more. It is much more comfortable to just say it in English and handy too, since the Romanian translation would not have the same impact.

I used to be a great fan of AC Milan, still am, but haven't seen a match in quite a while. If Romania hadn't qualified for Euro 2008 I would have supported Italy.

HAI ROMÂNIA!!!

I don't understand why you say that, what do you mean Romania will play against Spain soon?
De ce spui că România va juca împotriva Spaniei?

I heard a joke today. It's rather disparaging to the Romanian football team, so I'm not really sure if I dare post it here! But it was a Romanian who told it to me, so here goes:

Holland's football coach is trying to encourage his players about tonight's match. "Come on," he says, "I know we've already qualified and nobody feels like playing, but we've really got to put out some sort of team against Romania tonight or else it will be embarrassing."
All the players look at the floor and try to avoid catching the coach's eye. At length, Van der Saar, the goalkeeper, steps forward.
"Ok, ok," he says. "I'll do it. You guys all go out on the town and enjoy yourselves, and I'll go and play against Romania."
Gratefully, the other players leave Van der Saar at the stadium and head into town to sample the local nightlife. Five minutes after the match starts, the coach turns on a TV in the bar where the players are drinking. The score is 1-0 to Holland - Van der Saar has scored in the 4th minute.
Satisfied, he turns the TV off again, and relaxes with his his beer.
Nobody thinks about the match again until just after the final whistle has blown. Turning on the TV again, the team are shocked to discover that the final score was 1-1 with Mutu scoring for Romania in the 90th minute.
Shocked, the coach and all the players rush down to the stadium to meet Van der Saar.
"What happened?" shouts the coach, as Van der Saar emerges dejectedly from the changing room.
"I'm so sorry, coach," replies Van der Saar, hanging his head in shame, "I got myself sent off in the 6th minute!"

Well, made me chuckle anyway.

Basically, tonight's maths is as follows. If Italy and France draw, and Romania doesn't lose against Holland by more than two goals, then Romania will go through to the next stage!

Personally, I hope Romania can do better than that though. If Romania beats Holland, it doesn't matter what the other teams do!!

Hai România!!!!

Good joke:D I think this is coming from the fact that Romania has had such a tough time qualifying for the European and World Championships these past years.
It might be nice to make a good impression now.

HAI ROMÂNIA!!!

I saw the Romania vs Italy game a few days back. It was one of the best games I've ever seen, so many opportunities for both teams. Unfortunately today's game between Romania and Holland did not go so well. At least Romania put up a good fight in the group of death. Now I'm cheering for Spain.

Unfortunately Romania goes home. It seems like they weren't the same team. A lot of wrong passes, they didn't find themselves on the field. Doesn't matter, we'll do better in the World Cup!
But we can continue with the news from sport events, can't we?:)
