Jack London: COLŢ ALB: A friend sent me a zip file of Jack London's "White Fang" translated into Romanianwow!

Here is the first paragraph, followed by the same from the original English text:

-

CHAPTER 1: The Trail of the Meat

Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean toward each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadnessÔÇöa laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozenhearted Northland Wild.

Now here's the cool part: you can go here (from a link provided by Lina long ago) http://www.carteasonora.ro/v2/ , click on Literatura Clasica under CARTI AUDIO and find Colt Alb and by clicking on Asculta Sample beneath the cover image you can hear a nice sample of the text being read aloud in Romanian (some of the dialogue differs as it is dramatized rather than translated word by word).

Fun to listen to, and helpful as well.

(N.T.)} is not part of the text itself but is a sidebar-type note inserted as some kind of explanation (beyond my ability to understand completely).

Also if you listen carefully you will perceive that what is read does not match the Romanian translation exactly, I assume this is due to the fact that there is more than one way to say or write some of these things in the Ro.

When translating a text there are two options; one to translate it word by word and two, to translate WHAT the author is trying to say and not HOW.
And yes, there are many, many ways of saying the same thing in Romanian, it pretty much depends on what sounds better to the translator.
