Muzică Românească: This entire section is about music. Thanks to Lina for the idea by the way. :) In this thread we'll discuss all sorts of Romanian music contemporary and classical. I will introduce us all to famous Romanian artists and songs. I also will try to introduce traditional folk and holiday songs. I hope everyone will enjoy and participate here. Oh, and also I hope to put some MP3s here so that we can all listen and enjoy. :) So let's introduce the first musician and songs...

George Enescu (August 19,1881- May 4,1955)

George Enescu was a Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor, and music teacher. He was born in Liveni, Romania. He was considered a musical prodigy making his first musical composition at age 5. At seven he entered the Vienna Conservatory to study music. At sixteen he graduated winning a silver medal of honor in music. In 1895 he moved to Paris to continue his studies. He conducted many orchestras such as teh Philadelphia Orchestra in 1935 and the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris. In 1939 he married Maria Rosetti, the lifelong friend of future queen Marie of Romania. He lived in both Paris and Romania throughout his life but decided to stay in France after the Soviet Occupation of Romania after World War II. On his death in 1955 he was interred in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Enescu now has a palace and a muzeum in honor of his musical acheivements.

Enescu is most famous for his two Romanian Rhapsodies and his opera titled "Oedipe".

I must admit that I am not familiar with Enescu's work. At least by my being aware of who I was listening to. But his lifespan had some of my favorite composers. I believe he was born around the time of the death of (my favorite :) ) composer Franz Liszt. Also in there, although younger than Enescu, would be some of the great russian composers like Shostakovitch and Prokofiev. Both among my favorites.

I do look forward to hearing Enescu. Maybe I'll hunt the net for some today at work.

Dominick, how do you post an image file or an mp3 file onto the discuss? If it is too lengthy to describe, can you post a link pointing me to the instructions? Many thanks! :):)

No problem Mike, to post a picture you have to use an online picture storer (I suggest photobucket.com)and upload pictures to it. Then copy and paste the image code into the post. I hope I explained that well enough. :)

George Enescu isn't very well known I have to admit but he is a very good composer I have heard a few of his songs.
I think i'll post a contemporary artist now.

This one's for Danial :ha

O-Zone

O-Zone was a pop trio of three Moldavian singers. (I'm including them here because they speak Romanian there anyway) The three members Dan Bălan (aka Duke), Radu Sîrbu (aka Picasso), and Arsenie Todiraş (aka Arsenium) are most famous for there first single "Dragostea din tei", which reached number one on many European countries charts and third in England in 2003 and 2004. They followed up with another album "Despre Tine". Although they had great success in Europe O-Zone never became popular in the United States even though the "Numa Numa Dance" was one of the most recognizable songs among teens in 2003 and 2004. In 2005 the group split up and went on to their own seperate careers in music.

I had forgotten that I have an Enescu piece on my ipod. I did recognize the piece. Although I cannot find it now, I think it said it was his romanian rhapsody #11.

I found one on my ipod too probably the same one. ;)
The full title of it is "Romanian Rhapsody Op. 11 #1 in __"
I left a blank because I can't remember what key it's in.

Of course you can Avaldi! All songs, artists and Romanian music is welcome here for us all to enjoy.

Thanks Dominick, to be clear that I understand, when you add the html tags for the image, you are just referencing a web location? So technically, you could put an image location from any site within the same tags and it would display.

~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask about a romanian genre called manele. According to wikipedia, I get the impression that this style of music is disputedly, considered a type of counter-culture by some sections of society for various reasons such as poor grammer, questionable lyrics, etc. Possibly even a type of "group envy" on various levels between different portions of society or class. This has been my interpretation from what i have read.
I, personally, have heard two songs which I really enjoy. I thought the music is very passionate and the singing very beautiful although i havn't a clue as to what is being sung. I write this because i am very interested to read what other people think and know about manele. Both positive and negative hopefully.
Here are the 2 songs that I have heard:
1) Da-mi doamne mama inapoi by Florin Salam, Adrian Minune, Nicolae Guta and Costel Ciofu.
2) Am ajuns sa by Carmen Serban & Adrian Minune
Enescu şi alţi compozitori redau foarte bine prin muzica lor glasul romanesc.
În opera lui Enescu se găsesc foarte multe motive folclorice, inspirate din viaţa românului.
Creaţia sa abordează aproape toate formele şi genurile muzicale, redand dragostea pentru poporul român şi sensibilitatea acestuia.
Aici puteţi asculta cele două rapsodii minunate "Rapsodia Română nr.1" şi "Rapsodia Română nr. 2"
I have given this a shot. Although, I couldn't have done it without a dictionary.
Enescu and other composers represented very good music through Romanian sound.
In opera Enescu had to come across very many folkloric motives, inspired by Romanian life.
The creation to approach nearly every form and musical genre, [redand??] the love for the Romanian people and that sensibility.
Felicitări/Congratulation!
Through their music, Enescu and other composers represented very well Romanian sound(voice, tongue).
...inspired from Romanian live style.
Nu-mã, nu-mã iei, nu-mã, nu-mã, nu-mã iei
Hi
Its me, an outlaw
and please except my love happiness
Hello
I gave you a call
And I am tough
I ask nothing from you
You want to leave but
You can't, you can't take me
You can't take me
The image of you face
And the love of the linden tree
Remind me of your eyes
Am ceva ce sigur o să vă placă! Muzica lor şi textele sunt inspirate din folclorul românesc!
I have something you will definitely enjoy! Their music and lyrics are inspired by Romanian folk music.
Phoenix
Phoenix a reuşit pentru prima dată să realizeze o sinteză organică şi convingătoare între folclorul arhaic românesc şi muzica modernă. Gama modalităţilor de exprimare este enorm de largă, pornind de la formule de chitare electrice şi acustice, vioară şi instrumente de suflat, pînă la combinaţii de formula "rock"(chitare electrice, tobe , percuţie, bas) cu coruri şi orchestre simfonice.
Stilul se cristalizează, prelucrările de folclor sînt înlocuite de acum cu piese originale compuse în stilul acelei sinteze folclorice-rock ce caracterizează de acum repertoriul formaţiei. Colaborarea cu cei mai buni poeţi ai ţării îşi face şi ea efectul, calitatea textelor este excelentă, de altfel ca şi inconfundabilele compoziţii.
Următorul disc produs în 1972 se intitulează "Mugur de fluier", titlu cu o semnificaţie metaforică deosebită.
În iarna aceluiaşi an formaţia se retrage în munţi, unde rămine timp de trei luni, perioadă în care se pun bazele operei rock "Cantafabule", inspirat din semnificaţia mitologică a animalelor din fabule şi legende.
1974 are loc giganticul concert de la Sarmisegetuza Dacica, unde formaţia PHOENIX cîntă acompaniată de "Dubaşii din Brăneşti"
Their record made in 1972 is entitled “Mugur de fluier”, having a special metaphoric significance. The winter of the same year, the band moved to the mountains, were they remained for the next three months. During this time, a new rock piece was created “Cantafabule”, inspired from the mythological significance of animals in stories and legends.
In 1974, it was a gigantic concert in Sarmisegetuza Dacica, where the band sang along “Dubasii din Branesti”
Phoenix - Invocaţie
Text: Şerban Foarţă / Andrei Ujică; Recită: Florian Pitiş
Vouă, celor din hronici, pecetii şi herburi,
fiarelor nepăscătoare de ierburi,
nepăsătoare de carne de fiară, neumbrite de nour,
nearse de soare: Pajură, Bour,
cu schiptru şi tiară, -
mă rog, să vă iviţi!
Pre voi, fiare heralde:
alde Pardosu', alde
Irog-inorogu', vă rog, să vă iviţi!
Fiarelor de bună şi de rea priinţă,
pe cari vânătorul dac-o să le prindză,
n-o să mi-se-aleagă cu pleavă şi abure,
cu niscai sfarog: Fiarelor din fabule,
din eticeşti şi de zăbavă cărţi,
mă rog, să se ivească!
Vouă, cinstitelor, ţie, sperjure,
şarpe sân-pomului jur-împrejure,
fiarelor omului semiasemine:
alde Sirenei, celui Chentaur
cu gură de aur, ca a Hrisostomului,
mă rog, să se ivească!
Fiare cuminţi, cu-o mie de dinţi,
cu coadă de peşte, cu gheare la deşte,
cu unghie de ţap, cu cap, făr-de-cap,
cu blana ca sfecla, cu ochii ca stecla,
cu ochii de vâlc, fiare cu tâlc,
cu duhori suave, fiare filozoafe... Ave!
...A psevdofiarelor cânt viaţa-neviaţa
care nu se trece ca topită gheaţa,
nu se risipeşte în văzduh ca ceaţa,
nice nu se rumpe ca subţire aţa,
au se ovileşte ca bătrână faţa;
căci de zboară-mi zboară altfel decât raţa,
se ivesc pe lume nu din ou ca raţa,
nici nu-mi pasc fâneaţa-n toată dimineaţa,
ci-şi păstrează pururi harul şi verdeaţa,
taina şi dulceaţa,-
fiindcă nici viaţă nu le e viaţa!
Eu vă cânt şi vă descânt,
vă invoc şi vă evoc,
de noroc, de nenoroc,
Vasilisc şi Inorog,
Aspidă şi Zgripţor-Roc.
Eu vă agrăiesc, vă isc,
Inorog şi Vasilisc,
frate Dulf cu ochi de sulf,
dimpreună cu Adelfă,
soru-ta, eu v-aduc jertfă.
Şi tot eu îi ţin ison,
Păsării Calandrinon,
Păsării de da sau ba,
ca şi ţie, dumneata,
Scarabee, scara mea...
Eu vă cânt,
eu vă trec pragul,
eu vă strig la ceasul fix
şi tot eu vă uit de dragul
împăratului Finics!
Fie să renască numai cel ce har
are de-a renaşte, curăţit prin jar,
din cenuşa-i proprie şi din propriu-i scrum,
astăzi, ca şi mâine, pururi şi acum.
They were:
Rough Riders
Yorkshire Ballad
Tallis Prelude
Taccodata
Variations on Korean Folk Songs
Waltz of the Snowflakes
A fost un concert foarte frumos. "Waltz of the Snowflakes" was my favorite. I doubt anyone will know most of these songs because our director likes us to play little known songs. ;)
Da, ai dreptate, în afară de "Valsul fulgilor de nea" nu cred că am ascultat altceva.
În aprilie, ansamblul de balet din Moscova va interpreta "Lacul lebedelor". Va trebui să rezerv deja locuri dacă vreau să văd spectacolul!
I would be interested in this too. (Just no O-zone! :))
Kenny, If you haven't already, you might want to check out the poetry page for audio files on romanianvoice.com. I find them quite easy to follow along with while reading. On my spare time, I have been trying to memorize George Coşbucs poem "Noi Vrem Pământ". It is great practice since my singing is quite scary. (I think) I've really made great progress with rolling-of-the-R's which has been of no use to me until now and my pronunciations. One day I may even be corrected by a Romanian! ;)
George Bacovia Decembre
Te uită cum ninge decembre...
Spre geamuri, iubito, priveşte -
Mai spune s-aducă jăratec
Şi focul s-aud cum trosneşte.
Şi mână fotoliul spre sobă,
La horn să ascult vijelia,
Sau zilele mele - totuna -
Aş vrea să le-nvăţ simfonia.
Mai spune s-aducă şi ceaiul,
Şi vino şi tu mai aproape, -
Citeşte-mi ceva de la poluri,
Şi ningă... zăpada ne-ngroape.
Ce cald e aicea la tine,
Şi toate din casă mi-s sfinte, -
Te uită cum ninge decembre...
Nu râde... citeşte nainte.
E ziuă şi ce întuneric...
Mai spune s-aducă şi lampa -
Te uită, zăpada-i cât gardul,
Şi-a prins promoroacă şi clampa.
Eu nu mă mai duc azi acasă...
Potop e-napoi şi nainte,
Te uită cum ninge decembre...
Nu râde... citeşte nainte.
Kotle, it's absolutely great! How small is the world, isn't it?:)
Şi eu sunt fericită să găsesc lucruri în comun între două culturi diferite!
I'm also happy to find common things between two different cultures!
You can say : Sunt fericit că pot să împărtăşesc din cultura ţării mele cu tine!
I'll translate the lyrics in Romanian, of course:D
Ma bucur ca ati amintit de Phoenix. De fapt este vorba aici de fenomenul Phoenix pentru ca sunt de foarte multi ani impreuna si sunt ascultati de categorii de varste diferite, de la 60 la 15 sau poate mai putin.
Eu am fost la un concert Phoenix odata cu mama si stiam versurile la fel de bine amandoua.
I'm glad you mentioned Phoenix. In fact it's a whole Phoenix phenomena, because the band has been together for many years now and they have an audience that ranges from 60 years old to 15 or less.
I went to a Phoenix concert once with my mother and both of us knew the lyrics.
Yep Mike I remember from my Russian lessons that if I tried a different Slavic language (I even tried Macedonian Kotle) then I would have to learn the changes in the alphabet.
P.S. Kotle Macedonian is one of the nicest Slavic languages I ever tried to learn but there's pretty much no way for me to learn it. Plus I have no time to.
I've been using Romanian popular music & lyrics quite a bit in my quest to grasp the language, speaking it, hearing & understanding what is said, as well as reading it.
Here are two by child singer Cleopatra Stratan, which I am adding for their teaching & learning value (imo, desigur); simple words clearly expressed yet with useful doses of "wordplay" too (the translations were provided via email by a friend who is a native speaker and found them online)
Cleopatra Stratan: NUMAR PAN' LA UNU (I Count to One)
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Daca ma intelegi
IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME
Da` daca nu nu te-ntrista
BUT IF YOU DON'T, DON'T BE SAD
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-le-li
Daca stii sa numeri numara unu, doi, si..!
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO COUNT...SAY 1, 2 AND...
Cateodata seara stau pe spate
I LIE SOMETIMES AT NIGHT
Si ma uit in sus,
AND I LOOK ABOVE
Altii numara cate stele-s
OTHERS COUNT HOW MANY STARS ARE THERE
Da` eu cate nu-s
I COUNT HOW MANY THERE AREN'T
Nu -ncerca degeaba ca oricum nu reusesti
DON'T TRY IN VAIN, CAUSE ANYWAY YOU WON'T SUCCEED
Doar de numeri pana la unu fara sa te opresti
ONLY IF YOU COUNT TO 1 WITHOUT STOPPING
Nu conteaza care-i faza daca nu renunti
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU DO IF YOU DON'T GIVE UP
Important e sa tii minte ce trebu` sa uiti
IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER WHAT YOU HAVE TO FORGET
Eu as spune ce-i pe bune
I WOULD SAY WHAT IS RIGHT
Si ce nu-i perfect
AND WHAT ISN'T PERFECT
Dar ma tem ca o sa ma intelegeti corect
BUT I AM AFRAID YOU WILL GET ME RIGHT
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Daca ma intelegi
IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME
Da` daca nu nu te-ntrista
BUT IF YOU DON'T, DON'T BE SAD
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-le-li
Daca stii sa numeri numara unu, doi, si..!
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO COUNT...SAY 1, 2 AND...
Cine-ar vrea sa afle in ce zodie se afla racul,
WHO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT'S THE CANCER'S SIGN
Cum se-ajunge intr-o secunda in Cuba cu bacul
HOW YOU CAN GET TO CUBA IN ONE MINUTE WITH A FERRYBOAT
Si cu ce viteza-ar trebui sa ne oprim,
WITH WHAT SPEED SHOULD WE STOP
Care-i antonimul la cuvantul sinonim.
WHAT'S THE ANTONYM OF THE WORD SYNONYM
Ori mai bine-ar fi sa afli cum e cand e bine,
OR IT WOULD BE BETTER TO KNOW HOW IT'S TO BE WELL
Daca nu gasesti raspuns ,il gasesti la mine
IF YOU DON'T FIND AN ANSWER, ASK ME
Pentru ca deja sunt mica si am inteles
BECAUSE I AM ALREADY LITTLE AND I'VE UNDERSTOOD
La ce varst-am implinit trei ani.
AT WHAT AGE I'VE TURNED 3 (YEARS OLD)
Mama,ce succes !
WOW, WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT!
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Daca ma intelegi
IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME
Da` daca nu nu te-ntrista
BUT IF YOU DON'T, DON'T BE SAD
Hop sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-le-li
Daca stii sa numeri numara unu, doi, si..!
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO COUNT...SAY 1, 2 AND...
Cleopatra Stratan: NOAPTE BUNA (Good Night)
Cum se lasa noaptea-n casa
WHEN NIGHT COMES
Somnul vine la copii
SLEEP COMES TO CHILDREN
Sa ne spuna "Noapte buna"
TO TELL THEM "GOOD NIGHT"
Si povesti la jucarii
AND TO TELL STORIES TO THEIR TOYS
In casuta prea micutza
IN THE LITTLE HOUSE
Stau piticii neclintiti
DWARFS STAY STILL
Unde zana ii da mana
WHERE THE FAIRY GIVES HER HAND
Printului si toti sunt fericiti... x3
TO THE PRINCE AND EVERYBODY'S HAPPY
Iar din ceruri te cununa
AND FROM THE SKY
Luna plina de mister
THE FULL MOON WEDS YOU
Unde stele se aduna
WHERE STARS GATHER
Fara numar sus pe cer
COUNTLESS IN THE SKY
In hainutza-i de vapaie
IN HER TINY COAT
Si frumoasa ca un vis
BEAUTIFUL LIKE A DREAM
Ne patrunde in odaie
SHE GETS IN OUR ROOM
Chiar de geamul nu mai e deschis... x3
EVEN IF THE WINDOW ISN'T OPEN ANYMORE
Iar dimneatza prinde viata
AND IN THE MORNING SHE COMES TO LIFE
A povestilor e roz
THE PINK LIFE OF FAIRY TALES
Sta in soapta si ne-asteapta
SHE WAITS QUIETLY
Sa se joace , iar cu noi
TO PLAY WITH US AGAIN
Fiecare jucarie
EVERY TOY
Universul ei intreg
HER WHOLE UNIVERSE
Are suflet si e vie
HAS A SOUL AND IT'S ALIVE
Numai cei maturi nu ïnteleg... (3 times)
ONLY GROWN-UPS DON'T UNDERSTAND...
Are you the Daniela that someone said in the comments was at this performance?
These are italian opera, correct?
This is outstanding. I must admit, that I haven't had much experience with opera. I have always wanted to see it live. I could never listen to it on a CD. For me, I would have to see it live or on TV.
Thanks for sharing it :)
Thanks Daniela,
I love opera but these clips are a little odd. They're singing right next to the orchestra! Hmm, Does the opera house in Bucharest have entire opera's acted out? I even recognized some of the songs. I have to say though my favorite opera song is La Donna è Mobile from Verdi's Rigoletto. It's nice to know that opera still survives in Romania hopefully I can go see one in Bucharest someday.
It is a normal position for the orchestra pit, a bit lower than the stage.They are under the stage and in front of it but under.
You can see that they have a very busy calendar for next year
Anyone familiar with Vita de vie? Particularly their song Lasat Pustiu. This is an unbelievable song. From what I understand, this band isn't all that known in Romania. I believe this song would be huge in America with the right marketers. They might have to sing in English to suit the audience, but they wouldn't be the first to do that. It makes me want to go to Romania as slap them around a little bit. This single song could make millions easily for them. Unless they like the obscurity, which is fine.
The music is literally outstanding. Nice clean channel guitar followed by a heavy palm-muted crunch distortion guitar. Plus they employ one of my favorite beats. A "2 against 3" rhythm pattern between the drums and the guitar. I have never heard this done in modern rock before and was very impressed/pleased that they used it. Adding character to the song.
I can't stop listening. My iTunes says that I have listened to this song 600+ times over the past 3 weeks or so. (I have a playlist with only 4 songs in it :D) It can be found on youtube. Keyword: Lasat Pustiu. So go check it out now! :)
I think you missunderstood a bit. Whomever you were talking to about the band couldn't have said that the band was obscure, but the song you mentioned.
Vița de Vie is a famous and appreciated band in Romania.
I'm quite impressed with your musical knowledge, but you have been a piano teacher, so that's understandable.
Anda, as always I thank you for your corrections. It doesn't surprise me that I misunderstood. Because vita de vie is an outstanding band and certainly would stand out.
