Salut?ri,

Lina

Da, nu este chiar u?or s? vorbe?ti despre tine. Mai degrab? a? vorbi despre ceea ce-mi place s? fac, ?i încep cu muzica.

Toate cele bune!

Bunâ ?i bine v-am reg?sit! Trebuie s? recunosc c? mi-a fost dor de PB ?i pe aceast? cale vreau s? urez bun venit noilor membri. Felicit?ri Javi pentru ini?iativa topicului!

Servus: Eu sunt Scott. Just starting. Native engleza. I have a smattering of Native American, Finnish , Italian, German, Dane & French. I am starting to pickup Spanish by daily contact. I would like to see Romania someday (yes, I want to see Bran castle, and the Danube delta, chase wolves in the Carpathian mountains, tell a woman how frumos she is..)

Mul?umesc for providing such a rich base of resources to help!

Bun? Scott,

Bine ai venit! I'm glad that you find all these resources as being helpful!
The places you have mentioned are very beautiful and special! About the wolves of Carpathians, you really want to chase them? If you find them:)
Not long time ago, one of our members had an excellent idea to talk about Romania, about the beautiful places which can be seen in pictures. I hope that she hasn't change her mind!

Salut!: Salut Lina!

Ce mai faci? I'm having to parrot for a few more hours. Can you point me to the ALT+{number} for the characters or what XP/FireFox settings I need to form the characters with the correct diacriticals/accents?

I should say a avea lup, nu prinde? (When I can't pluralize wolf or find it in a dictionary...this will take longer than I though) I just want to see them, not catch them. We have them back home (the UP of Michigan) - they are frumos! - and we have munte leu (lions)which I fear running into far more.

I ordered the CD you linked to and I saw last week. I want to make sure I get an acceptable accent and pronunciation. The Diseara link is very handy. I can see many phrases for each word. Right now it can make me even more confused, but I will keep picking up phrases and build vocabulary while I learn the grammar and usage. I expect that it will take years, but then I don't plan on visiting there for several years anyway!

Next step - sticky notes! I tag everything (except meu doua piscii (?) My two cats) in the apartment with the foreign name and add phrases using it as I go. Sounds silly (and messy), but I find it works quickly for me.

Imi pare rau, (w/o diacriticals) I get too long here.

Multumesc for your examples! The to be/to have finally sunk in. I'm going back through the sticky topics to see what else I can get to stick tonight.

Buna Ziua!
Scotty

Sunt bine, mul?umesc / I'm fine, thank you!

If you use Windows XP, to add Romanian in the language bar, try the following path :

Start Control Panel/Date,Time,Languages and Regional setup/Add other Languages/Details/Romanian/Apply

This should work!

You will notice the following changes on the keyboard for the special Romanian characters :

[ = ?
] = î
\ = â
; = ?
' = ?

I hope it works!

As I see, you are very determined to learn Romanian:)

Succes / Success!

Mulţumesc!: Salut Lina!

That did the trick after I played with it a bit and restarted.

I was intrigued as boy studying Vlad Tepe?. (Now I can spell it like I know it is spoken - history/legend notwithstanding) My nepotat? spend a var? with "Habitat for Humanity" there. I've never been to Europe, but if/when I do go to visit, I want to be respectful and learn as much of the local languages and customs as possible.

I know that most people there speak English/multilingual, but I think it is more respectful, enjoyable, and sometimes even safer to speak the local limb?.

Again, Mul?umesc for the help (and warm welcome!)

I'm off to the "games", they are a great help!

Bun? Ziua!

Salut,

I am pleased to meet you all.

My name is Mike I live in Pennsylvania USA. It is a long way from Romania though it does sound like Transylvania! :) I have the (ahem!:P) great fortune to sit in a bus for 4 hours a day commuting back and forth to work in NYC to analyze software. So, I make the best of the time and among other things enjoy the study languages. After learning the russian alphabet i became discouraged at my horrific pronunciation and long words. Decided to take a break from that and move onto the beautiful language of Romania. Though still a newbie, i have the time and dicipline to take it serious and hope to become proficient.

Similar to scotty, I too have aspirations of visiting romania. Since i was a kid, through reading, I became fascinated with romanian culture and history. The story of the Romanian Revolution is one of my favorites.

Btw, Scotty, if i may correct you, i believe it is pronounced ?epe?. Also Bram castle is a beautiful castle which i will visit someday, but it is actually Pieonari (incorrect spelling) Castle that was actually Vlads castle. Which is a unfortunately a ruin these days. Though i would still visit it. You didn't say it was and may already know this, so in case you didn't. :)

Sorry, i'll stop here. I can talk all day. :( I'll end with saying that I have been looking for a site like this for a while and I am glad to have stumbled across phrasebase. I look forward to meeting new people and learning the romanian language.

La revedere

Thanks kenny! It's'okay about the commute. I choose to do it. :)

I love the russian language and havn't given up on it. I just dont feel like working that hard at it. I try to visit gazete.ru from time to time to practise the letters.

What part of pennsylvania do you have family?

Near Pittsburgh. And once you read the Russian Alphabet a lot like I have it's as easy as reading English. ;)

Tuesday 20th of November 2007 05:05:05 AM
Ahh pittsburg. Never been there. I'm not far for the new jersey border.

I don't doubt that russian is an easily read language. A good vocabulary and being familiar with the root and word ending changes certainly are the advantage to reading.

Mul?umesc Lina ?i Mike pentru cuvântele voastre prietenoase.

Thank you Lina and Mike for your friendly words.

Am venit in România în 2001 pentru primul timp, ?i reveneam în fiecare vara de atunci în coace. Acum, locuiesc aici.

I came to Romania in 2001 for the first time, and have returned every summer since then. Now, I live here.

I work for a foundation here, with abandoned children. When it is time to leave the orphanage, we help them to find work, or courses for continuing their studies. It's hard for them to live independently when nobody helps them. They are very vulnerable.

Lucr?m cu dou? orfelinate în Ia?i. Avem cluburi copiilor (limb? engleza, arte manuale, informatics (??), ?i mai mul? a?a). Avem tabere în vara. Avem ?i cursuri de abilit??i, consultan?? legal? ?i îndrumare profesional?, ?i consiliere.

We work with two orphanages in Iasi. We have children's clubs (English language, arts and crafts, computing, and more like that). We have camps in the summer. We also have life-skills courses, legal and careers advice and a counselling service.

Also, not to change the subject... But what is on the plate that I see in your icon?

Isn't that cheese and polenta? Mamaliga cu branza?

becky
Saturday 31st of May 2008 03:00:10 AM
Ha ha yes, it's mamaliga cu brânza. It's a joke really because it's the one Romanian food that I've tried that I really don't like. Mamaliga I can eat to be polite, but the salty cheese I really can't manage!

The foundation I work for is called Shelter of Care (www.shelterofcare.com). That's its English name. It was started by Romanians but is financed from Britain and the US, hence the English name. I work as a volunteer, partially financed by letting out my home in the UK, although that money doesn't go as far as you might think. The cost of living in Romania is higher than many people realise. The rest of my finance comes from private individuals and from my church in the UK.

Kenny, I too remember TV images of orphanages in Romania many years ago. Thankfully, things are very different here now. The two orphanages I work in are very clean and the children are looked after, and given many more opportunities. Still, it is not the same as a family, and although the adults that work there do care for the children, there are too many children and not enough carers for them all. Some of the young people I work with live in apartments with a few youngsters and a live-in 'mother'. This seems to me to be a much better environment for them.

Salut!: Hi
My name is Gareth, I am an English guy currently living the beautiful city of Sibiu. I came here to work about 18 months ago and met a beautiful Romanian girl called Oana and we are getting married in 6 weeks time. We plan to stay in Romania and raise a family here. Even though I have been here a while my Romanian is pretty poor, this is mainly due to my extreme laziness and partially down to the fact that everyone in Sibiu under 40 speaks pretty good English.
I have now started taking formal Romanian lessons and I am trying to speak Romanian as much as possible with Oana and at work, I really need tips on learning a foreign language (I have not learned one before, you know what us English are like) obviously Romanian is very different to English and I am finding it very hard to be honest.
Hope you can help and I look forward to talking with you all

Bun? Gareth,

Welcome to Phrasebase and congratulations on your wedding! Everyone here is very friendly and helpful with your quest to learn Romanian. I am sure you will find what you need to accompany your formal lessons but if you have a question, feel free to ask. :)

May I ask what it is you do for a living?

Buna Mike
I am a Project Manager, the company I work for now is an American company so my lack of Romanian is not such an issue because I spend most of my time talking with engineers in the US and in the UK, the company also has a strict policy of only employing people who speak English, I am a resident of Romania so I get paid on the same salary as a Romanian which was a bit of a shock after living in Romania on an English salary.

Bun? Gareth, bine ai venit!

I think you are going to improve your skills easily considering the fact that everywhere around you people speak Romanian.
Would you like to share your opinion about the Romanian forum? I'm sure that a new member can see better what we are missing.

Mult succes:)

Bun? Mike, mul?umesc!

I hope I could last longer this time :D, last time I tried to start learning Romanian, it lasted for like a week, but then due to lack of resources and people to practice with, I left it and focused on other things, but this time around, it seems like the community has grown and is quite active too, great job everyone! ;)

I've once been in România, in October. And I really loved the way you speaked and now I'm here trying to learn Romanian as much as I can. The place where I spent my week, was called Boto?ani, a city in northeast corner of Romania. I belong in an international school project (5 countries are involved: Romania, Bulgaria, Spain, Turkey and Finland). In February students from these countries are coming to Finland and I'm hosting 1 Romanian girl and 1 Spanish girl.

My Romanian level is still close to 0, but I think it is raising towards the sky and is already almost 1. Good job, Romanian forum is the most active forum in PB :)

Hello, my name is Paul. I am 38 years old from Scotland. I am trying to learn to speak Romanian but I am slow.

This is my first attempt at learning a new language and although I am finding it very difficult (especially the grammar) I am enjoying it.

I've been visiting this forum for a while now, trying some of the games on my own and finally got the courage to register and post my very limited Romanian. Hopefully I will be an active member of this community and be able to contribute in some way.

Bun venit Paul!

Welcome to the forum! I hope you enjoy the forum. :)

"Bun?, m? numesc Paul. Am 38 ani ?i sunt din Sco?ia. Încerc s? înv?? limb? român? dar sunt lent."

A good first attempt better than mine was. I believe this is the correct version of your sentence. Don't worry about the mistakes they weren't that bad.

- To say age use a avea - to have. For example "Eu sunt Kenny. Am 16 ani."
- Sunt not sînt is the correct form for "I am".
- Mic means small, lent means slow.
- I'm not sure but I don't think you can have two s? + verb's in a row.

I suggest you use http://www.dictionare.com/english/dictionary.htm

There you can look up words and conjugate verbs, etc. It is a really handy resource. Keep at it!

Kenny

Hi Mike111

Thanks for your welcome!

In Romania we have visited Brasov, Bran and the casttle, Sighisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Sibiu and then Bucurestii.

Next year we will try to see Danube's delta and the "mer Noire".

If we have the time we will try to see again Elena which lived in Sighisoara.

What have you seen since your trip?

It sounds like u had a nice trip. I saw some of the same things. Next time I hope to include Cluj, Timi?oara, Ia?i, and Bistri?a-N?s?ud for starters. And I would like to spend more time in Bucure?ti. I kept my trip mainly south of Sibiu with the exception of sighi?oara.

I was in Sighi?oara, Bucure?ti, Bra?ov (and Bra?ov-poiana), Hunedoara (Ca?telul Corvinilor), Tîrgovi?te, Sinaia (Ca?telul Pele? ?i Pele?or), Bran (Ca?tel), Iefori Nord and Constan?a (Marea Neagra) and Sibiu. Hopefully that is all of them. I saw much more traveling.

What is your favorite place that you visited?

Btw, your english was good. Only one correction:

What have you seen since your trip?

>> "since" makes the sentence mean that you are asking what I have seen between the time I left Romania to now.

Here are some suggestions:
- What have you seen on your trip?
- What did you see during your trip?

Hi Mike!

How many time did you went in Romania? We have spent only two small weeks, that's why we surrely go back next year.

Our prefered place was Brasov and Sighisoara (I would like to thanks Elena which has received us so nicely).

What's your prefered place?

We have met so friendly people in Romania and we would like to see them again.

Thank you so much for my english! (^^) But what does mean : btw?
