Share ideas, ask what you need: Sharing our ideas can be useful in helping us to find new, better and more relevant topics.
To ask what you need, I think would be a good start in order to learn romanian.

Let me be the first to share an idea. I think that we need a thread with everyday expressions, ordered in categories. Everyone can add, ask, discuss about them.
Later on, I can select and add the most useful expressions in the Phrasebase Database.

My first request is that you start asking for what you need to learn romanian.

What do you think about it?

Well, I'm not learning Romanian at the moment, (well not yet probably :p) but great ideas! :D Especially the adding/discussion part. ;) I'm not sure if the admins of the other languages have done that but, haha... but I just had to say, lovely idea you have there. :D

Keep up the great work, :)

Hi Danial,

Who knows, maybe one day you will want to learn Romanian! I'm glad you like what we are doing here, so you are welcome to discuss with us any issues you think are interesting or worth debating.

Thanks,
Lina

Oh, but Lina, I need so much!

The Everyday Expressions idea sounds good, is that what the Conversational Guide is supposed to be? Would we be able to ask about how to translate everyday English expressionsparticularly the underlying concepts that make them work from a syntactical and/or grammatical povinto Romanian?

My primary needs right now are getting a good grasp on correct pronunciation of Romanian words as well as a feel for how the language 'flows' in everyday usage, especially colloquial usages; and some idea of how to quickly get beyond simple 'literal' sentence & conversational constructions in order to convey overtones of meaning and richer subtext than handbook exercises ever convey.

Would a thread providing excerpts from Romanian newspapers and/or perhaps best-selling novels or well-known (or even less well-known) poems fill the bill? Just a thought. Or two... ;)

Share ideas: Lina, This sounds very exciting and could be just what I'm looking for . I shall 'watch this space' with great interest. I have only recently started to learn (or TRY to learn some romanian)and find short sentences WITH translations the most useful. Toate cele bine !

zeering, really, you have a lot of demands! I think I'll change the thread's title:)

Yes, this is the meaning of the thread "Conversational Guide" and yes, you can ask for translations of everyday English expressions.
Underlying concepts that you have mentioned, I think is making the learning process more complicated. The grammar issues should be followed in the grammar section or in the thread “Questions & Answers”.

We'll have a thread with Romanian writing and pronunciation. Getting correct pronunciation and to feel the language "flows" requires auditions!!!
The Phrasebase audio file is not available yet.

I think the idea with the excerpts from Romanian newspaper, novels or poems, is a good one. Beyond the translations, the students can write in their own words the message of the texts.
You can start a new thread with this topic!

Share ideas help us to find new ways to make the learning process easier, practical and pleasant.

paul33, I suggest you to post short sentences, in order to be translating, in the thread "Translations for beginners".

I will develop the thread "Conversational Guide" with new categories. If your need to be translated sentences fits to one of the categories, you can add them there.

Toate cele bune:)

lol, I knooooow!

But seriously, I have been trying very hard. It's just so difficult to find places where you can hear Romanian being spoken properly in a way that a beginner like me can assimilate it.

I listen at http://www.tvr.ro/ everyday, but the words go by so fast! I was thrilled the first time I recognized something there: dimineaţă. Yayyyyyyyyyy! Now if only I can find a place where transcripts of some of these news features are available...wow. I am looking.

And of course I look at the online versions of some Romanian newspapers, too. Some progress is being made, but not as quickly as I would like.

I have been using a beginning Pimsleur course, what it teaches I think I know fairly well nowinteleg putin Romaneste, niste Romanestebut it is limited for use in other contexts.

I can find many Romanian poems translated into English online but not the same poems in the original language for comparison. But I am still searching.

So, Lina, perhaps I come across as "demanding" when in fact it is actually great eagerness coupled with a zealous impatience to learn more, faster, that you are hearing in some of my statements above.

:)

You have given me many ideas for some new, productive threads, however, and I will be working to tailor them for constructive use by everyone here at the forum.

Multumesc foarte mult!

\"once upon a time\" \"I have ever heard or seen\":
Starting from these beautiful expressions, "once upon a time/a fost odată ca niciodată" (SweetKisser) and "I have ever heard or seen/am auzit sau văzut vreodată" (Dominick_Korshanyenko), I came up with this idea.

What if we open a new thread with most beautiful expressions, sayings or words from your native language?

In Romanian these expressions sound very well:)like in English, otherwise!

I have a request Lina. :) If possible can you do a lesson on possesive pronouns and adverbs? Thank you,

Kenny

Lina
Monday 08th of October 2007 10:19:48 PM

The lessons you have mentioned will be posted soon. I have a plan and I'd like to know your opinion about it. Thanks!

The lessons will have the following order :

1. The adjective
2. The demonstrative and possesive pronouns
3. The verb
4. The adverb

Do you think it is necessary a lesson about the numeral?

Dominick_Korshanyenko
Tuesday 09th of October 2007 01:46:02 AM
I think that those are great ideas for lessons and I can't wait until they're done. :)

When you say numerals do you mean numbers? If so, then yes every language has a different way of expressing numbers.

Thanks,

Kenny

Lina
Sunday 21st of October 2007 09:00:13 PM

Well, we'll have a lesson with the numerals, as well:)

Now, I want to tell you about a new thread. It's about Database translation. If you check the section "words" and "phrases", you'll see many words which are not translated. I'm behind with this work!
So, I will post words to be translated, and you and other member(if they are willing to do it) could translate them.
If we find words which are not yet in Database I can add them later on. Anyhow, I must to do that, with or without help!
It isn't so interesting and pleasent, but is very important to have the database updated!
By doing this, all of you can improve your vocabulary;)

Dominick, what is your opinion about that? What do you think if we 'll use your thread "Romanian vocabulary" for all these words?

Thanks,

Lina

I think a new thread would work better for a phrase book I am still yet to make Romanian Vocabulary 2. The "Romanian Vocabulary" posts are really meant to be basic lists based off of other posts for beginners like me.

Pronoun Help: Salut!

I could use a primer on the use of pronouns. I've got the nominative case (eu,tu,el,ea, ect) I guess they aren't even used much. But I could use some simple, clear examples of how to use the accusative, dative, genitive, and reflexive forms - both stressed and unstressed - of the pronouns and when to use them.

I've found a 183 page Romanian grammar PDF, but it is a bit high-level for me to absorb easily. I don't even remember my own grammar! I'm still trying to get used to no "it" or "the".

Mulţumesc and Bună Ziua!

First can you make a link to this grammar PDF I'd really like to see it. Also Romanian does have "the" but it is added onto the word ;).

Here you go!: It was from a link on the bottom of this wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_grammar
http://www.seelrc.org:8080/grammar/pdf/stand_alone_romanian.pdf

I found myself having to go out and study actual grammar for many of the terms. I have a English friend who is a Linguist, so I have a better idea of some of what he knows!

I can only get a bit into it before my brain glazes over...
I liked the intro information though!

I found in an old English book a comparative situation regarding the usages of Romanian and English articles. I'll post it in the article lesson. Maybe it helps!

Lina
Sunday 28th of October 2007 08:09:04 PM

Starting from your requests about article, pronoun, possesive and Romanian cases, it was easier for me to find ideas about how the next lessons will be structured! Thanks:)
First of all, I think it is better to see one of the most difficult grammar issue - Romanian Possesive.
We cannot talk about cases, specially the Genitive, before the possesive understanding!
So, I will express both, possesive article and possesive pronoun in the same time. Then, I can highlight the forms taken by these grammar categories in all cases.

Lina and I have partially discussed in another thread a way to help attract other romanian natives as well as romanian language students like myself to this site.

One of the ideas i think we need is advertisement. Since our only means of advertising is within the scope of this community, why don't we create a new thread called something that is direct to the point. "Help Wanted: Natives and Students Needed" or something to that effect. While in the body we can elaborate a bit about the community with the hopes to encourage both sides of the classroom.

Another idea I have is education on romania from a non-grammatical point of view. I propose creating possibly several thread(s): discuss 1) romanian history, culture and people. 2) Images taken from around the internet (or personally) or romanian cities, towns, landscapes, etc. And 3) It would be interesting for both natives and foreigners to be able to share some of their own lifes experiences, stories and culture from different walks of life.

The point I am trying to accomplish here is that learning a language is difficult. It takes an enormous commitment and time from both sides and keeping people interested in Romania/Romanian will keep them excited about learning the language. I think it would do the same for natives.

I find this true with myself. Personally, before i found PB, reading a bit about romanian history or listening to romanian music was all I needed to become motivated and get right back into it.

Wow! I'll stop here.

What do you think? I look forward to any comments.

Lina

Interesting points!

I. There is no doubt we need advertising. There are two possibilities:

1. We need to attract members within Phrasebase, those who want to learn Romanian or are native Romanians.

We can achieve this by announcements:

"We look for students who are able to ..."

or an announcement like:

"Who would like to create games? (I recommend Dominick - I am grateful for his games)

or "We need a native Romanian who is able to translate..."

My opinion is that those who want to learn Romanian must be encouraged to write in English as well. Surely, we need someone to translate. This way dialogues, questions and answers will arise.

2. We should promote Phrasebase on the outside, to our friends (we can initiate a competition - we can find ways to reward that person, we must think about this).

II. I think we have now the basic grammar (we only need a few more elements).

I don't understand how the topics may be viewed by many users and there is nothing to comment, ask or suggest!

Surely, we haven't an amazing forum; this is the main reason why I initiated the subject - "share ideas, ask what you need".
Having ideas and sharing them with the others, we can build up a remarkable forum.

III. It would be great if we could find new topics. Those mentioned by you are very attractive. I would like to have all those topics on the forum, but there is nobody to write them.
You are right, we need topics related to history, people, customs, funny stories, personal experiences.
Therefore, we need all those that can and will share to others their knowledges.

We should put into practice your idea. What do you think about a topic related to Christmas traditions and a topic about our native language?

Thank you for your initiative. You only have to keep on! Certainly you'll have my support!

Lina

Hi Lina,

I think we are on the right track here. Please tell me what to do.

A couple questions:

1. When you refer to "We can achieve this by announcements", is that the same thing a posting a "new topic" in the forum or something else? (I am still new here, forgive my ignorance)

2. "My opinion is that those who want to learn Romanian must be encouraged to write in English as well. Surely, we need someone to translate. This way dialogues, questions and answers will arise."

Do I understand you correctly.... we write in english, someone translates it to romanian, then we discuss! What a great idea! Perhaps we can post a picture of something and write a short paragraph describing it.

3. "I don't understand how the topics may be viewed by many users and there is nothing to comment, ask or suggest!"

Which topics are you referring to? We definitely would need to post a topic that ppl will have something to comment on. Otherwise it would be futile. I would be more than happy to write some. We could't copy and paste an entire entry from wikipedia. That would discourage I think. But a few paragraphs on a certain topic and then a statement encourage discussion.

~~

I think the two topics you mention would be great.

Also, Dominicks games are great! I enjoy playing all of them.

Hello Lina/Mike,

Sorry I haven't been on for a while but I've been really busy! In the past couple of weeks I went to three concerts, a parade, a couple meetings at school, soccer practices, the doctor, and in between all of that I had a lot of homework and had to practice my saxophone to be in a concert yesterday. :) But I'm finally back. I like all of the suggestions here. I would like to help with all of this and you two have thought of a lot while I was gone. :)

A couple of things I plan to do soon:

1. Post Romanian Game 5 (it's gonna be good)

2. Help you advertise.

3. Become less busy :ha

Hey guys :)

I was just reading this thread and just wanted to suggest what most of the other language fora have been doing. It's practically the same thing. It's creating a thread for "Romanian Music" :D where you could post music videos from youtube or anywhere else for that matter, along with lyrics below. And for those who want to learn more could try and translate the lyrics yourself to English or your native language. Sad, the only Romanian song I know is "Dragosta din tei" by O-zone :p hehe

Hope this helps,
Danial

Lina
Tuesday 11th of December 2007 02:54:11 AM

Hi Mike, as you can see we are not alone here:)

1. Actually there is a new topic which is outlined as an announcement. I have this option; this way it will be maintained on the first page as "announcement"

2. The common language is English. We must understand each other somehow, don't we? It would be better to write in English and afterwards translate, than not write at all.

What if Avaldi wrote his dialogue in Spanish? This way, a Romanian that learns Spanish would be more interested.
A new topic where "each spoke his own language""fiecare vorbeste pe limba lui" - a Romanian expression.

Romanians have a predilection for foreign languages. It’s a phenomenon. Most of them speak English, French, German, Italian. Spanish is extremely fashionable nowadays.

As you said, the interest must be to the both sides. Everyone has a reason. Why Phrasebase?

3. Related to views, try to find the balance between views and replies. I mean every topic. You can take a look at the Romanian page where all the topics are displayed - “views/replies”

For example:
Dominick’s game “Romanian Game 1” – 705 views/57 replies, in just 2 months;
Share ideas - 678/29
Introduce yourself - 398/15
Gender of the noon - 509/9
Jokes - 142/6
Discover Romania - 939/42
Song - 1636/18
Practice the gender of the noun - 474/17
Find synonyms - 2090/13!

How do we explain this? Is there only one answer - isn’t there any topic of interest for our members?
Well, in this case it would probably be best if we deleted all the topics. If we only watch and stay behind the line, what is the point?

Dominick have created a game for every new grammar lesson. But this didn’t show any results either.

There could also be other causes :

* Most of members are autodidacts. They learn by themselves and don’t need the forum. They are satisfied that they have the learning material and stay behind the line.

* They don’t have the courage to write in Romanian. They neither write in English, so they wait.

* Those that don’t know English so well. And I can understand them. Who likes to make mistakes and be seen by others? Especially since it is assumed that here everyone knows English!

If you want, we can launch a poll to see how we rank on these categories. By having the option of remaining anonymous, each will say where he is positioned. I don’t know if it helps, but it could be interesting, in order to understand where we are and to know what we have to do.

For example, if required, we can determine:

-how many Romanian are members
-how many members want to learn Romanian
-what is the ranking of Romanian language on this site (I know that it is among the favorites)
-who is an active member (native or Romanian students), when was his last post?

4. As you can see, zeering have already posted a new thread about Christmas!

It would be interesting to know how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world. We can vote the most interesting, funny, beautiful tradition.

The next subject - "My native language - a story" (the history of the language, foreign influences, language and culture, dialects)

Your idea with the image and a short presentation is excellent. We aren’t writers or historians:)

It would be great to have a thread “Romanian café” – like on the English forum. I spoke with Alina about this subject. Or we can go back to Spilka’s topic "A place to talk".

I hope, finally, the comments will appear. This time I’m going to watch the views of this thread!

Wow Lina that was a huge post. :) It's filled with good ideas too. I am cooking up two games right now so be prepared.

*I think a Music section would be great I'd be happy to get started on that too.

** It is true that there are many people who are too shy to try to use a foreign language. But I try to just guess and just use the language if I make a mistake hopefully I will learn something and never make that mistake again. So everyone out there don't be shy!

*** :ha "Dominick a game is needed"

I must ask you to think about methods to promote the site, mainly the Romanian page. How should announcements look like? What are we actually looking for?

So that, we enjoy the friendship of two musicians! I admire people who play an instrument, have voice and music is part of their live. Myself, I can only listen to music:(
I love music, and I think of it as "one of world’s miracles"!

Lina, music sounds soooo much better when you play an instrument! It is never too late to learn :)

While thinking about ways to promote the site, I began to think about how it was that I came across phrasebase. We need to be able to GOOGLE IT!

For months, I searched on google for things like "Learn Romanian", "Romanian nouns", "Romanian Lanugage", etc. All of which, did not return anything related to PhraseBase within the first few pages. As my Romanian phrases and vocabulary grew, I began Google-ing for different Romanian words/phrases and finally, I found reference to one of the entries on the forum.

So I ran two tests... I searched for the title of one of Dominick's games and a part of one of the posts. It appeared in the first page results. (First result actually).

In our announcement page, I suggest including certain "keywords" that would target the random Google search.

I can write some suggestions for the announcement at a later time. I am at work right now.

Lina
Wednesday 19th of December 2007 01:42:55 AM

Salut Mike, interesting observation!

What words, in your opinion, can make Google search engine to target Phrasebase much faster? Maybe it is necessary to change or to add keywords in Head or Title. I can send a message to Phrasebase staff if in this way we can promote the site more efficiently.

Care cuvânt crezi că ar face motorul de căutare Google să localizaze Phrasebase mai repede? Poate ar fi necesar să schimbăm ceva sau sa adaugam cuvinte cheie în header sau in title. Pot transmite acest lucru dacă astfel promovam site-ul mai eficient!

The announcement for the Romanian page, should attract the native Romanians to create, for example, those two threads we thought about or anything else which could help us :

The origins of Romanian language - foreign influences
The literary cafe - a place to talk

We must find something to attract those who are willing to share their knowledge

Pentru pagina românească, anunţurile ar trebui să atragă nativi români să creeze de exemplu cele două posturi noi la care ne-am gândit, sau orice altceva ce ne-ar ajuta :

Originea limbii române - influenţe străine
Cafeneaua literară - loc de discuţii

Trebuie să găsim ceva care să atragă pe cei doritori să împărtăşească din cunostinţele pe care le au.

I'm expecting your announcements, I'm just going to translate them;)

I would like to play guitar:)

"Learn Romanian" might be a little too scarce. But it still might make it to page 1 or page 2 on google. I'll suggest to write a paragraph or two on what we have here. Keeping it simple to target different types of google searches. I will write it sometime this week.

I will be happy to write the announcement, but how do I enter it as an 'announcement'.

Guitar is a fun instrument. I wish I had more time to practice. I could teach you, but it might be a bit difficult over the internet unable to hear! :(

Bună Mike,

I hope you'll find a paragraph which is the most suitable as target for Google search.

Don't worry Mike, just make the announcement and I'll mark it as "announcement". Unfortunately, the best I can do is to mark it in the first page of the Romanian forum.

When I buy a guitar I'll let you know;)

Mike, I want to tell you that playing games isn't the only way to learn a foreign language specially if there are no players.
I hope you'll find in the Romanian threads and E-phrasebook enough information to help you to learn.
For the time being, I will focus my efforts in translating words and phrases, dialogue and creating the audio files.

I'm counting on your support, I'll continue to post new threads, and anytime you need help don't hesitate to ask:)

Lina

Salut Lina,

As you have seen, I created the Topic called "Romanian Language Community". I read your post but was unable to respond because it was locked.

I am glad you like what I wrote. Please feel free to use and do whatever you would like with it.

Lina

It's great structured, it couldn't be better!
I have found a way to promote the site, outside Phrasebase, sending online invitations. I will give you the address.
I think this announcement will help us to find people who want to learn Romanian and other language.
I also want to use your announcement, do you agree?

Mulţumesc,

Lina

Mery tagged your thread as announcement and from now on there will be no reply, it is locked. If we want to add something, we both can do it by using option "Edit".

Succes:)

Hi Lina,

I was thinking... It might be good to have a Romanian version of the announcement too. What do you think?

Bună Mike,

It should be good to have the Romanian version!

Lina
Saturday 12th of January 2008 06:07:46 PM

Bine Mike, traduc eu anunţul, ai să vezi că era usor, l-ai scris la modul cel mai simplu:)

Ai intrat pe adresa pe care ţi-am dat-o? Acolo este un loc bun pentru a promova Phrasebase şi mai ales pagina românească.

Salutări,

Lina

It is about an address I received and which can help us promote the site, specially the Romanian page. I used Mike's announcement. There I found all my colleagues from university, all colleagues from every place I worked. I will send them invitations containing the announcement.

Thanks for your intention!

Dear Lina,

I've been learning lots of verbs lately and came across a plăcea- to like. It reminds me of the Spanish verb gustar- to like. Can you tell me if I'm right in my assumption that it is used the same way as Spanish. For example:

1. Îmi place a vorbi limba română. I like to speak Romanian.
2. Îţi place a vorbi limba română. You like to speak Romanian.
3. Îi place a vorbi limba română. He likes to speak Romanian.
4. Ne plac a vorbi limbile. We like to speak the languages.
5. Vă plac a vorbi limbile. You like to speak the languages.
6. Le plac a vorbi limbile. They like to speak the languages.

Am I right? Or am I completely wrong? :D

Lina
Saturday 19th of January 2008 03:35:31 AM

Este aproape bine:)

Romanian use a special phrase to express the difference between a real action "I speak" and a possible action "to speak". The verbs, preceded by conjunction "să", are in the conjunctive mood.

Present Indicative verbs forms starting from infinitive :

a vorbi - eu vorbesc

Present indicative.Present conjunctive

Eu vorbesc. Îmi place să vorbesc româneste.
Tu vorbeşti. Îţi place să vorbeşti româneşte.
El/ea vorbeşte. Îi place să vorbească româneşte.
Noi vorbim. Ne place să vorbim limbi străine (foreign languages)
Voi vorbiţi. Vă place să vorbiţi limbi străine.
Ei/Ele vorbesc. Le place să vorbească limbi străine.

Sper că te ajută!

I did a bunch of them last week. I must admit, I am VERY glad that google provides a safe-search! :)

Thanks very much for your help Lina! I do have one more question :)...

Is the conjunctive always used after the verb a dori? or are there times that it isn't. I know for instance in Italian the conjunctive is always used for the verb to wish, want.

Lina,

I will have to double check but if the image is blurry, then it is much less than 360x270. How can I remove it? I am happy to find another picture for that word. (That's one of the easier words ;) in the list). Thanks.

This weekend was a bit busy and today is my youngest son's birthday. I am hoping to finish the list by the end of the week.

Pot să-ţi dau un indiciu! Întodeauna punem conjuncţia să între două verbe!

Doresc să cânt la chitară.
Doresc o chitară.

Vreau o masină.
Vreau să cumpar o masină.

Probez o rochie.
Încerc să probez o rochie.

Citesc o carte.
Încep sa citesc o carte.

Vezi diferenţa?:)

Da, văd diferenţa acum! Eu am realizat că dacă un verb este după verbele a dori şi a vrea este modul conjunctiv, dar dacă un substantiv este după verbele este normal. Eu ştiu acum că limba română este diferită că limba italiană din cauza acesta. :D

Yes, I see the difference now! I realized that if a verb is after the verbs to wish and to want it is the conjunctive, but if a noun is after the verbs it is normal. I know now that Romanian is diferent that Italian because of this.

I think that's the most I've ever said in Romanian, I hope its correct! ;) Multumesc Lina!

Hi

Sorry, my Romanian isn't good enough to read and write without relying heavily on dictionare.com. It is good practise, but if I don't respond to something it is either because I haven't been able to fully understand it or haven't been able translate if completely. Please continue to post in Romanian and I'll do my best to keep up.

If someone writes to me directly, please be sure to include my name (i.e. "Mike, ....") so that I know to translate this with higher priority. Thanks.

Also, Lina. I have to apologize. I believe I still have about 14 images to post. I had hoped to get this done by today, but time has run out and we are having house guests this weekend. I'll see what I can do for Sunday, but I am going to need a few more days. Thanks for your patience!

Mike

Mulţumesc Lina!

I had suspected that is what that translated to. I couldn't find Happy Birthday, but since it was capitalized, it would have fit the context.

Okay Lina, if you can remove any images that don't fit, I'll see when I continue with it.

I read what you wrote and I realized that firstly it is very important to understand everything we are told, so we can make ourselves understood. For this reason I'll write a few more recommendations in the thead "Recommendations";)
I believe it is a good thing to write in Romanian, since lately we used only English:D

Regarding the images, thanks for your understanding!

Citind ce ai scris, am înţeles că în primul rând este important să înţelegem ce am spus, să ne facem înţeleşi. Din acest motiv voi scrie câteva recomandări în "Recomandări".
Am crezut că este un lucru bun, având în vedere că în ultima vreme noi am folosit doar Engleza.

În ce priveşte pozele, mulţumesc pentru înţelegere!

Here is my opinion about a few of the links that I looked at. All of these games are useful, I guess we'll have to draw the line for some of them. I hope this helps.

1. Alphabet Game - great beginner game.
2. Word Chain - great beginner game.
3. Synonyms Game - more advanced game.
4. Hangman - would be fun with many players.
5. Conjugating Verbs in the Present tense - Kennys newest game edition is the same thing. I say let's keep Kennys game.
6. The gender of the nouns - Similar to Kenny's noun game. May be more beginner friendly.
7. THE PERSON BELOW ME - I've seen this game when I first joined. The diacritics in many of the posts are not displayed correctly. So I have not been interested in playing. Many of the older games do not display the additional characters of the Romanian alphabet.
8. SAY 3 THINGS - I wouldn't mind playing this game, or a similar game.
9. FIND A MISTAKE - I make enough mistakes for Lina to correct ;)
10. GUESS THE WORD - This game would be good if there were less translation that would need to be done.
11. FIND RELATED WORDS, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN - Good beginner game
12. SENTENCE WRITING - Good beginner game
13. FIND NOUNS RELATED TO A VERB - Good beginner game

Hi everyone. I am going to start collecting vocab words for the items below which have been compiled by Lina and Kenny and wanted to get everyones opinion. Should each of these topics go into the same thread or into different threads? I personally would think into the same thread to save space. Anyone disagree?

1. Expressions, Greetings, and Partings
2. Describing Yourself and Others {personality adjectives)
3. Where do you live? and Where are you from? (places/to live/to be from)
4. What is your name? and How old are you? (Names/Birthdays)
5. What day is it? (Days, months, year)
6. How do you feel? (feelings, to feel, etc.)
7. What do you like to do? (Basic verb activities and To like)
8. What are you wearing? (Clothing, colors, to wear)
9. About your family (Family nouns and age adjectives)
10. School and Classes (Classes and school nouns/verbs)
11. What time is it? (Time expressions and nouns)
12. Eating and Drinking (foods, drinks, to eat, to drink)
13. Going Places (common buildings/places and to go)
15. Sports and Recreation
16. Weather (Weather expressions and to have expressions)

I sent you another big PM hopefully you will receive it. In case you don't here's my view on the games.

1. Alphabet Game - great beginner game.
2. Word Chain - great beginner game.
3. Synonyms Game - more advanced game.
4. Hangman - Not very practical I origanally voted to get rid of it.
5. Conjugating Verbs in the Present tense - Kennys newest game edition is the same thing. I say let's keep Kennys game. Yep! :)
6. The gender of the nouns - I thought this was covered already.
7. THE PERSON BELOW ME - I say we should keep it but repost it for a fresh start. Advanced Game
8. SAY 3 THINGS - I say we should keep it but repost it for a fresh start. Advanced Game
9. FIND A MISTAKE - A nice advanced game
10. GUESS THE WORD - Too complicated in my opinion I originally voted against it.
11. FIND RELATED WORDS, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN - Ok not great intermediate game, and repost
12. SENTENCE WRITING - Nice Intermediate Game
13. FIND NOUNS RELATED TO A VERB - Advanced in my opinion and needs to be reposted.

P.S. Is the song in my signature below correct? I translated it myself and would like to know. ;)

6.Synonyms

Delete

9.Gender of the nouns
10.Say 3 things
11.Guess the word

New start

12.TPBM
13.Find related words, as much as you can
14.Find nouns related to a verb

Bună băieţi,

Is anyone still interested in this thread?

I have a proposal concerning the lessons. We wait for Kenny's lesson with the verbs and Avaldi's "painted" menus to be posted, and afterwards we won't post any lesson until we have studied all, grammar and lessons and Mike's vocabulary.
The exercises aren't difficult at all, but important.
We will go through grammar, conversation and vocabulary. You'll do the exercises, ask questions, and I'll correct the mistakes:D

What do you think? We are moving too fast;)

Hello Sergiu! Indeed a long time has passed since you last wrote on the forum. It is true that you haven't seen the topics debated on the Romanian forum? Do you believe that the active members and those less active who want to study Romanian on this site are "nobody"? For me, they matter, indifferent of how numerous they are.
My opinion is that you could help a lot more inside Phrasebase, than you do it on outside.

I wish you good luck and I hope to see you on the forum.

Hi zeering, I also wondered why the members don't participate on Romanian forum. If I was thinking only to that question I wouldn't do anything on this forum!
Statistically speaking, if we take in consideration last year(2007-2008), there are 230 native Romanian members and 250 members who wish to learn Romanian. It is interesting and weird at the same time! It would have been natural to share their opinions so at least we could know what to do, what to improve!
Anyhow I tried to do the best I could, and I want to thank Avaldi, Mike and Kenny. Their contribution was really great. Who could have thought that members, who are non native Romanian, can do so much for the Romanian language section?

And zeering, the lessons are not additional, we have worked by a plan as you can see in the Romanian index:)

I wish you good luck and we look forward to seeing you on the forum!

Salut!

Ce mai faceţi, sunteţi bine? Am fost pentru câteva zile plecată din Arad, prin ţară. Am pozat câteva locuri specifice româneşti. Sper să vi le pot arăta.

How are you? I hope everything is fine. I was gone for a couple of days out of Arad. I took some photos of the characteristics Romanian places. I hope I get the chance of showing them to you:)

Hi Mike,

This is the situation, there are a lot of changes! As soon as Romanian page comprises these changes, everything will turn back to normal.

Hi everyone,

I hope you don't mind that I've corrected the titles of those threads in which the diacritics were not displayed.

Thanks,

Well, I've been working as hard as I can considering the time I have to devote to my Romanian studies each day while still holding down my job, lol.

I've looked back through the vocabulary lists and the grammar lessons ETC and what I am thinking that I would like to see right now is a lesson in beginning verb tenses...and possibly something about the form & uses of the Romanian version of the gerund &/or participle word forms?

One other quick thing: I continue to say 'Ce mai faceţi' to my Romanian neighbors yet continue to get puzzling responses from them like "I'm at work" by the handyman at my apartment complex or "Nimic" from my next-door neighbor.

Am I asking How are you? or could there be something in the way I'm pronouncing the words that makes it sound like I'm asking What are you doing?

In written chat there doesn't seem to be this problem, I always get a 'Bine' or some similar response.

?

Thanks.

You are right, it's time to speak about verbs:)Kenny has started the grammar lessons but he has stopped for a while. I'll see what is to do!

Regarding the greeting expressions, it's correct to ask "Ce mai faceţi?/How are you?"
At this question the answer is "I'm fine, thanks/Sunt bine, mulţumesc"

What are you doing?/ Ce faci? - I'm at work/Sunt la servici
How are you doing?/ Ce mai faceţi? Cum o mai duci? - I'm doing fine/Sunt bine

Cu plăcere!

Maybe we could have a thread with common non-literal expressions in Romanian, if there isn't one already. Many times, I will hear or read something that can't be translated literally - you just have to know what it means, such as "am băut cât şapte" or "nu-ţi faci de cap"! Maybe other people know more phrases like this.

Becky, I think it's a good idea to start a new thread about non-literal expressions. Romanian language has a lot of such expressions.

"sunt ruptă de oboseală"
"mor de foame"

:)

I have an idea that I wanted to propose.

I've been listening to a lot of romanian radio, mainly I try to recognise words and phrases here or there which I am getting better. However, there is a point when I stop listening to words being spoken and just listen to the accent which is what I want to correct.

My idea: I suppose this might be called auditory comprehension although another term might exist. It would require one of the romanian natives to record themselves speaking words, phrases, dialogues and/or paragraphs so that us students can attempt to write what we hear and post for correction.

The best method I think would be to record a single file containing 10-20 sections. The first would be easier and the last would be more complex. Certainly, there can be as many as the author wants to do. These sections can contain sentences or paragraphs from a newspaper article, book or even something made up by the author.

Suggested example:
1-4: random words
5-9: greetings or dialogue.(Perhaps from avaldi's lessons)
10-14: random sentences
15-20: paragraphs from books, magazines or newspapers.

The goal here is to become more accustomed to hearing the language with the ability to distinguish words correctly and assess where we stand comprehending what is said. Also work on spelling too.

Is this a good or a bad idea? Comments and criticisms are welcome.

Mike

Mike, it's a good idea but it doesn't have to mix with what we have in the e-phrasebook. To record several dialogues and interesting articles, also seems quite great. You will have to record the same files in Romanian. Agree?

To serve what purpose, pronunciation training? That is a good idea as well. Although, might be better handled in the classroom where there can be immediate correction.

Ar fi grozav. Toţi prietenii de pe forum vor vorbi perfect româneşte şi când vor veni în România sau vor vorbi cu români sau chiar străini, vor şti româna aşa de bine încât vor fi consideraţi români.

Sau se vor da drept români şi vor păcăli pe toată lumea.
Abia aştept să începem. Va fi foarte bine.
Cred că vom reuşi.

When romanian schools teach the different verb forms, how do they accomplish such a task? What methods can you suggest to help simplify this learning? I am considering preparing repetition lessons so I am interested in hearing how romanians are taught in school. Maybe I can find such methods useful.

I am sure that by the time schools cover this topic, many of the words are already known by the students in some form or another. But any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

We learn the language easier because it is our language.
At the University we were told that there is a percentage that is inborn. Children born in a country will learn the language much easier because part of it is born with them. it is in the genes.

Besides, people speak it naturally, all the time. You hear the others speaking it. The parents correct the children, at school.

I had a book for the foreigners who wanted to learn Romanian. I lent it to somebody and I have not received it back.

There are groups of verbs according to certain characteristics, suffixes

I don't know whether this is the best place to ask about these things, but I can't seem to find a better one, so

1) Several times I have clicked on links within Phrasebase only to have a note appear which says Premium Members only. However I can't find the page where a person can sign up for Premium status, pay for Premium membership, or even locate a Contact address to inquire about this. Does anyone actually know why this is, without just guessing? TIA.

2) I really like how the Words and Phrases departments have been coming along. I wonder if it might be possible for one of our teachers who is fluent in Romanian to add a Money and Business page to the Phrases options, I can't even find out how to say the word "cash" in Romanian (cash as opposed to credit or check, for instance; is it just 'bani' or must one add 'gheata' as some dictionaries suggest or what?) when trying to discuss loans or investing or stocks and bonds and so on. Especially with all of the current financial problems in the U.S. and all over the world right now, I would think many would find such a resource helpful. Again, thanks in advance for considering the proposal.

3) What is the story on the Webcam Classroom teaching? I have visited that many times and never seen anyone else in there. Is it a result of simple lack of interest? I know one problem is that where I live I am 10 hours behind Romania but I am curious anyway as hearing & interpreting spoken colloquial Ro is the main deficiency I have which I would like to correct.

I don't have as much time to spend here as I once did, but I really really like this site and appreciate greatly the time & help the teachers devote to making it so helpful. I will probably be traveling to Romania before I can perfect my ability with the language but I certainly expect to catch on quickly once I am there, largely due to the help I have found online from native speakers on this site and a few others like it (but not as good).

Thank you.

I am SO looking forward to posting here from within Romanian borders. Iasi, Bucuresti, Timisoara, Cluj, Arad, Ploiesti, Brasov, Constanta, I hope to have a look at all of these places (and more) and without visiting sites like this one I never would even have heard of these cities (except for Bucuresti, desigur), let alone become a regular viewer of TV Ro!

E grozav! Uimitor!

Multumesc mult, all.

I found a site with videos in Romanian language:
http://www.220.ro/video/calatorii-natura-locuri-vizitate-23/

It can be useful to ear Romanian.
On French forum we add subtitles on some few videos to help foreign students to understand sentences. It's not a big succes yet so I don't know if it would be interesting on Romanian forum?
It's just an idea.

Bună!

I haven't been on much lately and I plan on doing some things. First of all I've been studying hard and I really feel much better about some things in Romanian. I plan to revise and finish writing my grammar lessons and make them a bit simpler. :)

Also if anyone is interested, I've been studying on my own I've made lots of good vocab lists. Each with one grammar concept. I will gladly send you the lists if you want and that way the learners can practice together. I also have tests that I've given myself.

I'm also on the lookout for good Romanian sites to listen to Romanian and read it where its easy to hear. I recently downloaded a podcast from iTunes about Romanian and it made me laugh like crazy because when they said, "Fac foarte bine" I sounded very inappropriate in English. :ha

And most importantly... Ce faceţi? Discutam lucruri mereu, dar acum acest forum este mort.
How is everybody? We used to discuss things all the time, but now the forum is dead.

Salut Kenny, Ce faci?

Can you post your grammer lessons? I'd love to work on them off of the internet. If you can't do that, I can PM you my email address to send them.

I used to listen to rri.ro (radio română internaţional). They play music and tons of news and interviews. Often they speech is too fast for me, but you recognize words here and there. For this, I STRONGLY recommend for you to record the streaming audio so you can play back. The more you listen to the same clip, you'll begin to recognize more and more words. I typically record 5-10 minute clips and save them as mp3's so that they can play on my iPod. Do a google search for "Freecorder". This program will load as a toolbar when you open your browser and enable you to record audio.

Other than rri.ro, look for poems (romanianvoice.com) and songs in which you can get the lyrics for (youtube and google search). Memorize them so that you can recite along with the audio. I find memorization to be more helpful than reading along. This will really help your understanding of the sounds of the language. Flow is important and this will force you to "keep up" with the audio. You'll see what I mean with "keep up". :D

(NOTE: I couldn't get freecorder to work with the upgrade to Windows Media Player vers. 9 but that might have changed by now.)

Pa,
Mike
