Verbul Neregulat. - I've started this post before, but no one replied. So I thought I would start it again. As the natives know "Verbul Neregulat." means "The Irregular Verbs". I thought if both students+natives could help us establish some posts of the irregulars and their conjugations. I guess I'll start first.

A Sta - To Stay

Eu stau.
Tu stai.
El/Ea sta.
Noi stăm.
Voi staţi.
Ei/Ele stau.

who wants to post the next verb? :)

(oh and Lore: how do I say "who" in Romanian?)

It's "cine?" so your question would be "Cine vrea să posteze următorul verb?"

I guess that would be me. :D Why don't we start with one that is surely useful and certainly irregular in any language:
a fi - to be

Just to mention it: "verbul neregulat" means "the irregular verbs", and "the irregular verbs" would be "verbele neregulate". (Hehe, just got an idea for the Plurals thread :p).

- Excellent, Stjerne! :) And this was a "really irregular" :D one.

The next one often present even native speakers with problems; but I'm sure you'll "conquer" it. ;)

Mănānc paste. :p

a mānca

eu mănānc
tu mănānci
el/ea mănāncă
noi māncăm
voi māncaţi
ei/ele mănāncă
Remember, there is no Present Continuous tense in Romanian so we use the Present Simple for progressive actions also.
"Mănānc paste" can be both "I eat pasta" (generally) or "I'm eating pasta" (right now), depending on the context.

If you're talking about the difference between "a mānca" and "a mīnca" then no, they are actually one and the same verb. Actually, you can only differentiate between them in writing, as the letters "ā" and "ī" represent the same phoneme. However, in 1993 the Romanian Academy introduced a spelling reform and, since then, the letter "ī" is only used at the beginning or the end of a word or inside a word only if this was formed by adding a prefix (e.g. "a īmpăca" - to pacify --> "a reīmpăca"). In all other situations we use "ā" ("cānd" - when, "gānd" - thought).
Therefore, "a mānca" is the only correct way of spelling the verb "to eat" (at least for the time being).
By the way, this was the same reform that transformed "sīnt" ("a fi", I person, sg. and III person pl.) into "sunt". "sīntem" into "suntem", "sīnteţi" into "sunteţi."

If you were referring to synonyms for "a mānca", off the top of my head "a se alimenta" (to feed oneself), "a consuma" (to consume), "a se hrăni" (to nourish oneself). There are also "a hali" and "a hapli", "a hăpăi" but these are really colloquial and not perfect synonyms, they lean towards "to devour", "to eat heartily and quickly".

Let's go on with: a vrea - to want.
