Spanish Games 9 - Word Chain - Cadena de Palabras:
In this game you have to add a new word that begins with the last letter of the previous word. Please don’t forget to give us an English translation too, so we can learn together.:)
Later, if you want, you can write down a sentence using your word.

Let's start

ventana (window)

The next word has to start with A :)

Question: Doesn't "Arboles de naranja crecen en Florida" sound better or am I wrong :)your sentence sounds mmm.. poetical. My alternatives would be:
"Los naranjos crecen en Florida".. but... not only there, so unless you are refering to some specific trees, you should not use this one.
"En Florida crecen naranjos" This one sounds better.
Why? Let me babble a little to see if I find something in my mind :p To me, it sems the first element receives more importance. In the first one ("Los naranjos...") you are placing the emphasis on the orange trees, you are talking about them (and not any orange trees, but some you've been talking about). The second one only states a fact. mmm.. maybe that's an explanation... maybe not. But you can ask :D [not sure the answer would be a good one either! :p]

In Spanish you cannot say "ir a mi amigo". That's incorrect. You can say "ir a casa de mi amigo" but as you have already mentioned the word "casa" it's better not to repeat it again and say what Javi has written. "ir a la de mi amigo". ;)
This "LA" refers to casa.

Examples:

El coche de mi amigo es rojo pero el de mi amiga es azul.

That sounds better than to say:

El coche de mi amigo es rojo pero el coche de mi amiga es azul.

Do you understand it now? ;)

oh, sorry... my fault! I didn't see it is a not so easy construction.
I'll add some confusion here.
When studying English, the form "I went to my parents" sounds odd to us. Like.. we need to say something like "I went to my parents' house", as a mental trick for us to accept that one :p Than one would be translated as "Fui a la casa de mis papás". As Goran already said, repeating the noun casa would make your sentence sound odd [as when you say "Goran said this and Goran went there and Goran bought that..." To make it sound more natural, you replace his name with a pronoun].
English has a different method to do this:
"I saw the ugly man standing there. The handsome one was in the car". Here, one is placed there instead of man... who is obviously different from the other.
Spanish uses its articles to accomplish that function.
"Perdí mi lápiz. Por eso uso el [lápiz] de mi amigo." = I lost my pencil. That's why I'm using my friend's one.
Why de there? Because we are talking about something belonging to someone. Not that it's necesary add de but only if you are not using a pronoun:
"De su casa vinieron a la mía" = From their home, they came to mine.
Let change things a little. Let's stop talking about possession. Anothe rexample then:
"El carro rojo es más barato que el azul." = The red car is cheaper than the blue one.
I've typed some.. and I don't know if it's even understandable :S If I created more confusion, we'll think of some other way to explain.

muchisímas gracias, Goran y Javi (well, probably you can´t say like this in spanish but it´s what I meant and then I´ll have new corrections:))
short summary then: when you say you´re going to visit somebody you have to specify the place like home, cafe or anything. And instaed of repeating a name or just a noun you use el and la.... at least this´s how I understood
But then one more question appears;))
cómo se dice "I´m going to take this red hat and that one also", I mean when you don´t specify the other object by adjective or smth else but use just the word "this" or "that". Do u use then el,la or ese, este?

y otra palabra;)
isla - island

¿Cómo se dice "I´m going to take this red hat and that one also"?But.. but.. but.. :p that is being used as an adjective! It would be: "... este sombrero rojo, y ése también." We've said before that ése is a demonstrative pronoun, as the noun it substitutes (sombrero) is masculine singular.
También Reddie
He estado en las islas griegas y me gustan mucho.Why las? If you don't use it, it give the idea that there are a lot of them. some in the Mediterranean sea, some any other place! If you use unas, then you'll be saying that about only those, because you are not sur about the rest. But when using las maybe you haven't been to all of them, but infering from the one you've been to.
Spanish version of "I like something" is a little tricky: "Me gusta algo". The pronoun refers to the perosn who likes. So you have I like = Me gusta. You like = Te gusta. He likes = Le gusta. and so on.
After that you say what the object liked is:
I like my job = Me gusta mi trabajo.
But you tried to give a sentence where you don't say directly what you like (the Greek islands), because it was mentioned before. English language needs an object pronoun (them), but Spanish language don't. Then how do you express that?
I like it = Me gusta [eso]. Here, eso is optional. If you omit it, it still makes sense.
I like them = me gustan. Note here that if there are multiple objects you want (gosh! I mean.. if it's a plural!), then you change the verb to plural form.

Hi there Javi,

LOL, Javi, I've been going over your responses to my question since your post and each time I think
that I understand, I just lose it. Please forgive me for phrasing my thought processes in English,
but I will never get through it in spanish... oh, my questions are the choice of preterite or imperfect verb form...

My original english sentence:
I knew the sentence I wrote just didn't "feel right", but you seemed to know that and answered my question.

~~~~~
My original translation:
Supe la frase que escribi no se sintió derecho, pero pareció saber eso y contestó mi pregunta.
Supe: preterite... past, complete... I knew IT, that the sentence wasn't right... complete, done
escribi: escribir - wasn't writing or still writing, therefor preterite... forgot the accent mark, :)
se sintió derecho: also felt... done... preterite...
pareció saber: again... complete... preterite and saber, to know
contestó: answered, not answering, done, preterite
~~~~~
Your corrections to my phrasing:
Sabía que la frase que escribí no sonaba bien, pero pareció que supo eso y contestó mi pregunta.

Sabía: changed to imperfect... ?
que: this I understand... my poor english :)
escribí: we agree :D
no sonaba bien: doesn't sound well... I like this better than doesn't feel right, but imperfect?
pareció que supo: we agree on the preterite form of parecer, but I don't understand why you added "que"
and conjugated saber and can only assumed that you conjugated saber in the preterite because parecer
was conjugated in the preterite.
contestó: ok, we agree again :)

~~~~~
My phrase in your words:
Supe que la oración que escribí no sonaba bien, pero parece que lo sabías y contestaste mi pregunta.
Supe: ok... you're confusing me here because you switch back to preterite
la oración: hmmm... the prayer?
parece: present tense, maybe a typo just to confuse me? lol
sabías y contestaste: sabías - imperfect and contestaste - preterite? hmmmm...
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE :D accept my apologies for not using the tú form... I got caught up in the
translation and forgot that it is very important the difference in the two forms...
are we still friends? :)
Well, I hope that you navigate through all of that. It is 2 a.m. and you are probably offline by now...
Hasta mañana,
Anette
ps: Have you heard from Lore?
What can I say? :D lol I hope to keep leaving you with doubts, because this way it seems we are getting somewhere :p
First of all, let me tell you something. This perfect/imperfect thing is also new for me. I came to realize this exists in Spanish some 6 years ago, while studying Russian. I was surprised to know we had this in Spanish :p lol Maybe I'm not the only one finding out things about his own language.
When I correct here, I first do it according to what I'd have said. After that, I try to see if I can explain why. Doing this, I've come to know that... I don't know my language. All what is below this line might confuse you more :s You know it's not my intention.
Sabía/supe. May you tell me, if you knew (perfect mode) it, why didn't you change it? You wrote it that way because you thought that was the right way, right? [mmm.. unless you are typing things wrong to make us correct you!] You only suspected it. something was telling you "there must be wrong... you always get corrections... but.. what is it?" Then, until the correction, that sensation ended, right? Because it became reality. Only THEN, it became perfect. But you are not talking about that precise point in time, but about a time before. If I say "Supe la respuesta durante el examen", I knew it at that time... I'm talking about it. "Sabía la respuesta durante el examen"... and here something else happened. In your sentence, you knew it, then I came a corrected it.
sabías/supiste. Same thing here. It only seemed. It wasn't completed, because all time that was happening, I hadn't reply. When I replied, then it became perfect. But again, you are talking about a time before that.
sonaba/sonó. The same here. Imperfect because in your mind it had this feeling of "not right".. but it lasted soe time during the period between your post and my reply.
contestó - escribí. We are not talking about a process with those verbs. Actions were completed by the time you are refering.
maybe a typo just to confuse me?
pareció/parece. No typo here. It always seems. It still does.
are we still friends?mmm... *hugs Anette* :pyou're confusing me here because you switch back to preteritelol sorry... let it be sabía.
la oración: hmmm... the prayer?No. It can also mean that, but here it means the sentence.
Have you heard from Lore?She's hiding from us. :p
PS: I hope that was correct.It'd be easy if everybody starts using the most normal words first. Zanjar is not so normal. But.. how can you know if it is normal or not? :( Sorry, no answer for that :(
A zanjar is to dig, you are right, but to do a strip only, as when you do when building a house (the base, the groundwork). Like... the dig you do to place a fence in your yard. The word in that sentence should be cavar.
Moreover, I would not use "zanjar" to refer to when I dig a line, but "cavar", as in:
Estoy cavando una línea para plantar la valla.
Furthermore, the verb "zanjar" also means "to settle an issue / an argument".
Tal vez tiene razón, diciendo sobre 'barrack'.
Well.. I hear barraca and in my infinite ignorace, a place where troops sleep comes to my mind. Like... the huge sleeping rooms in camp sites.
En año allí veinte zodíacs.Are you talking about the signs? Because maybe you should have said
En el año hay doce signos del zodiaco. [I use the other spelling.. without the accent mark]
But even thought it is perfectly correct sentence.. it sounds weird to me. Why not simply say Hay doce signos del zodiaco? Like.. nobody talks about the number of signs in a week or in a month, as that does not makes much sense. At least to me.
But.. I ask again: ADD THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION, PLEASE. I guess not many of you help with the languages you know. But.. if you do, you have to admit it is hell difficult to interpret the meaning of a sentence.. and still keep the original idea.
So... I won't say anything more if there is no English translation in practise sentences. That's all.
@jvz8a, sorry for my hurd understanding phrases writting in Spanish. I don't understand why is that such??? Or may be I am not strong in the Spanish grammar, but in this way, I want to thank you for your great patience to explain these mistakes in Spanish. Yes, you are right, maybe I am wrong. Let me say a little about 'barrack', I wanted to say about 'сарай' (the transcription of it will be 'saray') that means about an old wooden building, but how explain it??
The word I'd give to the last one is cobertizo. It looks like a place to keep things to take care of the garden.
And my little Russian-Spanish dictionary says:
сарай - cobertizo
I owe you an apology, Bereza. In that post I sound dead pissed. When I was requesting for translations, it was not only to you, but to everyone. It'd make things easier. Instead of rambling in possible meanings, I could focus on things you wanted to say. Many times I feel I "explain" things that in the end nothing had to do... or maybe were things people already knew.
For example, if the word chuzo is in the dictionary, but none of natives here know the word, then we'd suggest to use a "normal2 word. What's the point in using a real word we won't understand anyway? In part it's because, as a natives, we ignore a lot of our language. It is not student's fault we don't know a word in our own language. But if there are alternatives to say things and still sound as we would sound, then we must point to that. That's what I try to do here. Ivan asked if I felt like a teacher here. Not really. I am only trying to help with what I know. I can't teach. But I am too picky with Spanish. I've always been.
Sorry. I didn't mean to bring to this forum my personal problems :(
Again, I apologize.
