Sunday 08th of October 2006 10:48:44 AMSwahili textbook + Audio Material?:
Thanks to my old roommate who's originally from Kenya, I’ve learnt some basic sentences and greetings in Swahili, but would love to go further than that.
So, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good textbook + audio material (CDs)
for learning Swahili.
I am usually tight with time, so being able to listen to it, while doing other things would help a lot. I'm not really looking for those 10 hour courses etc, but more for something to help me build a solid foundation.
I found only “Teach Yourself Swahili” on Amazon, but received mixed reactions to it: some say it is laid out well, others mention it’s good if I’m looking for a review.
There’s also PIMSLEUR Swahili but I’ve never used their language courses and there’s no any user recommendation on Amazon, so I have no idea if material is well organized and what approach they use.
Any word of advice is appreciated.

I just discovered that UPenn has a Swahili learning website http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/kiswahili/ and they are using "Swahili: a foundation for speaking, reading and writing" by Hinnebusch and Mirza (2nd ed.) for their elementary Swahili classes.
If you are familiar with that work, or know what material some other universities use, please let me know.
