| Som or det? - When would I use which? Here are two phrases that I'm making up now: Någon som jag inte känner Något det jag inte känner Are they correct? What happens if the 'som' and 'det' are swapped? Because I'm not quite sure what the difference is. 'Någon det' looks awkward at least.. | |

| - Your feeling is right. Någon som jag inte känner. "som" is like the English "which" or "who". Someone whom I don't know. I don't think you can use "det" in that sense at all, but I'm giving no guarantees. ;) | |

| - You can't use your version at all Teup, as far as I know. [i]Som[/i] is (unless i'm totally messing things up) what in swedish is called a "reflextivt pronomen" - a reflexive (?) pronoun. That is, something which is reflecting back to something earlier in the sentence. In this case Något. And as in Madrynea's examples: Det som jag sa igår... som => Det En människa som jag pratade med... som => En människa Äpplena som vi köpte... Som => Äpplena Sometimes som kan "point" back to a whole sentence etc | |

Ah yes, I find things like: "om jag ändå aldrig får [b]det[/b] jag vill ha" (if i never get [b]what[/b] I want to have anyway) Yeah, in that case it's indeed not reflexive. Putting 'som' there sounds really wrong to me (let me know in case it isn't! :) ) (but maybe 'det som' perhaps?) It must be that (in this context) 'det' means 'what' whereas 'som' means 'that'. Hey, how would this sentence translate? "I don't know what's in there" I'm not really sure what kind of pronouns are involved there.. It might just involve both :) | |

[/quote] Sorry, really offtopic, just wanted to try and correct some of this to train my german a bit (my version probably has mistakes, maybe together we can get to a good version :p) Woll jemand mir Schwedisch helfen zu lernen? Ich möchte auch Norwegisch lernen. Ich kann helfen mit Deutsch und Russisch lernen. Sorry for practising German in the Swedish forum, moderators.. :D | |
