I've just read in a Swedish language book the next sentence:

I am not quite sure how you pronounce "ge": like in German "ge" (beispiel: gern) oder like in German "je" = "ever".
What about "mig"? How is this pronounced?

What about the whole sentence: is it polite to ask for a coffe in this way?

:) - hejhej liviu :)

i wouldn't have put it quite that way (referring to the coffee-sentence).tricky question, you can ask for coffe in so many ways. but in the situation i think you've gotten this one from, the more common question would've been:

vill du vara snäll och ge mig lite kaffe tack? (would you please give me)

but, depending on the situation, you also coul've said:
kan jag få lite kaffe tack? or (can i have)
skulle jag kunna få lite kaffe? (could i have)

your sentence, var snäll och ge mig lite kaffe, sounds more lika a demand. i really laughed out loud ;) it also sounds very made-up and old fashioned..;)

give me a bigger part of the dialouge to translate- that will make it much more easy ;)

ge is pronunced like in "jemand" and mig is pronunced like the english word may. that's the best word i can think of..:)

The text is from book "Swedish - A complete course for beginners", by Vera Croghan.
Even though I am a beginner in Swedish, I had a feeling that the sentence was not right. The sentence is from an exercice about a text. In the text, a Swedish family invites an English family for lunch. In the exercise, the sentence is given as the translation for: "Please, give me some coffee".

To be honest, I find the book rather confusing. It is definitely not for beginners, it is rather for somebody who has already some knowledge in Swedish. Many things are not explained in the book, but probably assumed that the reader already knows them.

I have the greatest desire and ambition to learn Swedish, but I think I need the help of a native speaker of Swedish, and it would be great to stay in touch with you. Do you want to learn Italian? I have some command in spoken Italian (not written), so we could practise some Italian too.

Back to Swedish, how do you say "I speak a little Swedish"?
Would "Jag talar lite gran svenska" be correct?
And how do you pronounce "gran"? The book I mentioned has 2 tapes, so I can listen how some words are pronounced. According to the tape, I have the feeling that "gran" is pronounced rather like "geran", where again "ge" is treated like in German. Is that correct?

And by the way, what does "vara bara roligt" mean?

firstly, oops- my mistake: i meant to write "var bara roligt" ie my pleasure :)

gee;), just give that sentence up...;) i could explain why she put it that way but you'd never use it in everyday swedish anyway. we use it at times, but just for a laugh ;)
i just told me friend and he said he'd use it- meaning to be polite..but just say "kaffe tack" or "skulle jag kunna få lite kaffe tack" or "skulle du vilja ge mig lite kaffe" :)

i speak a little swedish:
jag kan inte så mycket svenska/jag kan bara lite svenska
(using can instead of speak)
jag = i
kan = can
inte så mycket/bara lite = not so much/ just a little

lite grann, NOT lite gran (gran = fir) :)
the g is like ge in german yes, like gemeinschaft :)

Are "grann" och "gran" pronounced the same way?

I have a questions about Swedes. I know they travel a lot, but is it usually for Swedes to travel to the Dominican Republic? Is Dominican Republic one of the favorite destinations for Swedes? I am asking this questions because in 2 weeks from now I will travel to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks and I wonder whether I might meet some Swedes over there. I was to Dominican Republic 3 years ago. There were tourists from Europe, but mostly from Germany, France, Switzerland. Unfortunately, I didn't meet anybody from Sweden.

If I am lucky this time and I meet a Swede, what is the most usual way to ask "How are you?"? I know there are different ways to ask this.

dom. republic - :)

gran and grann are not pronunced the same way..two identical consonants after a vowel makes a lighter sound than just one consonant.
the a in gran is like the a in "errand" (brittish pronunciation, not american), while the a in grann is more like the sound of the u in "undertake"

it's very cheap to go to the dominican republic from here, and i think it's pretty common. goes a lot of charters and so. but i think it used to be more popular a couple of years ago, nowadays youths choosing to go to asia or south america instead. you still should be able to find some swedes though :)

hur e läget?
hur ere? (ie hur är det, but said fast as it commonly is, it sounds like hur ere)

Jag stiger upp klockan halv sju, för vi äter frukost tio över sju.

How would you translate "för" in this case?

What other meanings does the word "för" have?

det är så bra så - hur är det själv?

för = for

i never really say "jag stiger upp" = i get up
i say "jag går upp" (gå = go)

but you say "dags att stiga upp" = time to get up
(or of course "dags att gå upp")
you can also say: "dags att kliva upp"

"jag stiger upp klockan halv sju, för vi äter frukost tio över sju" in everyday language is:
"jag går upp halv sju, för vi äter frukost tio över".

för = for
för = stem :D
för = because

then there are a bunch of phrases where för is used in swedish but not in the english equivalent

some examples:
anklagad för - accused of
jag får inte för pappa - father won't let me

I would have now a few sentences to translate into Swedish, please.

I would like to travel to Sweden next year.
Swedish is a very interesting language.
I have a passion for Swedish (language).
I don't think that Swedish language is difficult to learn.
I have some problems with the prononciation.
My understanding is not very well. ( I have troubles in understanding spoken Swedish.)

Also, what does "Jag fick ett invall" means?

you really don't say
"tack det är så bra så också"

use either:
"tack det är så bra så" /or/
"tack det är så bra här också så"

to the sentences:
Jag skulle vilja åka till Sverige nästa år.
Svenska är ett väldigt intressant språk.
jag hyser en verklig passion för svenska..

but more commonly i would have said:
"jag är verkligen jätteförtjust i svenska"

jag tycker inte att det är så svårt att lära sig svenska.
Jag har lite problem med uttalet.
Jag har svårt att förstå (talad svenska).

I think you mean:
"jag fick ett infall"
which means:
"i had an idea"

infall also translates with: whim, fancy..

Hej anneli, jag heter Pete och jag kommer från England. Jag vill också lära sig svenska (varit inlärning för uppskattningsvis tre månaders, och det syns verkligen :) ), så om du skulle hjälpa mej det skulle vara underbar.

Learning swedish is funny!! - hej all..
okej..I think that learning languages is one of the most useful steps ppl could do in their life!..other than that,I personaly think that earning the chance to speak new languages\'s so important for every single person in the world to be able to communicate with ppl all over the world in focus!...my focus on swedish language doesn\'t come randomly,I realized the swedish language\'s a beautiful language and is worth learning!!..haj da
