Colours-Renkler & dır-dir &strong-soft vowels - beyaz = white

siyah = black

mavi = blue

sarı = yellow

kırmızı = red

yeşil = green

gri = grey

turuncu = orange

pembe = pink

mor = purple

kahverengi = brown

some examples - siyah ev (black house)

mavi araba (blue car)

beyaz pencere (white window)

sarı elbise (yellow dress)

kırmızı defter (red notebook)

yeşil ağaç (green tree)

and check these ones;

grey table = gri masa
a grey table = gri bir masa

a brown coat = kahverengi bir mont

a red heart = kırmızı bir kalp

red love = kırmızı aşk

dır and dir - here we go on...

this is a white chair.
bu bir beyaz sandalyedir.

bu=this
beyaz=white
a=bir (article)
sandalye= chair (no gender problem)
dir = it is a sentence used in simple present tense.

this is a yellow flower.
bu bir sarı çiçektir.

be careful!
we said \"sandalyedir\"
but
we said \"çiçektir\"

it is because...

if a word ends with \"p,ç,t,k\" characters, it turns to be used ad \"t\" by saying \"tir\"

note: also if a word ends with a vowel, we use \"d\".

let\'s check some other examples...

benim adım Mirza\'dır. (my name is Mirza)
we used \"dır\" because sentence ended with a vowel.
also we used \"\'\" after Mirza, because Mirza is private name.

E,e İ,i Ö,ö Ü,ü >>>> These are soft vowels

if a word(at the end of sentence) ends with strong vowel, we use \"dır\" in present simple tense(geniş zaman)
if a word (at the end of sentence) ends with soft vowel, we use \"dir\" in geniş zaman.

bizim ev güzeldir. >>>> our house is beautiful

sizin şehir uzaktır >>>> your city is far.

how do u say \"how do you say ..... in turkish?\" :)
and how do u say \"skyblue\" and \"chocolate brown\"?
how do u say \"dark green\" and \"light green\" for example?
and do u have phrases such as ... as white as snow ... as black as coal .... how would you say \" her eyes are greenish most days but can turn bluish some others\"

No, the title is correct as \"-dır, -dir.\" We use these suffixes as tense indicators. Although they may be omitted in daily speech, if you want to be grammatically correct you have to stick to those. For instance;

Bu bir mavi arabadır. (This is a blue car.) - grammatically correct form. But it will be mostly the case that you will hear this instead;

Bu bir mavi araba.

Now your questions...

\"How do you say .... in Turkish?\" (Türkçe\'de .... nasıl denir?)

skyblue - gök mavisi

chocolate brown - çikolata kahve

dark green - koyu yeşil

light green - açık yeşil

You can use the words \"koyu/açık\" for all the colors ;)
(açık mavi, koyu mavi, koyu sarı, açık sarı etc...)

\"Her eyes are greenish most days but can turn bluish some others.\"

\"Onun gözleri çoğu günler yeşildir, ama bazı günler maviye çalabilir.\"

And now the phrase AS....AS!!! (KADAR)

as white as snow - kar kadar beyaz (first the word, then \"kadar\" and lastly the adjective that you wish to liken the word to.)

as black as coal - kömür kadar siyah

One other example:

çocuk kadar masum (as innocent as a kid)

You\'re very welcome! I\'m glad that i can help.

\"bembeyaz\" means \"snow-white, extremely white, whiter than white.\" This structure is used to emphasize that the color we\'re referring is really really white or whatever the color is :p

For instance;

masmavi (for blue)
sapsarı (for yellow)
simsiyah (for black)
kıpkırmızı (for red)
yemyeşil (for green)
mosmor (for purple)
pespembe (for pink)

i.e. : \"Dağlar yemyeşil.\" (mountains are extremely green.)

- The same logic applies here, like in english

This is a yellow flower
This flower is yellow

The most important component of a sentence in turkish is the one before the verb. The rule is the closer to the verb the the more important component it is. In a regular turkish sentence the indefinite article \"bir\" is used between an adjective and a noun. Your sentence requires correction it must be \"çiçek sarıdır\". It can be the answer to \"what color is the flower?\" (Can you ask \"what color is A flower?\")if you take -dir suffix as \"to be\" you emphasize \"yellow\". We all know this is a flower but you stress its color.
In \" bu bir sarı çiçektir \" sentence you answer to \" what is this ?\" question but as secondly important you say \"yellow\". Answer to a question like \"what color of a flower is this?\" will be \"bu sarı bir çiçektir\". Moreover you may verbalize the pronoun \"bu\" too. Take a guess what \"sarı çiçek budur\" means.

in the poetic sense, you can say what color is a flower? remember, shakespeare, \"a rose by any other name....\" or if \"a\" means \"any\" you could use it to mean \"what color is any flower?\" in bulgarian or russian i think you\'d find that odin/edin is used for \"any\" :)

but thank you very much for the explanation, it helps me to understand greatly....in your example, bu bir sarı çiçektir, the bir is placed before the adjective and noun, though i see its after the demonstrative pronoun.
sarı çiçek budur--my guess is that it means \"this here is the yellow flower,\" answering the question \"neyi budur?\"
--can you also say \"bu neydir?\" which really emphasizes \"what the heck kind of thing is this?\" or maybe it is \"hangi sarı çiçektir?\" hmmmm, not sure after i think about it.
