| English suffix \'-ible/-able\' - have any turkish speakers ever noticed how in turkish you\'d add the suffix -ebil/-abil- to the root of a verb - for example \'gidebilmirim\' or \'okuyabilirim\' - is similar to the way we add \'able/ible\' to the end of some english words like \'responsible\' \'readable\' or \'accountable\'? They both refer to having the ability to do something. I\'m sure I\'m not the first to notice. My turkish friend thinks its just a coincident, i think not :D | |

| - no you\'re not the first to notice. you\'re the second! i thought of it first! haha.... there\'s other parallels in germanic and turkish, which i explained in some other post. or english, like the -ly suffix, or -le happy, happily or the word mutlu--but its a little different, but similar enough so that it makes me wonder. also, i read somewhere that the suffix -er in germanic languages \"macher, wiener, lehrer\" is probably a loan from the turkic masculine word er. it can\'t be denied that turkic tribes interacted with european civilization since the roman times. how much was actually exchanged in terms of culture and language? i don\'t know. www.turkicworld.org is a site i already linked, it shows the linguistic borrowings in latin and other languages from turkic. algae, acacia, kayak, yogurt :) good luck researching..... me | |
