| Turkish Game 11: Active/Passive Voice - I found some information about active-passive voice in turkish... All turkish verbs are in this form below; rootmek/mak you omit the infinitive suffix which is mek/mak and you add l or n, and then the personal suffixes. Note: if the root finishes with a vowel we directly add thse letters (n/l), but if it finishes with a consonant, then we add an i ex: aramak (seek) ben aranıyorum (i am being seeked) ex:çalmak (to steal) çalındı -> it was stolen ex: Yazmak ( to write) Yazıldılar -> they were written After these rules let\'s start a new game. everyone shall give a verb and then will write a pronoun in brackets then the person below him is going to conjugate that verb in Passive according to pronoun given. My verb : Kesmek ( O /past tense) | |

| Osman | Thursday 22nd of June 2006 10:33:09 AM |
| - very good Peter! kusulmak - to be vomitted [double t, no?] sonraki fiil (next verb); hatırlamak - remember | |
| stormgoblin | Thursday 22nd of June 2006 01:06:42 PM |
| - thanks, osman! by the way, its better to say \"to be vomited upon\" --actually, after thinking about it, i think it\'s a single t, but i\'m not sure. :) ok i just checked on spell check, its single t. i think in general it helps to understand that doubling of the consonant occurs in order to avoid an open vowel sound, like \"file\" becomes \"filed\" if it were doubled, the \"i\" would sound like turkish ı. and of course that word is \"filled\" from \"fill.\" you might think it would make sense so vomited didn\'t sound like \"vo-might-ed\" but apparently its unnecessary to double the consonant here. ok sonraki fiil, hatırlanmak? to be remembered. i\'m guessing here of course, that its irregular. by the way thanks for clarifying, i\'m guessing with usages like sonraki, glad it makes sense. salaam me | |

(for passive simple past) özlendim (I was missed) özlendin (you were missed) özlendi (she/he/it was missed) özlendik (we were missed) özlendiniz (you were missed) özlendiler (they were missed) Is that correct ?????? :) Wooooww I was missed by so many people that i already feel great !! don\'t you? next verb: bırakmak (leave) | |
| Osman | Saturday 24th of June 2006 03:07:33 AM |
| - first of all, i am sorry but that is not correct :)
Verbs whose stem ends in -L When the verb stem ends in -L then the passive mood is formed by the addition -in (subject to vowel harmony) Active Mood Passive Mood delmek to pierce delinmek to be pierced bilmek to know bilinmek to be known almak to take alınmak to be taken bulmak to find bulunmak to be found -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Verbs whose stem ends in a vowel When the verb stem ends in a vowel then the passive sign is simply -n Active Mood Passive Mood beklemek to wait/expect beklenmek to be waited for/expected kapamak to close kapanmak to be closed yemek to eat yenmek to be eaten
soon (in June) i will send some more grammar lessons. | stormgoblin | Sunday 25th of June 2006 11:33:00 AM |
| - oynanmak? bu akşamda enteresan bir ezgi çalgıyla oynandı . ok if i\'m wrong this time its probably that\' i\'m trying to use with the musician to mean \"by the musician\" sonraki-- tutmak to hold back --usul tutmak: to play a rhythm. (keep time?) | |
| zappie | Sunday 25th of June 2006 07:09:32 PM |
| - Sorry Peter there is not such a phrasal verb. It is çalmak/çalınmak. I prefer saying \" ilginç \" rather than enteresan. The -de case is not used for the days and the periods of the day. (Bu akşam enteresan bir ezgi çalındı )In fact in spoken language \"they\" conjugation of the active voice is preferred to the passive voice. Especially if the action is conducted by a group of people in real. You have found an enteresan verb: tutmak. Both tutulmak and tutunmak forms are correct. In your case it is tutulmak. But both forms have very diverse meaning. Tutulmak 1. have a crush on smb.. be held. be taken. be at a premium. be in a request. make a hit. attack. attaint. catch on. come in. come up. drop. be enamored of. be enamoured of. go into. incur. indulge. smite. be smitten with. stiffen. be stuck. be stuck on. 2. click. to be caught. to be eclipsed. to have a cramp. to fall in love with. to be affected. to be held. to be eclipsed. to fall for. to fall/be in love with. to catch on. to click . to become stiff. to be stiff. to go down with sth. Tutunmak: 1. get a toe-hold. hold on to. cling. get a grip. hang on. catch. fasten on. 2. to hold . cling. to take hold. to get along well . to take hold . to hold out/on. to hang on. to endure. to catch on. to take on. to last. Here is your new verb: giymek ( i am not providing its meaning on purpose ;) ) | |

| - I\'m lucky mistakes are for free !! otherwise turkish language would cost me a fortune :D :D Don\'t forget Vowel harmony Daisy !!!! öpülmek ???? sonraki : bildirmek (inform) | |
| stormgoblin | Tuesday 27th of June 2006 06:14:03 AM |
| - the rule is that consonants become hard when combined i think, but at the end of a word they become hard, also. and so, the t in etmek softens because its being followed by a vowel? i think that is correct as a rule, but not sure. e.g. kitaba--to the book, kitap--the book, kitaplar--the books (hard vowel because its joined with l). bildirilmek? ok i just checked it on the dictionary :) sonraki--sulamak: to water, or irrigate a living creature. the slang translation is interesting for the passive :S peace, me | |
| daisyc | Wednesday 28th of June 2006 07:35:09 PM |
