A translation game - game nr 2 - Hi everyone,

I like to do word games to help me study a language. This is a translation game I have seen on the French forum. I would also like to introduce the game here.

Translation Game
Person A takes an English word or (short) sentence in his/her mind. The next person has to translate this into (Roman-) Urdu and give a new word or short sentence. (See for example the site UrduWord).

And it would be great if some people could correct our mistakes. :).

An example:

Person A writes: How are you?
Person B writes: Aap kaysay hayn? and gives a new sentence.I eat a mango.
And then the next person translates this sentence, and gives a new one. Etcetera.

Who would like to translate the first sentence?
I eat a mango.

Aap pata naheen, mayn aap kaysay kafi saara muhabbat karti ho.

[b]Corrections[/b]
1) It should be \"Aap [b]ko[/b] pata naheen\". Ko is the particle that is the \"Object marker\". It marks the object of the sentence. For example:- Aam ko khana (Eating a mango), since the mango is being eaten, ko will come after it.

2) \"Mayn aap kaysay\" Should be \"Aap se\" (pronounced Aap say), I don\'t why you used \"kaysay\", there is no such word in Urdu :).

3) \"Kafi saara\" means \"Alot of\", which, although correct gramatically, is not the proper translation of \"you dont know how much...\". Here you should just use the word \"Kitni\" meaning \"how much\". :)

4)\"Karti ho\" should be \"Karti hu\". Since you are the one \"karti\" applies to, you must use the personal form of hai (hu) and not the second person form (ho).

[b]Corrected phrase[/b]
[i]Aap ko pata naheen, mayn aap se kitni muhabbat karti hu.[/i]

Excellent try nonetheless, you exceeded my expectations. Well done.



Translation of the phrase:-
Where is the nearest public phone?
[i]Subse kareeb [b]public phone[/b] kidhar hai?[/i]

This is the correct translation to the phrase, but sounds like a very unnatural way of asking for the way to a public phone. A better way of asking would be:-

[i]Yahan aas paas koi [b]public phone / PCO[/b] hai?[/i]
Is there a Public Phone / PCO around here?

I mentioned PCO since where I live, we dont have alot of Public Phones, but rather small Phone Call Offices (PCO) all over the place where calls can be made.


Next sentence:
[b]Where are you going?[/b]

Like I said, Ko is the object marker. It marks the object of the sentence.

For examlpe:
\"Tum Jaante naheen\"
(You dont know.)

(You dont know Mr Bean.)

\"Maro.\"
(Hit / Kill)
\"[b]Sub ko[/b] maro.\"
(Kill everyone)

Se plays the part of \"from\", \"to\" and \"of\". [b]Se also marks the thing to which certain verbs apply.[/b] I know its hard to understand, and its certianly quite difficult to explain, so Ill give examples.

\"Aap kahan se hein?\"
\"Where are you from?\"

\"Aap [b]ko[/b] dar lagta hai.\"
You are afraid.

\"(Mujhe) Aap [b]se[/b] dar lagta hai.\"
Im afraid of you.


\"Chamach [b]se[/b] khana.\"
Eating with a spoon.

\"Chamach [b]ko[/b] khana.\"
Eating the spoon.


\"Larki se kehna...\"
Saying to the girl...

\"Larki ko kehna...\"
Saying to the girl...

So in certain cases, they both mean the same thing, while in other cases they change the meanings drastically. I wish I could explain better. :(

[b]Corrections:[/b]

1) \"Aap ko fikar naheen\" means \"You dont worry\" as in \"You are unconcerned\". It should be, \"Aap fikar na kurein\" which means \"You dont worry\" in a way in which Im asking the person not to worry as opposed to \"Aap ko fikar naheen\" which [b]states[/b] that \"You dont worry\".

2)\"Choonkay\" is wrong. The word is Kyunke (pronounced Kyoon Kay). I think you meant to use this word, so I suggest you spell it with a K as to avoid misspronouncing it with the CH sound as in (Chair).

3)\"mayn se ibadat karti hu\", First of all, \"Se\" is wrong here. \"mayn ibadat karti hu\" is gramatically correct. As a reminder, you can remember that \"Se\" [b]links to nouns[/b] and since \"mein ibadat karti hu\" involves only one noun (mayn), se and ko cant be used.

4)\"mayn ibadat karti hu\" means \"I worship\" rather than \"I pray\". I think the word you should use here is \"Dua\" which is \"A request made to God\" which is very much like the prayer that people make for everything to be alright. Dua itself is a noun, and the verb is \"Dua maangna\", \"maangna\" means \"to ask for something\". So it becomes, \"Mayn dua maangti hu\"

5)\"mayn harcheez pati hu karego teek.\" Here Id like to point out an important fact that in urdu there are different types of verbs. Itll take too long to explain here so Ill open a different thread on them later. For now, take it that the correction here is \"mayn jaanti hu ke sub theek ho jaye ga.\"

A NEWCOMER - mein aglay haftay ko/haftay kay din apni salgirah manaoon\' ga/gi ... (ga for males/gi for females).
I used \"haftay ko\" or \"haftay kay din\" because \"hafta\" also means week in urdu...

1- mujhay is Subjective form of \"I\" in urdu... Here,the subject is \"aap\"(you)....furthermore, When we say in urdu..\"help\".. we use possesive form of the one who needs help like \"Meri madad\"..\"Tumhari madad\".. \"Hamari madad\"...

2- Im urdu, youshould always use verb without any prefix or suffix like in english... \"DO\",\"EAT\",\"CATCH\" = kar,kha,pakar....

3- sakta/sakti/saktein is always used as the main verb & you do not need to use any additional verb to end the sentence... simply take the word \"kar sakti/saktein\" before \"hein\".

4- possesiv form is usedjust like in english \"I --> My\".. \"Mein --> Mera\"...My handbag --> Mera handbag..
5- Because the subject here is \"YOU/aap\".. so the ending will be changed to \"ho\"(for friends & the people who have close relationship to you)..hein (polite form)...

5- The word order is not correct....
So the correct sentence is::
Kya aap mera handbag talaash karne mein meri madad kar sakti/saktein hein?.. POLITE FROM

OR

Kya tum mera handbag talaash karnay mein meri madad kar sakti/saktay ho?.. For Close Friends
But usually, if we want someone help for finding the handbag.. we\'ll ask like this....
Kya app mera handbag talaash karne mein meri mada karein gey/gi? .. POLITE FROM

OR

Kya tum mera handbag talaash karne mein meri mada karo gey/gi? .. For Close Friends
It is more formal to say like this & it can be translated in English like this :
Will you help me to find my handbag? ( I know it should be SHALL but .....)

I could not come online for a while, but now I am back. Neither did I have time to practise Urdu. But I will try anyways. I am confused about the word order in this sentence.

The sentence: I can\'t wait to go visit Pakistan next month!
My translation: Main Pakistan janti ja aglaa maheena intezar naheen karti sakta!

Firstly, I have a few questions. My dictionary translates \"kafi\" as \"enough, sufficient\". Can it be used for \"very\" too?
I don\'t know the tense haijaime. Could you tell me what tense it is?
I think it might be better to say:
Aaj bohut dhoop hai.
Please correct me if I\'m wrong.

The translation of your sentence:

I wonder if khubsurat changes according to gender also. I guess it does, so I have changed it in the sentence.

Also, it is my understanding that when two nouns follow each other in the Urdu sentence, then you should use an extra word, the postposition, to make clear which noun is the object and which is the subject. In english these type of words come before the noun, (prepositions), but in Urdu they come after the noun (hence postpositions)

So, according to that, I would translate it as:
Vo axbaar main parhta hai. - He reads (in) the newspaper.
Vo gosht ke kha rahe hain. - They are eating (their) meat.

Please note, that I find the postpositions very difficult, so I most likely made mistakes. Please let me know what my mistakes are. :)

yeh \"main ghalat hoon\"(male/female) is easy to say.
but \"main ghalti main hoon\"(male/female) also use
the 2nd \"main=in\"

Yeh \"woh akhbaar parhta hai\" is right
but we used the phrase \"woh akhbaar main parhta hai=He reads (in) the newspaper\" to point a topic or specail thing in newspaper.
like you says \" i read this news in newspaper\"
so thats why we used \"in=main\" here in the phrase::

there no is perfect word for \"radio\" in urdu because this is not invented by pakistanis:D

1)The word wo or woh is right for She. but in this sentence the word Usse will be for She, because of should.and there will be never she=woh Or he=woh in should.

2)and her is for us ki, but here her will show apni, because the word she already show Usse.
The Word she=Us^se, where there is should.

In should:
she:Us^se:she should=Us^se chaahi\'ey
He=Us^se:He should=Us^se chaahi\'ey
I=mujhe:I should=Mujhe chaahi\'ey
they=Unhain:they should=Unhain chaahi\'ey
You=tumhain/tujhe/Aapko:you should=Aapko/tujhe/tumhain chaahi\'ey
we=hamain:we should=hamain Chaahi\'ey

The above difference will be effect in should

use of should=chaahi\'ey

-He should go to school
-Usse school/madrassa jana chaahi\'\'ey

-He should eat his bread
-Usse apna roti khana chaahi\'ey
-she should go to her(2nd person)
-Usse(1st person) Uskey(2nd person) pass jana chaahi\'ey

yeah this is *ALMOST* correct! its just that \"deya\" should be \"deye\" because the OBJECT (flowers) of the sentence is PLURAL. Your sentence means \"he gave her a beautiful flower\". Close enough. :D

I hope you guys know that its okay to change isne and usse around anyway you like.

isne usse phool diya (this person gave that person)
usne isse phool diya (that person gave this person)
isne isse phool diya (this person gave this person)
usne usse phool diya (that person gave that person)

all mean the same thing.

Now structure.

Is ans Uss, like you (should) know, are pronouns, basically meaning \"this\" and \"that\". They can be used for people or for objects. Uss + ko = Usse. The -na of verbs is dropped and Ya is added to make past tence for most verbs. The exceptions include Dena (to give) which becomes Diya instead of Deya. This is exactly like the past tense I discussed in the second part of my article here http://www.phrasebase.com/forum/read.php?TID=19301.

basically it goes like this;


SUBJECT ne OBJECT ko OBJECT2 VERB+ya.
Is ne Uss ko Phool Dena+ya.
Isne Usse Phool Diya.

Mein ne Aap Ko Yeh Samjhaya (tha). :D (Samjhana = Explain)

Bravo! You beat me to the corrections :D. Yes, it should be \"khate\" instead of \"khane\", and \"Kya aap aaloon khate the?\" is 100% correct. Actually, by using \"khane\" instead of \"khate\" you can make another type of sentence.

Do/es (SUBJECT) want to (VERB) (OBJECT)?

(Interrogative Particle)(Subject)ne(Object)(Verb+ne) Hain?
(Kya) (Aap) (ne) (Aloo) (Khane) (Hain)?

Kya Aap ne Aloo khane hain?
Do you want to eat potatoes?

as opposed to

Kya Aap Aloo Khate hain?
Do you eat potatoes?

karna(do) = kiya(did) (not kara)
jana(go) = gaya(went) (not jaya)
hona(happen) = hua(happened) (not hoya)
kehna(say) = kaha(said) (not keha)
sehna(bear) = saha(bore) (not seha)
rehna(stay) = raha(stayed) (not reha)

Haan, as you should know, = \"yes\". It\'s neither respectful nor disrespectful, if you\'re not sure, use the respectful form haanji or just ji or even jihaan. All mean \"yes\".

About the \"ne\" particle, its the subject marker (marks the subject of a sentence) as opposed to \"ko\" which is the object marker (marks the object of a sentence). When conjugating a sentence for the past tense, it is necessary to use \"ne\" to show the subject. Therefore, the sentence becomes,

Haan, mein ne kiya.
Yes, I did.

Kya kiya?
What did (you do)?

Mein ne kaam kiya. Aap ne kya kiya? Kya Aap ne kuch kiya?
I did work. What did you do? Did you do something?

Naheen, mein ne kuch naheen kiya.
No, I didnt do anything.

Kuch bhi naheen?
Nothing at all?

Kuch naheen.
Nothing.

I hope this conversation helps. Oh and note how Kuch can mean \"something\", \"anything\" or even \"nothing\" :))

Ok Ill correct your mistakes,

kia tum chati ho aam cutna?

This is correct, but I would suggest you try to keep the \'ho\' at the end of the sentence, so re-arrange it like this;

[i]Kya tum aam katna chahti ho?[/i] sounds more natural.

Kya aap ne cinema jane hain?

This is almost correct. The \'jane hain\' should be \'jana hai\'. [i]Kya aap ne cinema jana hai?[/i] is correct.

woh door jaana thi?

Hmmm. Door does mean \'away\' literally. But if you wanted to say \"did she go away?\" you wouldnt use the urdu word for away (door) to say it. Id say [i]Kya wo chali gayi?[/i]

[i]Chale Jana[/i] means to \"go away\". As you should know :D, past tense of jana is gaya (g as in gate) instead of jaya. So if the subject is masculin then you use [i]Chala gaya[/i], and if the subject is feminine you use [i]Chali Gayi[/i] as I used in this example.

hi - well \"ko\" will not be use here.

it will be \"Aap kab ghar aao ge? OR kab Aap ghar aao ge\"

ko will not be use here and aaey ge is for the 2nd person.

uses of ko

he knows=usko pata hai

usauly ko=to(but in some places it will not be used for \"to\"

use of to=ko
say him to come to me=us ko kaho k mere pass ayee.
send him to me=us ko mere pass bhejo.

in some phrases you can use ko and can compet phrase wihtout ko..

like.....
you go toschool= Aap school jate ho OR Aap school ko jate ho.

in indian films.. they changes the urdu ... as they says

hamre ko pata nahi hai k woh kahan hai=i dont know where he is.

but leave it. it will disturb you. when you will learn urdu then watch indian film. so you will be able to know how is it

before u worte a correction:

\"Aap kab ghar aao ge? OR kab Aap ghar aao ge\"

and the KAB word is after the subject or before the subject ( in the begin of the sentence).

when i have to write the kab, kahaan, kayse, and the others words for questions in a sentence?.

let me try to clear your confusion - ASSALAMU ALAIKUM!

here Aap kab ghar aaoge? OR \"kab Aap ghar aao ge\".

well you can use KAB before and after subject.
but it will be better if you use after subject.
because you will not be two minded and it will be clear to you to understand it.
let me give you example:
Aap kab aao gey.when will you come?
Aap Kahan jaao gey.where will you go?
Aap kaise/kayse ho.how are you?

KAB and KAHAN can be used after and before subject but kayse will not be used. because it is not suitable to pronunciate.it will be better if you use after subject.

i wish your lil confusion will be lil clear if not all.
