Hi, my name is Rainbow. What\'s your name? How are you?

Yeh forum bagair café tha. Lekin ab haan hai. :) Aap Urdu practise chahte hain, jab ke ham kap sath chai pite hain?

This forum didn\'t have a café. But now it does have one. :) Would you like to practise with me, while we enjoy a cup of tea?

Ye forum men main naam Rainbow istemaal karti hun. Voh main ko dutch expression \"baarish ke baad, sunshine aanti hai\" reminds hai. Kaun matlab hai, buraa kabhee-kabhee waqay ke baad hai hai, achcha kabhee-kabhee waqay hai hai.
Expression ek jaisi Urdu men hai?
I use the name Rainbow in this forum. (I rather keep my real name private.) It makes me think of a dutch expression, \"after rain, sunshine comes\", which means that after something bad has happened, something good will follow. Do you have a similar expression in Urdu?

Main ko chaie piti hu. Aap ko coffee men doodh aur shakar chaiey?
Yes, I prefer drinking tea. Would you like milk or sugar in your coffee?

- Yeh cafee hamensha holti hai. Main naheen kal kar sakyi anti hun, lekin aap (plural) kap cofee yaa kap chai yahaan hamensha kar sakte pinte hai, main naheen yahaan hun. Her ek hamensha xushe aamded hain!
This cafe is always open. yesterday, I couldn\'t come, but you can take a cup of cofee or tea, even when I am not here. Everyone is always welcome here!

Aap yahan aap ki chaaye saath dutch apple pie hain. Here you have your tea with a dutch apple pie.
Dutch applepie bhi bahut maze-daar hai. The dutch apple pie is also very good.

Ajj main garam chocolate milk ke saath whipped cream aur Pakistani pie leounh-gi. I will take a hot chocolate milk with whipped cream and a Pakistani pie, today.

Main nain.. Pakistani pie kabhi naheen khahi. I never ate the Pakistani pie.
Kia Pakistani pie mithi hai? Is a Pakistani pie sweet?

Ajj barish ho rahi hai. Today it is raning.

Lekin aksar Netherlands mainh barish ho rahi hai. But it is raining often in the Netherlands.
Mera kaam noo waqt par shuruh karta hai. My job starts at nine.
Aur aap ka kaam? Aap kiss waqt kaam pe jahogi? And your job? At what time will you go to work?

Vo Yahaan xamush hai. It is quiet here. Log naheen piyase hain? Aren/t people thirsty.

Main aksar cafee ko pasand karti aanungi. I would like to come to this cafe frequently.
Lekin main xali waqt main aanti dabbaa hun. But I can only come in my free time.
Aur fiqronh ka tarjuna kar rahi ziyada waqt hain. And translating a sentence takes much time.
Main ummeed karti hun, log yahaan aanenga aur harmein join. I do hope that others will come and join us here.

- Could you explain to me why you are using the following forms (the bolded parts) in this sentence? Why is the first in plural and the second in single?

I am trying to answer your question but it\'s a little technical thing and I am not sure whether I could make it clear to you or not...Anyhow let me know if I am successful or not...:) Theek hai? Is it right

First of all I would like to put some rules regading the use of ka,ke and ki.

1:Ka is used befor a Masculine Singular Noun, where the latter is not followed by a post-position ( psot positions are the Urdu equivalents of English pre-position) e.g
!:Brother\'s son=bahi ka beta
!:The door of the house=makan ka darwaza.

2: Ke is used before the Masculine Singular noun, where the later is followed by a post-position e.g.

!: To the brother\'s son=bahi ke bete ko
!: In the door of the house=makan ke darwaze meinh (nh=nasal N)

3: ke is also used before all Masculine plural nouns, regardless of use of post-postion.
!: The brother\'s sons=bahi ke betey(beta=son,bety=sons)
!: The doors of the house= Makan ke darwaze ( darwaza=singular, darwaze=plural)

4: Ki is used before all feminin nouns including plurals and also regardless of the use of post-positions e.g.
!: Brother\'s daughter=bahi ki beti
!: brother\'s daughters=bahi ki betian
!: The hous\'s window=makan ki khirhki ( khirhki=female)
!: The hous\'s windows=Makan ki khirhkian (plural)

In Urdu, in the case of objective verbal nouns are changed by putting e at the end e.g.
khana to khane
bolna to bolne
rona to rone
likhna to likhne and soooo on

Examples:

!:It does not cost anything to be polite= Meetha bolnE meinh koi kharch naheenh atta.
!: The vegetables lost vitamins in over boiling= Ziada obalnE se sabzionh se vitmains zaia ho jate hainh.

I am sure now you would be able to find the answer of your question..Try to find the answer of your question...and also this is the home work for today...:)

doorsi -> i, because language (zubanein) is female plural noun.
ka -> a, because you are single male that loves learning.
seekhne -> here is were I get confused, as I see learning as a verb and you are the only one learning, so I would choose a, but does it change to e because of this:

Good try though but I would like to do some corrections...with dur appology :)

Ka-> because shoq is a singular masculine noun
Seekjne-> Yes, offcourse it is verb..by putting e at the end it is not made plural but see above

In Urdu, in the case of objective verbal nouns are changed by putting e at the end e.g.
khana to khane
bolna to bolne
rona to rone
likhna to likhne and soooo on

SEEKHNA TO SEEKHNE

It is something different with Urdu language...I know and your confusion is natural....I guess the founders of this language did it for the sake of euphony as well.

Please practice again and dont hesitate to ask over and over...Believe me I am patient :)

But remember, I want neat and clean home work :)

I am sorry, but this sentence confuses me a little.
I would expect:
In the case of this, that changes.
So In the case of objective verbal nouns, ....changes.
What changes, the verb, the noun, or the postposition?

Now looking back at this sentence:

doosri --> i, because languages is still plural feminine.
sikh rahi --> i, because I am learning and I(Muhje-I) am single feminine (and learning is followed by a post-position)

In this sentence ka is a post-position, because it is before shoq? Or because the noun shoq is after ka? Or because the noun shoq is after learning?

- Hi Mairangel,

I appreciate your thrill for learning Urdu langugae..To post the whole Past and future tense here at PB is very difficult for me as its too long and at the moment I am not able to spare that much time, I am afriad. The other thing is you will not be able to understand the tenses, if started directly without introduction to other grammatical things/terms. This is also important to note that lot of grammatical structures of Urdu language differ from that of English. So assuming that you are very well in English can\'t guarantee you that you would learn Urdu very well.You\'ll obiviously need a thorough comparason, the similarities and differences. I never mean that Urdu is that much difficult.It is very interesting and easy if learnt systematically.

What I can suggest you for now is to buy a good book available in your arrea, study it and ask me for your difficulties...:)

- Some corrections please:

Seekhne: This is not altered because of the gender or number, yea. Yes, you are right that it is because of being followed by ka. please consider the example \"Mujhe doosri zubanein seekhna boht passand hai\". here we did not use ka, so we did not change the verb seekhna into seekhne.

I guess you are also confused with ka,ke,ki as well...Please note, These are the equivalents of the English postrophe s (\'s) like John\'s pen. Now dont confused with the original translation of your sentence..I have given you the idimatic translation. It is common with most languges that sometimes direct translation from source language does not give the same sense in the target language. So in the case you chose the alternate idiomatic translation.

I think the micro surgery of this sentence has almost done..u r a good surgeon :)..I appreciate it

- Well, what I do is I just write a few sentences in English or Dutch on a note, then on that note I try to translate the sentences word by word to Urdu, and then I type those here. It takes me a long time, but at least this way I try to practise. I don\'t know these words by memory, unfortunately. I look them up in a dictionary.

- Well actually I use two online dictionaries and a paper-based dictionary.
- http://www.urduword.com/ (sort of gives the prunouncation)
- http://www.ebazm.com/dictionary.htm (gives words in context, but only for words used in poetry)
- Urdu dictionary and phrasebook, --> very helpfull to start with, for greetings and the like, it even contains a section with very basic grammar.

The only thing I don\'t have is a good dictionary with gender of the words included, so if you happen to know one, then please let me know.

Janab, Begam Sahiba, main aap sawaal puch sakti hunh? - Sir, madam, may I ask you a question?
Aap kaise hain? - How are you?
Bazaar kahan hai? - Where is the market?
Sab se qarib taink station kahan hai? - Where is the nearest tank station?

Main kahan taink sakti hunh? - Where could I tank/fill my car?

Kya main yahaan taxi bula sakti hunh? - Could I call for a taxi somewhere here?

I almost wrote all my sentences in Dutch instead of English this time. :)

Kya meri galtiyan hain? -What are my mistakes?
