| Urdu vs Hindi - Hi, What is the difference between these two languages, i have two friends and they each speak one, but not the other and yet they can understand each other in most things... Some words, they say are slightly different, and they also say it is just an accent that changes Urdu to Hindi and vice-versa. Another friend speaks Punjabi and says although she couldn't read and write Urdu or Hindi, she would be able to understand them if they were spoken. This is very confusing, are they the same or not? Many Thanks, Ed. | |

| almost same - urdu and hindi are almost identical languages. the main difference between the two is the way they both are written.. urdu is written in perso-arabic script and hindi is written in the devangari script of sanskrit. the grammar between the two is virtually the same..while the vocab can occasionally be different..this is because..urdu uses many more persian and arabic words. and hindi's dialect is pushed towards sanskrit..so yeah..if someone says they speak urdu..den a person speaking hindi will be able to get the gist of the conversation. as for punjabis...there language is in a form derived frm hindi and urdu..so they pretty much understand both languages..(as far as i knw..althouhg i cant guarentee 100% accuracy of wat i told u..im 98.56% sure its true) | |
