help? - I\'m confused on when to use certain words. My dictionary is no help.

tôi, tao, tớ

How do I know which one to use for the english word, \"me\"?

toi...tao...to - I just noticed your question. You may have the answer by now. I would generally use toi when I first meet someone then use em, bac, anh etc

toi, for formal situation. I would say the most common form of me/I
tao informal, i.e.: close friends
tớ, informal too, used in the north usually

- i would not use the word \" to*\' \" for female it sound so......:D.. eewwwwww
another way in Vnese language is you replace that word for your name . it\'s quite very cute when you talk to your friend you know well ( informal conversation..) such as :
to^i kho?e ca\'m o*n = i am good thankyou = sally kho?e ca\'m o*n
