I got a spam message, what should I do?

August 12th, 2008

ANSWER: If you receive spam in your PM (Personal Message) account, then instead of deleting it, simply hit the SPAM button. Doing so will not only delete the message, but it will flag it as spam, allowing us to quickly and easily delete the spammers account, and delete all other PM’s the spammer sent.

If you get spam at your personal email address, then unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do about that. The spammer already has your email address and will continue to spam you until he gets bored or you change to a new email address. Usually the latter happens first.

Therefore, its absolutely CRITICAL that you take every precaution possible to prevent people, and potential spammers, from obtaining your email address. Here is how…

1) Use PM instead of your email until you feel 100% comfortable with the person you are communicating with. There is absolutely NO WAY the public can obtain your email address when you are engaged in PM conversations.

2) Make sure you have your account settings set to HIDE EMAIL ADDRESS. Go to your Member Account Settings and make sure you say “YES” to HIDE EMAIL ADDRESS. By default, all new Phrasebase accounts will have this option selected as YES, to keep their email address hidden from the public.

With this option set to YES, the public WILL be able to email you, but they will NOT obtain your email address unless you reply to them with your personal email address.

If you have this option set to NO, then in your profile, it will display your email address, so a potential spammer can simply copy it and spam you.

3) Regardless of whether the “HIDE EMAIL ADDRESS” option is set to YES or NO, other members in the community can contact you via your personal email address. If you do not know the person who contacts you, then do NOT reply to them.

If it is a spammer, and you reply to them, then they capture your email address and will continually spam you. If you don’t reply to them, then the spam they sent you was a 1 time only spam. We will soon discover who they are, and delete their account, preventing them from spamming anymore.

If you get an email from a Phrasebase member that you do not know, it’s best and safest to simply return to the Phrasebase website and look up the persons profile, then contact them either by PM or email within the Phrasebase site. This way, the person will not obtain your email address.

So, the best way to prevent spam is to prevent the public from obtaining your email address. By default, we at Phrasebase DO protect your email address, but you have to do your part and make sure you don’t reply to people you don’t know using your personal email address. Always use Phrasebase PB or Phrasebase Email-Send to communicate with people you don’t know.

And lastly, if you do get spammed, please forward us a copy at the CONTACT US/ABOUT US section of Phrasebase.

What is the difference between “Outbox” and “Sent Items”?

August 12th, 2008

ANSWER: The Outbox is the place your Private Message goes to after being sent. Your PM remains there until the member you wrote to reads it.

In other words, once your message is opened by its recipient, it disappears from your Outbox and gets sent to your Sent Items.

Difference between a Teacher and Tutor?

June 5th, 2008

Phrasebase categorizes each of our language enthusiast members interest as either being that of either a Student, Teacher or Language Exchange Partner… or some combination thereof.

It is important to note that we often use the terms “Teacher” and “Tutor” interchangeably. Because they are so much alike.

However, in some cases, we get more detailed and discern the difference between Teaching and Tutoring. The difference as we define it to be, is basically this…

Tutors teach students 1 on 1.
Teachers teach 1 on many.. (Teachers teach class sessions consisting of several students.)

If you are student, you need to consider which environment is most suitable for you to learn a language. If you have an independent, self studying, largely introverted personality, then perhaps you would be better off learning in a Tutor<>Student environment.

However, if you are very social, extroverted and learn better in groups, then you may be more suitable in a Teacher<>Students environment.

Another difference is that in general, Individual Tutoring sessions cost more than Teacher led classroom sessions.

What is a Language Exchange Partner?

June 5th, 2008

A language exchange partner is a friend or pen-pal, a person who has an interest in learning a foreign language just like you do. Specifically, they have an interest in learning the language that you are fluent in and able to teach. And likewise, you have an interest in learning the language they are fluent in and able to teach you.

When such a mutually beneficial relationship exists, it makes sense to befriend this person and share language and culture with one another, to help each other learn their respective target language.

Phrasebase.com assists in matching you together with people who speak the language you want to learn, enabling you to establish language exchange partnerships.
