Bengali Phrases
Hi All,

How are you? (apni keamon arsen?) I am well (ami valo arshe).

Would you please post any phrases that you might know in Bengali - it does not matter what phrase it is - just post it and lets see if we can learn form each other.

Markus

Just adding my two cents
Hello all,
I'm so glad to find a group that is as eager to learn bengali as am I. Just a little side note I am fluent in spanish and know a little french just incase anyone is interested. This is what I know in Bengali:

Ami am khai
ami=I
am=mango
khai=eat

ami chhatro
chhatro=student(male)
chhatri(female)

ami ki chhatro=am I a student?
Rule of thumb about ki(what) is add ki after the subject in SOV(subject-object-verb) sequence in order to convert statement into interrogative

bari=house
boi=book
bhalobashi=love
janala=window
bondhu=friend
what time is it=koeta baje?

An important word to always know when first learning a language and you are speaking with a native is:
aste=slowly

taratari=quickly
chhele=boy
meye=girl
na=no
haan=yes
ki holo=what happened?

Another thing that is important to know is:
subjective form:
p=polite
f=familiar
h=here
t=there
e=elsewhere
1st I=Ami
we=Amra
2nd you(p)=apni
you=apnara
you(f)=tumi
you=tomara
3rd(h) he/she(p)=Ini
they=enara
he/she(f)=e
they=era
3rd(t) he/she(p)=uni
they=unara
he/she(f)=o
they=ora
3rd(e) he/she(p)=tuni
they=tenara
he/she(f)=shay
they=tara
posessive forms:
1st my=amar
our=amader
2nd your(p)=apnar
your=apnader
your(f)=tomar
your=tomader
3rd(h) he/she(p)=enar
their=enader
he/she(f)=er
their=eder
3rd(t) he/she(p)=unar
their=unarder
he/she(f)=or
their=oder
3rd(e) he/she(p)=tanre
their=tander
he/she(f)=tar
their=tader
Objective form:
1st me=amake
us=amaderke
2nd you(p)=apnake
you=apnaderke
you(f)=tomake
you=tomadarke
3rd(h) him/her(p)=inake
them=enaderke
him/her(f)=eke
them=ederke
3rd(t) him/her(p)=unake
them=unarderke
him/her(f)=oke
them=oderke
3rd(e) him/her(p)=tenake
them=tenaderke
him/her(f)=take
them=taderke

Demonstartive pronouns:
eta this(h)
ota that(t)
sheta that(e)
egulo these(h)
ogulo those(t)
shegulo those(e)

bojha?(understand)
I know its a lot to digest, but over time hopefully it will come easy to all of us. Happy learnings!!

Please also note:

chele = son
meye = daughter

Though meye is written "maw" with "e" vowel sign, + "yaw" with "e" vowel sign, it is pronounced "me" (may)

Hi ppl,
I really have no idea as to how to make this learning effective, But i feel unless we actually practice it, we'll go nowhere. So how about all of us trying to converse in whatever liitle we know?
Whenever we make a mistake or we need any help, ppl who know Bengali can correct us...

How about staring with some greetings and some phrases like:
I'm learning Bengali.
I'll be learning.
I want to talk to you.
How is your Learning going on?
What's your name?
Where are you from?

Hello, my Bengali friend just wanted to make a few corrections. First off, "apni keamon arsen" sounds really formal. She usually says "kamon acho". Also, sixty is "sholo", not "shat". Also, dhanyabad is thank you.
